Re: [slim] 7.6 is totally broken
Michael, I suppose I was expecting some sort of formal post saying something along the lines of: 1) 7.6 appears to have caused a lot of problems (which is not mentioned in the 7.6 release post); 2) it is being investigated as a matter of priority, and; 3) advising customers of any subsequent releases that fix it. As for my own problems, 7.6 seemed to break various different parts of my system. It seemed clear that something had gone wrong - these things happen - and that it simply needed fixing rather than scrutinising in detail on my part. In view of that I would expect prompt and visible remediation. I arguably shouldn't have to hunt around for nightly builds. However, it's helpful that you mention that fact (thank you) so I shall experiment. Just to reiterate, and as I say above, I like the Squeeze ecosystem, and so wouldn't like this to be interpreted negatively. Also, the community and its support network is a great strength. -- Hercules Hercules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8679 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89144 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] 7.6 is totally broken
I've downgraded to 7.5 and my Squeezebox and Squeeze Radio are now working ok. If anyone knows how to stop the Squeeze Radio from frequently prompting to upgrade to the latest firmware then please let me know (as I'm thinking that upgrading will stop it working again). I have to say that I'm really surprised at the apparent lack of engagement by Logitech on these forums about this issue, but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place? I should add that I'm otherwise very happy with the Squeeze range of products, and this is clearly a rare exceptional problem. -- Hercules Hercules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8679 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89144 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The upgrade to v7.6 seems to have broken everything... Thanks very much all for the replies. The GPS requirement is more for fun rather for serious minute-by-minute use to guide me round the trails. I'd imagine keeping it in my camelbak then stopping to pulling it out every so often to work out where i am As regards synching my library is a mixture of FLAC and MP3. I was assuming that the flactomp3 utility would allow me to create a duplicate library, and be sophisticated enough to just copy MP3 files and convert FLAC files. [slim] Should I buy an iPhone?
It's about time I got a new phone. I'm trying to decide whether to get an iPhone and would appreciate your thoughts on the iPhone, as well as on my situation. Thank you! My requirements are for a device that: - acts as both a phone and an mp3 player (thereby replacing my current Sony K800i phone and Cowon iAudio 7 mp3 player) - will work well with my private Gmail (but won't need to use my work email) - has a reasonably good GPS that I would be able to use for getting around (including while cycling on-road and off-road) - is a fun gadget :-) My primary concern is whether the use of iTunes will have a detrimental on my well-structured and time-consumingly-tagged music library. I accept that I will need to create a second mirrored music library in mp3 format (as the majority of my music is currently FLAC). I'm concerned that iTunes will start messing around with my music files (i.e. restructure them, change tags, etc.). While in theory that shouldn't be an issue - as it will be a "disposable" copy library that could be easily recreated - I'd guess that a library that is prone to being reorganised by iTunes would be difficult to synchronise with the main library. I'd prefer to use another application to iTunes but recognise that iTunes has broader benefits that will make it worth using. And maybe I'm being paranoid about iTunes :-) I'd appreciate any thoughts from those of you who have been through similar decisions, as well as general comments on the pros and cons of the iPhone itself. I have to admit the iPhone does look cool and I am tempted:-) -- Hercules Hercules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8679 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65750 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

apartment or small house, excellent remote control, easy access to online digital music services and locally stored digital files. Cons: Not quite as easy to set up as the rival Sonos system, cannot play DRM-protected audio files, bandwidth-hungry. The receiver acts as a bridge between a home network and a home theatre system, hi-fi or simple powered speakers. It connects to a sound system using standard analogue or digital cables, and to a home network (and the internet) using either Wi-Fi wireless technology or ethernet cables. The wireless remote controller, comfortable to hold and easy to use, has an iPod-style wheel to navigate a PC- (or Mac-) based digital music collection, connect to online music services such as Rhapsody and access internet radio stations. SHORT CUTS TO MORE ENJOYABLE LISTENING AROUND THE HOME Q. What is the easiest way to play my PC-based MP3 files over my home stereo? If you dont mind hard-wiring your PC, consider Xitels low cost HiFi- Link for PCs. Alternatively, Audioengines AW1 Wireless Adapter is simple to set up but you may have to put up with some music drop-outs. Q. What if I also want to stream images and video from my PC to a home theatre system? Consider connecting your system to a media server such as those from D-Link, Netgear and Linksys. These can stream most digital content to a television as well as handling basic audio files and internet-based music services. Q. I want to build a multi-room wireless audio system. What system should I choose? If you are willing to pay for a solid, high-performance system that could hardly be easier to set up and operate, choose the Sonos Digital Music System. [slim] Should I upgrade to Vista?
As I'm currently a "Windows" (rather than "Linux") person, and enjoy tinkering, I'm thinking of upgrading my PC from XP to Vista. The PC is beefy enough to cope (with 2GB of RAM - and space for more if necessary - and a fast processor). The Asus site says my motherboard is supported, and the various motherboard drivers are available for download. I only have 3 components attached to the motherboard - 2 hard-drives and an DVD/RW drive - and I am asusming they will be readily supported. The main uses of the computer at the moment revolve around general messing about (surfing, e-mailing, watching vids in VideoLAN, etc.), some work in MS Office 2007, and of course the various activities associated with my Squeezebox (running SlimServer, managing music with a combination of EAC, FLAC, MP3Tag & Foobar2000). So, should I take the plunge, or is Vista still a little too rough around the edges (as the "Vista" sticky thread perhaps suggests)? -- Hercules Hercules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8679 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35158 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Which mp3 player?
My old iRiver H120 MP3 player (which I have rockboxed to run FLAC) is on its last legs - the screen is badly cracked, and something in the headphone socket is a little loose as it crackles a bit - and I am looking to replace it. Increasingly, my music is in FLAC format. I'm not sure I can be bothered to manage two music libraries - i.e. one in FLAC, and then another transcoded into MP3 - so am looking for a player that works well with FLAC. I realise I won't notice the difference between a good MP3 and FLAC when I'm out and about, but as I say, managing two libraries strikes me as unnecessary chore :-) So, does anyone have any recommendations for a good MP3 player that supports FLAC? Re: [slim] Gapless playback not working?
I had an interesting experience with pcutmp3 earlier this week. I used it to cut up a mix album into separate mp3 files, and then added the files to my SlimServer music directory, and rescanned. When I tried to play back the new files, my Squeezebox seemed to work ok, but there was no audio, and the playback froze, in that the progress bar wouldn't move forward. And once that had happened, the Squeezebox wouldn't play back any other music, even though I could still use all the menus etc. The only way to correct the problem was to reboot the Squeezebox. If I then tried to play back different music (to the newly-split mp3 files) then everything worked ok. But as soon as I tried to play the new files, it would freeze again. It was definitely caused by the newly-split mp3 files, because when I removed them - or just didn't use them - it all started working ok again! So, to get to my point, I came to the conclusion that pcutmp3 was doing something to the mp3 files that somehow made them incompatible with my Squeezebox/SlimServer. -- Hercules Hercules's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8679 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32080 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Interestingly, while MixMeister has written all the BPM info to my music files, it's not being picked up by SlimServer. Having just looked at one of the files in a hex editor it appears that the BPM info is kinda "double-spaced", so I'm guessing it's been written in unicode? Here are the hex values, and corresponding characters (where appropriate) for a track's 126.02 BPM tag. Does my unicode theory look correct? 54 42 50 4D 00 00 00 11 00 00 01 FF FE 31 00 32 00 36 00 2E 00 30 00 32 00 T B P M . . . . . . . . . 1 . 2 . 6 . . . 0 . 2 . I assume that SlimServer supports unicode tags, and guess that the specific problem in this instance is that the BPM tags are different to my other tags (as they have been written using MP3 Tag following the "ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1" format as recommended in the SlimDevices wiki) and so are confusing SlimServer? Any views on the best solution? Find a different piece of software that writes tags in non-unicode (whatever that's called!)?
