If you want one for home check E-bay, there are good deals to be had.
Also, for serious work, the $500 is money well spent. After getting
used to using one at work I had to get one for home. No, I didn't
spend $500 on it either.

On topic - there are some guys that are just happier playing with
electronics than managing people. I could see how selling your company
to a larger corporation is a valid way to do that. You can push the
admin junk off to others letting you stay in charge of the vision of
the products and keep your hands dirty, but have people with the full
time job of running the show.

Re: [slim] NAS vs Silent PC

2009-01-24 Thread Jonnio

Dogberry2;387373 Wrote:
This question comes up so often it should probably have its own forum,
and every time it does, comments that focus solely on Slim/Squeeze miss
the point of when and why a NAS makes sense. If the only thing of
interest to a user is running SqueezeCenter and serving up a few
thousand music tracks, a NAS probably isn't really necessary.

But to those who have other things going on in their lives, a NAS can,
and often does, make sense. I have yet to see a small, low-power PC
that has four (or more) hot-swap drive bays and a footprint of less
than 70 square inches (450 square cm). With five full-time PCs in the
house, plus occasional come-and-go laptops, a central networked file
server that has plenty of capacity and is painlessly expandable makes
sense for accessible, redundant storage of data, including massive
amounts of not only music, but photos, video, business and financial
documents, software, and everything else. It can host nightly backups
of all the computers, and then itself be backed up either on- or
offsite, weekly (or whatever other schedule is suitable). The fact that
it can also do duty as a music server is a side benefit, not its primary
function. It's primarily a storage server (hence the name), and when not
viewed through the narrow lens of SqueezeCenter-only it can, for some
households, be an excellent option. For others, of course, it is
completely unnecessary. But just saying a NAS is stupid doesn't
really do justice to the topic. It's like saying a pickup truck is
stupid just because you happen to live in a condo in the city. Not
everybody has the same needs, interests, skills or experience, and what
makes no sense for some might make very good sense for others.

Dogberry, again, not one thing that you said is NAS specific. Your
description is exactly what I have said before where you have a very
limited subset of server functionality running on a slow PC. My whole
point of a small pc being able to do so much more than a NAS was the
exact opposite of your squeezecenter narrow lens thought. You can set
up a small microATX computer with nearly the same footprint and more
than four hard drives easily. Granted, only two or three will usually
be hot swappable, but who really cares about that at home?

Also, a server at home can do everything you described and more. It
can also be your primary DHCP server if you want more power than your
router gives you, be a web proxy so that you can control your kids and
your guests internet access, run a webserver to host files for your
friends and family to download and more. The sky is pretty much the
limit with a small linux or windows home server, the hardware and built
in firmware is the limit with a NAS. Your situation is actually the
exact scenario I would recommend someone build a more beefy server with
either WHS (if you don't want to learn linux) or Ubuntu/Debian.

2009-01-08 Thread Jonnio

I think these are some really cool products, but as has been said this
is a direct shot at Sonos, not as much at squeeze.

This will likely go one of two ways - it will be a decent hit and grab
some amount of the market share or help grow the market.

OR

It will be a huge flop - introducing all of the products at once like
this they better have them COMPLETELY worked out. People won't put up
with growing pains when they have thousands invested in the
equipment, and there won't be any cool new products to bring people
back in to try again. This gives them one shot with the majority of
their people. If they don't make it count the products are doomed.

Small switches do exist for sure, but ones that are by default ethernet
powered are harder to come by. Typically you put a PoE adapter at your
router and the tap at the switch. They are pretty pricey though as
they are made for remote mounting equipment where power doesn't exist,
not just hiding wires.

It might be worth a call to slim to have them see if there is something
they can do in a future firmware update to remedy this.

Actually, legally, its a whole new ballgame. Once you start breaking
file encryption, even if its to play on unsupported hardware that you
legally own, your breaking the law (at least in the US).

That is why people are so anti-DRM. It is not designed to protect the
rights of the music industry against piracy it is designed to allow
them to tell you how you can use the content that you legally own.

Sounds like I have lots of room to grow!

I was kind of thinking if there was a near term break point that people
have found in which network bandwidth, server horsepower (on a typical
older used pc), or the ability for players to sync up started to
suffer.

The other, bigger part, was just curiosity on how many people are going
hog wild in their house.

Re: [slim] Man, I cannot wait until they activate the headphone jack on the Controller....

2008-08-18 Thread Jonnio

The battery is actually quite large - it is over twice the size of an
IPOD touch and larger than an IPhone - both of which people use to
stream music regularly and have much larger screens to take up battery
juice.

I have no idea whether what you say about the sizes is true or not. But
the same certainly can't be said about the battery capacity.

The iPhone has a larger battery capacity at 1400mAh compared to the SBC
at 1250mAh. The Touch is about the same as the SBC.

From the tests I have seen with the Touch, it can survive about 3-4
hours on battery while using wifi constantly. And that is without doing
 any music playback.

So to expect the SBC to last as long as that when streaming over wifi
and playing back the music sounds like wishful thinking to me.

I saw the Iphone at 1200 and the touch at 500...I can dig out the sites
if that helps, not saying they are necessarily right, but that's what my
research found.

This one looks fairly definitive and puts the Touch at 900 and the

Yeah, I found some other sites offering OEM touch batteries at 900 mah
too. Still 30%ish less than the Duet remote. I am thinking about
grabbing my Arcos and doing a streaming music test just for the heck of
it and see what it gets streaming wifi with the display off.

[slim] Help with controller problem

2008-08-07 Thread Jonnio

I started having a problem last night with my Duet controller. After
listening to a radio stream or Pandora (via squeezenetwork) for a few
minutes the controller would no longer respond to menu selections. So
if I wanted to back out and switch to a different radio station I
couldn't. It did still work fine for pause, skip, etc... If I turn
the controller off and back on then it starts working again for a few
minutes.

Anyone have this problem or a solution to it?

Are you getting the blue connection icon on Squeezebox Controller?

If so, your router likely does not support the wake part of the

 you running?

 Mike

No, I am not getting the blue icon. I am actually still able to
control the receiver, just nothing that requires me to press the middle
button to go deeper into a menu choice. The router is a Linksys WRT54G
running DD-WRT.

I will call support tonight if its still doing it when I get home. I
also need to do some more experimenting with my local server vs.
squeezenetwork.

Well, it appears to be a squeezenetwork issue. I switched to my local
server this afternoon and it has been running flawlessly since.

[slim] Anyone know about the current mail in rebate?

2008-07-16 Thread Jonnio

I got the go ahead from the Wife to get a duet and an extra receiver, so
I have been shopping around. I have found one site that references a
Logitech rebate on 10% off of 2+ products, but I can't even find it on
Logitech's website.

Has anyone successfully used this via amazon or BH?

Thanks

Re: [slim] Archos 605 and Squeeze Center

2008-07-12 Thread Jonnio

I have connected with the nokia skin just fine. I just went to
http://your.pc.ip.address:9000/Nokia770/

However, since every time the archos shuts off you have to re-establish
the wireless link and rebrowse to the page I quickly gave up on it.
