Re: [slim] TIDAL/MQA is 2016
An overwhelming majority of Squeezebox owners who are also audiophiles recognize that the SB onboard DAC is not up to audiophile quality. Using either digital outputs (eTOSLINK or COAX), the SB signal bypasses the onboard DAC and allows for substitution of a quality DAC, possible pre-amplifier, and main amplifier. MQA-certified DACs are designed such that they completely "unfold" (3X) the MQA file* and are "tuned" to each particular DAC hardware implementation. This custom tuning is what pippin previously referred to as "certification and license fees." What Squeezebox streamer owners need to discover and want to know is which MQA-certified DAC sounds best with their particularly-configured audiophile system. * http://www.mqa.co.uk/customer/how-it-works and http://bobtalks.co.uk/blog/science-mqa/mqa-playback/ *Source*: TIDAL HiFi, Pandora One > MySqueezebox.com using iPeng 9.2.1 app on iPhone6s/iPad *Great Room*: SB Touch(1) > AudioQuest TOS > PSAudio DL3 DAC > Audio Envy 10' cables > 200w powered Martin Logan (ML) Purity speakers, SB Touch(2) >JVC 110w amp > ML Motion 4 & AudioEngine 5. *Garage:* SB Touch(3) > CullenCoax > Wyred mINT > Cullen Cables > ML Motion 12 *Carry Anywhere: *TIDAL >iPhone 6s > Bose Mini BT speaker. *Streaming Media:* https://www.facebook.com/groups/535747176592597/ DanSmedra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62637 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104878 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] TIDAL/MQA is 2016
I have confirmed that the TIDAL MQA Master quality tracks can be partially decoded (one unfold-24bit/96kHz + the benefit of correction for the time domain smearing caused by the original A/D converter) via TIDAL's desktop app (Windows or Mac). Rumor has it that hi-res playback software applications (e.g. Roon, Amarra, and Audirvana) are being modified to take similar advantage of this " uptick in sound quality." So the question seems to be, who worked on the TIDAL app for Squeezebox (Logitech, TIDAL, or combo), who is capable of doing modifications for MQA, and are they 'in the works'? *Source*: TIDAL HiFi, Pandora One, other > MySqueezebox.com & LMS 7.9.0-ickStream plugin, using iPeng 9.0.3 app on iPhone6s/iPad *Great Room*: SB Touch(1) > AudioQuest Toslink > PSAudio DL3 DAC > Audio Envy interconnect 10' cables > 200w powered Martin Logan Purity speakers, SB Touch(2) >JVC 110w amp > Martin Logan Motion 4 & AudioEngine 5. *Garage:* SB Touch(3) > Wyred mINT > Cullen Cables > Martin Logan Motion 12 *Carry Anywhere: *TIDAL and Pandora >iPhone 6s > Bose Mini Bluetooth speaker. If you've listened to or read any of Bob Stewart's (MQA creator) presentations, there are several component parts (some software based, others hardware based) to MQA. One of the best recent articles is by John Darko here: http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2017/01/mqa-tidal-where-are-we-now/#comment-140297. Based on Darko's explanation, the best SB/LMS/ickStream users can possibly hope for is for our software gurus/experts to write a patch/plugin (for SBT and/or LMS) which recognizes the MQA encoded file from TIDAL and performs the first (48kHz to 96kHz) 'decode' of the MQA's 'audio origami' technique. "In other words, a 24bit/48kHz MQA file (standard currently available) streamed via the Tidal MQA-mod desktop app (insert possible modified SB here) will reach the downstream DAC as a 24bit/96kHz file, whether that DAC is MQA-certified or not" Darko. MQA-certified DACs will decode higher resolutions files at the hardware level, up to 382.8kHz, IF that was encapsulated originally. These MQA files from TIDAL HiFi/Master are also said to benefit from correction of "the time domain smearing caused by the original A/D converter. Even if you dont have an MQA DAC and you dont have software that executes hi-res unfolding, an uptick in sound quality might still be heard, especially on a more resolving hifi system." Darko My Dilemma: I was extraordinarily fortunate to come by a used PS Audio DL3 DAC, which together with Martin Logan Purity speakers, is so good, I'm reluctant to upgrade the DAC to something lesser that is MQA-certified. *Source*: TIDAL HiFi, Pandora One, other > MySqueezebox.com & LMS 7.9.0-ickStream plugin, using iPeng 9.0.3 app on iPhone6s/iPad *Great Room*: SB Touch(1) > AudioQuest Toslink > PSAudio DL3 DAC > Audio Envy interconnect 10' cables > 200w powered Martin Logan Purity speakers, SB Touch(2) >JVC 110w amp > Martin Logan Motion 4 & AudioEngine 5. *Garage:* SB Touch(3) > Wyred mINT > Cullen Cables > Martin Logan Motion 12 *Carry Anywhere: *TIDAL and Pandora >iPhone 6s > Bose Mini Bluetooth speaker. [slim] OraStream?
"Today, people generally listen to music in MP3. For a decade, storage efficiency has been gained at the cost of nearly 90% of the original audio data on music CDs: all of which is lost through compression. This compression process is irreversible - once your music is compressed, it will never sound like the original. MP3 and variants like AAC and WMA are lossy formats. By contrast, "lossless" formats like FLAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF retain a bit-identical 'zipped' version of the original music to ensure absolute music fidelity. "The state of the art streaming adopted by services like Spotify, Beats Music, Deezer and Qobuz (among many others) is up to 320kbps for lossy quality (MP3) and up to 1,411kbps for lossless CD quality (FLAC). The problem of delivering high quality music in a convenient way, requires a new solution: OraStream. Beyond MP3 and CD, OraStream was purposed and built from ground up to 'fluidify' the downloading and *_streaming_of_high-resolution_music_up_to_9,216_kbps_(or__192kHz/24-bit)_over_any_data_network_*. "OraStream uses a lossless compression algorithm. However, it has the unique advantage of transforming the compressed bitstream into fine-grained scalable layers while maintaining its 'losslessness'. We shave away data layers to fit the bitstream nicely through the available network bandwidth, without any expensive transcoding. This is the value of OraStream." Has anyone researched this yet? Will the Ultra Hi-Rez stream require use of the EDO plugin or not? Is anyone working on an OraStream plug-in for Squeezebox or IckStream? *Source*: Streaming TIDAL, Pandora, other > Logitech Media Server 7.7.5-ickStream plugin, with iPeng app on iPhone5s/iPad *Great Room*: SB Touch(1) > AudioQuest Toslink > PS Audio DL3 DAC > Audio Envy interconnect cables > Martin Logan Purity/powered & synched SB Touch(2) > JVC 110w amp > Martin Logan Motion 4 *Adjacent*: synched SB Touch(2) > AudioEngine 5/powered *Master Bedroom*: Samsung Blu-ray player/Pandora > older Sony Wega TV with excellent speakers WTB: SB Touch, send private message DanSmedra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62637 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102914 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SB Player MAC Address
So here's a question. Each Squeezebox device is assigned a unique player MAC address. When connecting to mysqueezebox.com, an individual's account becomes associated with that device..."Add Player". Now assume the device is sold to a third party, but the seller has forgotten to log into their account, forgot their password, etc., and to "Delete Player" (disassociate unit from server). Can that SB device be associated with another account, or will mysqueezebox.com reject the multiple associations? Can the player's MAC address be reset, or is it embedded in the firmware and can't be changed? *Source*: Streaming TIDAL, Pandora, other > Logitech Media Server 7.7.5-ickStream plugin, with iPeng app on iPhone5s/iPad *Great Room*: SB Touch(1) > AudioQuest Toslink > PS Audio DL3 DAC > Audio Envy cables > Martin Logan Purity/powered & synched JVC 110w amp > Martin Logan Motion 4 *Adjacent*: synched SB Touch(2) > AudioEngine 5/powered *Master Bedroom*: Samsung Blu-ray player/Pandora > older Sony Wega TV with excellent speakers WTB: SB Touch, send private message DanSmedra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62637 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102894 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Is the Sun Setting on Squeezebox...?
I've been user and fan of Logitech Squeezebox products for several years. This community has worked endless hours to keep Squeezebox viable. If you're streaming into a quality (higher fidelity) audiophile system, TIDAL via ickStream, makes a noticeable difference. Select the same tract of music and then listen at 192, 320, & 1411kbps. Re: [slim] Beats Music opens up, making its API public
Let's hope someone at Logitech and Beats speaks for these companies and gives valid information. The MOG library was deep, but they probably had to renegotiate all the source contracts, which could have been a huge job.
