I've only just got a SB3 (wedding present from my Dad), but I'm
planning to build a box to do all my ripping and serving for me.

Idea is you just feed it CDs, it rips it and spits it out - needs to be
fool proof enough that my wife and kids can use it - current thoughts
are around, Linux on an ITX box, but still playing and learning right
now.

[slim] Re: Will There Be a SB4?

2006-07-26 Thread Andy D

I'm no audiophile so while I can appreciate the Transporter, it does
nothing for me and I wouldn't buy one even if I had the money.

I got a SB3 because I want a simple (ish) way to have decent sounding
music throughout the house and get rid of all the CDs that clutter up
the place.

What I'd like to seek is a SB with built in amp as the Sonos
ZonePlayers have, clock and radio would be nice too.

This is just my 2p's worth - everyone has opinions...

Cheers

Andy

[slim] Re: Administer Linux from XP Pro?

2006-07-29 Thread Andy D

For the odd occasion you do need to plug a monitor etc in it might be
worth getting a remote admin board - AMI MegaRac, Peppercon Eric etc. -
they're not cheap but occasionally come up on eBay for bargain prices.

Basically they allow you to drive the machine, edit the bios, reboot
etc. remotely - some allow a remote CD too.

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver

2006-08-09 Thread Andy D

If we're talking legacy hardware, other things to consider are the
slimline PCs e.g. Compaq ipaq, and slimline evo range.

Problem with some of them will be the lack of large hard drive support
- the ipaq will only support upto 120GB for example

2006-08-11 Thread Andy D

Currently using main desktop pc

- P4 2.26GHz Celeron
- 512MB RAM
- 160GB Samsung SATA SpinPoint Drive

To be replaced by an ITX board in a dedicated box when I can afford it
