With the never-ending price drops in hard drive prices, why not just
rip to WAV files and not worry about FLAC?

erm ... cos FLAC has tags ... and if you save 40% of hard disk space ...
FLAC does make a difference when you have lots of tracks ...

you need the id3v2 tag support component, and you need to set write v1

make sure you select whether you want ISO ot UTF tags (default setting is
UTF i think).

it workd fine for me on 12K tracks ...

Mr_Smiley said the following on 02/27/2006 12:20 AM:

Foobar deleted my ID3v2 tags leaving only v1 on about a third of my
files. It also clipped some of the longer artist names. And to top it
all off it added varius simbols to the end of most of the artists,
albums and titles.

Sounds like you need to configure foobar to write ID3v2 tags and not
id3v1 tags (which have a length limit).

Thanks. Now that I think about it I did know about that setting. My

area. However, I still can't find anything about using iTunes volume
adjustment like the wikipedia suggests. I used foobar to add replay
gain on my test database. I used the newest version and tested the tag
writing like it was suggested. Things worked great so I set it up to
run on the whole database last night. It screwed up over a third of my
tags. Glad I didn't do it on my main database.

Subject: [slim] Multiple genres in tags

OK ... this is going to be a hard one to pin down I think. But any
help/advice appreciated.

I have recently started using the multiple items in tags feature with a
semicolon (;) delimitor. In a few istances this is in the artist field,
and that appears to be working well.

In my genre field however, complete chaos seems to have broken out :). I
can't see any pattern to the behaviour, though it is consistent in that
specific files are similarly tagged after any rescan. It's just the genre
tags are not what I am expecting. I get the following types of behaviour:

- Some files are genre tagged correctly (both with single and multiple
tags)
- Some specify no genre at all (even in cases where there is only one
value and no delimiter)

- Others specify just one of the multiple values in the file

Like I said, the bahaviour is consistent in that a specific file will
display the same characteristic (i.e. one of the above) after a rescan.

Some observations:

- In certain cases I have gone completely over the top and have 4 or 5
values in the genre field (separated by semicolons). Maybe there is some
limit I am not aware of???
- One of the genre values is 12' so I can easily access all 12' singles
i have ripped. Not sure if the ' character could be causing an issue, i.e.
only letters an numbers supported???
- This one is really odd, but when I am rescanning to build the database,
the genres seem to be coming up correctly. I can only explain this with an
example: Several files have Tech House as a value. Typically, the
actuall field value would be House;Tech House;12'. Now, during the
actual process of scanning, if I select Tech House from within Browse
Genres it shows me an increasing number of files and everything looks OK.
But once scanning is complete, if I select Tech House, I get just a
single song ... the same one each time. I have looked at the tags with my
tag editor and they all seem fine (but there are a lot of files).

Am running a recent 6.2.2 nightly on windows, but have been having the
same behaviour for some time.

If anyone has any suggestions, even just suggestions of how I migh be able
to troubleshoot, it would be appreciated.

Many thx.

Thank you to everyone who provided insight to my tagging question.

Before I start the process of using multiple genre tags - how are these
handled in the iPod? Does it recognize multiple genres, just take the
first one, or does is see the whole string as a genre?

I couldn't agree with Snarlydwarf more. I tidied up all my tags using
(mostly) MusicBrainz and some other lookup programs, but then
immediately went back and redid all the Genre tags for two reasons:

1) Music classification is personal and genre tagging (IMHO) totally
random. I've had each disc of a two disc album classified for genre
totally differently. Also, I don't use some of the very common genre
tags (Electronica for example).

2) I use multiple genre tags in Slimserver.

A good interface to use to redo your genre tags is Tag Rename (30 day
free trial). Speeds the whole process up.

Re: Music Magic, as far as I know it doesn't use the Genre information
at all - it analyses and validates all your music using an algorithm
and then matches those with similar results. If you're getting odd
results, it may be worth checking your preferences and setting the
variety options to low. Also, have you let MM analyse and validate
the entire library - this can take a good while (overnight in my case)
so it may be it hasn't finished reviewing everything yet ?

It uses the file's last modified date/time. Because of the way it
works, it may be valuable to have a program that can set the last
modified time of files. I have one that's a Windows Explorer extension
that I sometimes use after editing tags. Some programs automatically
preserve the modified time. I think metaflac does this, and IIRC
flac.exe also stamps the same modified date/time on flac files as the
original WAV.

One (welcome) quirk of the NAS and tagging program I use is that when I
edit tags in files stored on the NAS, the last modified time doesn't
change, so I don't have to bother resetting them.

At the moment the only functionality is to send tracks to append to the

However, Musicmagic is so good that even this is an improvement over
the Slimserver web interface - Musicmagic's library can be searched and
sorted much more easily than Slimserver's. It talks to Slimserver via
the CLI, so in time it may have much better functionality.
It can be used unregistered (I forget what restrictions the
unregistered version has)

Subject: [slim] Squeezebox Or Glorified PC?

I have a SqueezeBox 2, and I'm about to order, right at this very
minute, a SB3, but...

this question keeps coming into my head.

Why buy a SqueezeBox?

A PC or some other type of system is needed to run SlimServer. Okay,
but...

You then need either a) Softsqueeze, or b) an actual hardware
SqueezeBox to play your music.

Now assume a motherboard/mainboard that has an on-board digital co-ax
or SP/DIF output; can't the Softsqueeze player output via this to an
amplifier with digital in, so negating the need for an actual
SqueezeBox? Why pay $250+ for an SB? Isn't this overkill?

Now if I want to send the same music to different locations then can't
a PC be set-up running SoftSqueeze in each location, utilizing the
on-board SP/DIF output for digital quality audio?

Please someone give me the reason why I need to purchase another actual
SqueezeBox hardware unit. BTW the need to have a
motherboard/ram/powersupply at each location I want music in is
irrelevant, and let's say I can get these at roughly equivalent cost to
the SB3. And let's assume I can hide away these components behind the
walls/in a cupboard so no case/enclosure needed...

Discuss. Any help on this would be extremely grateful.

OK. Now I'm confused. I had Foobar2000 go through all my MP3's and
add replaygain tags. The gain information is visible via Foobar2000
and MP3tag 2.33a (so it's there).

However, when I look at what SlimServer is reading for the tag
information (via web interface), it's all zero's. What gives?

I'm running the latest beta of 6.2 and I've done some complete DB
rescans. In listening it didn't seem like replay gain was making any
difference, and as it turns out, looks like SlimServer isn't picking up
the data. Any ideas?

RE: [slim] Tracks featuring other artists

2005-10-22 Thread Howard Darwen
there's no easy solution as far as i can see. i use the same method as you -
put everything in the ARTIST tag. you could split the artists out like you
say, but after a lot of thought i came to the conclusion that putting
everything in the one tag was the most sensible - and it comes up as a
selection in an artist search anyway. also, there are other examples of
similar situations: use of presents and versus for example:

Lenny Fontana pres. Cassioware
Cracked Logic vs. Zed's Ded

you'd need solutions for all of them, not to mention occasional use of
with and even showcases. and things can get really out of control when
multiple use comes into play - e.g. my all time favourite:

Blaze pres. Underground Dance Artists United For Life feat. Barbara
Tucker

Subject: [slim] Tracks featuring other artists

I tried asking about this in the Ripping list, but got no responses, so I
thought I'd open it up to a wider audience...

What do people think the best way is to tag tracks such as Twista feat
Kanya West Jamie Foxx?

I currently have a few of these tracks with the whole string entered in a
single ARTIST tag. I'd like to tag them as separate artists, with
associated ARTISTSORT tags.

Eg. I could enter the example above as:

ARTIST = Twista;Kanya West;Jamie Foxx
ARTISTSORT = Twista;West, Kanya;Foxx, Jamie

I think this is a little better. However, this would mean I am losing the
information that associates the 2nd and 3rd atists as featuring artists;
browsing the entry would list the artist as Twister and Kanya West and
Jamie Foxx. I wondered if there is a tag for listing the featuring
artists? I've seen an INVOLVEDPERSONS tag - but I guess there's no specific
support for the tag in SlimServer, or an associated SORT tag.

Perhaps as an enhancement, a special character after the separator character
could indicate to SlimServer to use feat. instead of and as separator
text? Eg. something like ARTIST = Twista;+Kanya West;Jamie Foxx

I'm also thinking that the featured artists shouldn't be listed in Browse
Artists, unless they are also in the library as an album artist - like how
teh new various artist logic works.

What should I do? How have others organised their tags?

RE: [slim] Backup: REV drive or external HD?

2005-08-23 Thread Howard Darwen
Personally, I use an extra external hard disc. It's more expensive, but it's
a little quicker/easier, and it means that any tweeks made to the tags as I
go along are also backed up (I'm forever fixing small mistakes in stuff I
thought was correct first time round).

What is the general consensus on the best way to back up our 250GB+ and
growing FLAC collections?

REV drive and a few REV disks stored at a friends house in event of
fire or external hard drive etc..

why not just get Music Magic and create the playlists dynamically from one

How about a send to plugin

Hold down some button on the remote. A send to dialog would appear on

to or option to create a new one.

As a new SB user, I'm astounded that this isn't standard behaviour. One
of the reasons for buying it was to make it easy to create a 'Party

RE: [slim] Re: Feature request - guessing tags

2005-08-04 Thread Howard Darwen
on your original post it's not clear what you are trying to do. there are no
month and day tags as such, only year. just use something like ARTIST -
YEAR - ALBUM, and put the month and date info in the album field if you want
to see it. be careful that you don't have different albums with the same
album name though, as slim will see these as the same album i think.

RE: [slim] MusicMagic - bizarre mixes..

2005-07-31 Thread Howard Darwen
most of the mixes i get out are pretty spot on ... there are occasional
tracks that are missplaced, but i just live with it.

one thing i have done is put stuff i don't want included in MMM mixes in a
separate folder so that they don't get picked up by MMM - but slim can still
see them. i do this mainly on mix albums where i don't want individual mixed
tracks popping up in a play list, but you could handle embarassing stuff in
that way too.

Subject: [slim] MusicMagic - bizarre mixes..

Recently got MusicMagic plugin up and running, and wondering if anyone
can share some MM experiences with me?

On the whole, I'm finding it pretty cool: it's generating some decent
mixes for middle of the road stuff, but it seems to generate some
unusual mixes for on the edge sort of stuff.

e.g. if I go for a mix around some mainstream indie music (think Oasis,
Coldplay, Travis - and you've got the general idea), it works like a
charm. But if I go for a mix around some metal (think Helmet, Quarashi,
Pantera etc) then it throws in a fair bit of techno-dance, and some
embarrassing pop. Similarly, if I go for a hard-house type mix it
throws in quite a lot of embarrassing pop.

When I say embarrassing pop I mean that I've got a Best Chart Hits in
the world... Ever!! album that I bought in a moment of madness.
Among a couple of half decent tracks, there's some absolute dirge -
including a kind half-hearted-attempt-at-reggae track by Boy George
which is just shameful. Particularly shameful when it turns up in a mix
of hard-house/trace. In fact, MM seems to love this Boy George track
and keeps trying to sneak it in to almost any mix I request which is a
bit irritating. I dare say it would fit quite well with something like
UB40, for example. But I can't understand why MM tries to stick it in
the middle of a punk-metal mix or a dangerously hard house mix.

I've played with a few of the settings on the SB web panel (e.g.
MusicMagic mix style at the max value of 200) but there seems to be
only a marginal improvement.

Also, MM application was running for nearly 2 days and has complete
analysis - all tracks are apparently verified, and I rebooted the server
and got slimserver to rescan the music library. As far as I can tell,
everything is as it should be on the slimserver side - any settings I
can play with in the MM application? I kind of loathe to delete stuff
from my music library just for this purpose. Even if I don't like a
some of the music, it goes against the whole idea of squeezebox to
delete tracks here and there.

Cheers!
Dan.

RE: [slim] Re: MusicMagic, SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3

2005-04-29 Thread Howard Darwen
from what i've worked out, it MMM does something like this ...

- first, MMM generates a fingerprint for each song, taking about 10 secs per
song
- if MMM can find that song from the fingerprint in the online database then
it can get the full analysis data from there (cos someone else has already
done it for you and it's been uploaded to the online database!)
- if the song is not in the online database then it takes roughly 80% of the
playtime of the song to analyse

for me it took 3 to 4 days continuous running to analyse 2000 FLACs. it's
hard to determine, but I think about half my music was not on the server.

on the first pass, i switched slim off for the analysis. i now have it on
again, but the analysis process does not work so well when both are on.
which is a total pain in the arse as i add music all the time and i don't
want to keep switching slim off.

if slim is on when you're analysing, from my experience it will either slow
it down massively or just grind to a halt completely. it also indicates slim
is hogging the CPU rather than MMM (which seems strange).

so i'm thinking of an alternative strategy where i do the analysis on my
normal PC, archive the info into the tags, then upload to the server. which
means the data is already there and MMM won't have to analyse. i don't
really like this though, and it would be better if things worked with both
services on at the server.

thx.

After more experimentation ('testing' would be too grand a word!) last
night, I found that there was some progress, it's just extremely slow.
I left my machine running MMM and SlimServer all evening, probably
around 3 hours, and of 2,000 songs I had the 'mm' icon down to early
'C' entries. After another hour, most of the 'C's had been done.

I don't know the precise alphabetical distribution of my collection,
but this implies it's got a way to go yet. I've left it running today
while I'm in the office. Hopefully it'll reach a point where SlimServer
knows all about the MMM library and will then, with a sigh of relief,
slip back into normal running.

Does this fit with other people's experience when first introducing MMM
and SS to each other? People have posted issues of 30 min delays when
adding an album's worth of songs, but nothing about the initial scan.
Maybe it's something with these particular versions - if you initially
scanned your collection with earlier versions you're okay?

That leads to another question. If I upgrade either MMM or SS, will I
have to repeat this painful process?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

RE: [slim] Re: Tagging WAV files

2005-04-29 Thread Howard Darwen
as far as i know you can tag wavs using the INFO chunk but hardly any
software supports this, and those that do are fairly unuseable for mass
tagging.

EAC lets you add an ID3tag to a WAV, but am not sure if slim will pick this
up (most software will not).

i spent ages trying to do this and in the end just decided FLAC was my only
option. and am happy i went that way now as it saves me disc space as well.

thx.

As far as I know, .WAV files cannot be tagged. However .FLAC files ARE
tagged, and LOSSLESS. SB2 works perfectly with .FLAC Best approach is
to rip CD's to FLAC using EAC, for bit-perfect extraction. Also, if for
any reason you need to edit tags after ripping the files, and if running
Windows OS, I recommend a freeware program called AudioShell which lets
you edit .FLAC tags by just right-clicking on the file!

Well, having left MMM and SS thrashing away while I went to the office,
I got back to find that they've sorted themselves out and all songs
have the 'mm' logo next to them. CPU is down to standard, though it
does seem to have the odd busy moment which also causes a pause in
playing. My SB2 hasn't arrived yet, so I'm just running SoftSqueeze -
hopefull a hardware buffer will take care of that.

So, all in all it seems to work. Just takes a healthy dose of
patience... I guess the reason why SS takes so long to read a fully
analyzed and verified MMM library will remain a mystery for now.

Thanks to all for you input.

RE: [slim] MusicMagic, SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3

2005-04-26 Thread Howard Darwen
Strange as MMM should be the process hogging CPE when it's scanning as far
as I can see. Am not sure what slim could be doing. I've actually turned
slim off while MMM is scanning my library - not because it was consuming
CPU, it's just MMM randomly stopped when I had slim on, and it seems to be
running more consistently now.

I have MMM scanning a subset of my files right now. Started on Sunday on a
batch of 2000 FLACS and it has about 400 to go. But it depends on whether
the songs in your collection already exist in the music magic online
database or not - or that's what I have assumed from what I have read. If a
track is already in the online database then MMM only seems to have to
generate a fingerprint (10 secs or so). If the track can't be found in the
database from the fingerprint then MMM does a detailed analysis - which
apparently takes 80% of the songs playtime. Most of my tunes seem not to be
there :)

Thx.

I've installed SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3 to get to grips
with things while I wait for my SB2 to arrive.

This evening I tried integrating MusicMagic. It took a while to get the
two talking to each other, solved only when the mysterious 'Use

As soon as that was checked things fell into place. However, slim.exe
has been running at near 100% CPU ever since. I guess this is while it
reads the MusicMagic data.

Is this normal, and if so how long can I expect it to last? At present
the whole thing is unusable. I'm running XP SP2 on a machine with
plenty of grunt.

Thanks in advance.
