It depends... I would like to satisfy two scenarios: 1 - Connect to a DAC, Amp and then Speakers 2 - Connect to a receiver and be part of an existing setup Having an "interface" like the SB3 or the Touch is not necessary. My control is largely via iPeng or the WebInterface. Finally, LMS is the brains of my system and I still really like it. It runs on a virtual machine. This makes it easy to move or to recover from when three are hardware issues. ---- Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108823 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?
So... I really did expect this explosion of replies. Wow - thank you! It's probably worth me providing a little more detail as to what I actually listen to 1 - My own library (painstakingly assembled over decades (honestly) and ripped at the highest possible rate. There is a appreciable chunk (~15%) of my content that doesn't exist on the streaming services) 2 - Radio streams like NPR via TuneIn 3 - I airplay podcasts via a parallel source The Pi options are intriguing. Whatever source I use has to have either RCA or optical or both. So, I'm uncertain about the DigiOne option. [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?
Hi All, I'm a long-term SqueezeBox owner (going back to 2006) and it has been one of my best purchases. My hardware it mostly soldiering on but I'm sure at some point they will start to fail. I've had a SB3 fail and replaced it with a Touch, courtesy of Ebay. This works fine as an interim fix but my concern is the long term. I've looked at other options (like SONOS) but none of them provide the flexibility and scale that I currently have. What are your strategies to keep the music playing? [slim] So, what exactly is the future of streaming audio going to be?
Hi All I ask the question in this post as a slightly philosophical one and I'd really appreciate this forum's thoughts on the matter. I have been using my Sueezeboxes for a hair under 6 years now and I love them. In addition, there still appear to be only two viable alternatives in this market (Sonos being the other). I continue to hear about on-line winning this battle and I have dabbled with most of these services (Rhapsody / Pandora / Slacker / Spotify) and while each is interesting none of them solve the following problems: - My taste in music. Try to find "Change your mind" by Gary Numan or "Thunderbirds are Go" by MC Parker. (I'm not too sure what this says about me though.) My point is that no online library can be exhaustive. - Music quality. I use FLAC and, well, online isn't going to do that. - Ease of control. I just love iPeng and I've not seen something similar for on-line only options. - Whole home audio. It's so, so cool to add or remove devices at will as needed to distribute music. So, what are the next pretenders to the throne? What's the hardware? What's the software? My collection includes: - 1 x SB3 - 1 x Boom - 2 x Duet I love the quality of the sound, the 3rd party applications, the easy access to some 60,000 tracks AND the ability to stream podcasts and radio stations seamlessly. I absolutely LOVE the fact that I can control all the units using my iPhone or ProntoSqueeze. The only down side has been that the software has been a little odd from time to time but for me the system is rock solid. Perhaps this is as I'm a networking guy by trade which means GigE everywhere, a stable wireless infrastructure and manged address allocation. Regardless, I love the little things. [slim] A little thank you...
Dear SlimDevices / Logitech I have owned an SB3 for about 30 months. More recently I have added a DUET and a Squeezebox Boom to my collection. Each one meets a specific requirement. This message is my way of passing on some positive feedback to those who have helped bring these devices to fruition (including those with the thankless task of producing some of the most awesome plugins). Admittedly, it has not been a completely smooth ride but I do live on the bleeding edge of the feature and push them a little harder than most. Having said that, my Squeeze Triumvirate continues to make me smile and it gets a big nod of approval from my better half. Even better, new features continue to be added! I am an ardent supporter of constructive criticism but I would like to add my very small voice as a vote of thanks for a product that continues to make me smile every time I use it. -- Kaizen28 Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57290 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] New user's experience on SC: Slow, unintuitive, generally not fun
Hi I really need to comment here as I'm not always a fan of SC but the comparison to Sooloos is unfair. There are too many unknowns in that demo. A head-to-head comparison via browser interfaces running on the same hardware across the same network would have been more relevant. While the big screen is cool, you're not going to strap it to your belt and walk around the house with it. Also, while you may think it looks good, WAF (wife acceptance factor) is really low if it's in public etc. etc. The comment made about the performance of a closed system versus an open one is also very accurate. I work with applications the run on Windows and are accessed via a web interface. Even with the most brutal hardware the performance of the interface is unlikely to meet your "snappy" requirement. It really depends on what you want the system to do. The fast, open and subtle operation of SC wins for me. -- Kaizen28 Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51305 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi All I have recently downgraded from 7.1 (whatever Tuesday's build was) back to 7.0.1 - 19705 and I'm encountering a number of problems: 1) If pause is selected from the controller or web interface, or if the SB3 is switched off, a "connection failure" message is displayed on the controller and the SB3. The track that was being played returns to the beginning. 2) The controller is missing the option of browsing my music folders. This may be related to the next item. 3) Despite rescanning my music library (which resides on a NAS) I still have a library which shows 0 artists. I've watched the scan and all seems to go well but on a restart all is gone. The problem needs to be clarified and then corrected. -- Kaizen28 ---- Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47767 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SBC r2448 less stable ?
Hi I'm definitely seeing something similar to you and it's VERY irritating. I've not had the the controller rebooting itself but every morning the controller shows the blue wi-fi icon and it makes no attempt to reconnect with the SC. Only a reboot fixes it. What is particularly odd is that I don't use the system during the day (about 8 hours) and when I use it at night, all is well. However after 6 hours of sleep the system goes into this weird state. It seems something in particular is happening over night. This when the music scan happens and the SC is running on a dedicated XP box. Is there a setting I've missed? [slim] Creating Playlists from On-Line Services like "Slacker"
Hi All Is it possible to create a playlist from a service such as Slacker with SC 7.0? When I have a particular Slacker station playing, I have used the web interface to save the station as a playlist but when the playlist is selected, the connection fails for some reason. Amy I doing something wrong or is this not supported? I ask as I'd like to wake up to music from Slacker. [slim] Album Art only seen when paused or switched off
Hi I have noticed that from time to time I will encounter tracks where the album art is not shown when the track is played. Rather the music notes are shown on the controller. However, when I pause or switch off the player, a small window slides up and a "mini" album art image is shown. Does this have something to do with how I've tagged the files or is there something else I can do short of a rescan. As an example, I have seen this with my podcasts that I download weekly. [slim] Possible problem: IRBlaster and SC7
Hi All I'm not sure to whom this should be addressed bu any feedback would be appreciated... I'm using SC7 with IRBlaster and almost everything is working flawlessly. I have noticed though that when the alarm function is used, my SB3 starts playing but the POWER-ON IR command is not sent so the amplifier remains off. POWER-ON only appears to be sent when either the power or play buttons are pressed on the remote. However, my testing has not been extensive. Re: [slim] Controlling a hidden SB3
Hi FredBasset That's excellent feedback. The SB3 will be up against a Escient ZP-1 which works really well with the Pronto. While I love my SB3 and will continue to use it in the master suite, I may sadly go with the ZP-1 if integration proves simpler. [slim] Controlling a hidden SB3
Hi All I am in the final stages of putting together the specs for my home audio system. The intention is to use a single remote to control everything and I will need to have all my components concealed. This presents something of a challenge for the SB3 given the need to see what is displayed to control it. I've seen a link where the Philips Pronto 9600 is used and this looks really promising as it's a remote I have me eye on. I'm curious to know how others have solved the problem of controlling a SB3 that has been hidden from view and if anyone else is using the TSU-9600. Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?
Hi All I have the TViX 5000U which means no end-to-end HDMI and no support for H.264. This is why I'm testing the Popcornhour at the moment. It's actually destined for a relative as a gift and I want to ensure it's stable. You all raise very valid points about both products and I'll try to address them. Keep in mind I'm streaming my content from an Infrant ReadyNAS across a wired network. Wirelss and HD content don't mix IMHO. TViX - I have had this for over a year and it has changed the way I watch TV. - I absolutely love it. - It's rock solid in its performance and delivers what it needs to. - Yes, the interface could be so much better (Apple is always wins this) but the breadth of formats supported make it a clear winner to me. Popcornhour === - This has a better user interface than the TViX but that's not saying much. - The feature list is staggering but I'm unlikely to use a fraction of them. - The whole HD thing works perfectly (up to 1080P) but I've not pushed this very hard yet. - Software still needs a few firmware releases to be completely stable. - For now I'm very impressed with this streamer and given the $200 price mark I'm in no position to complain. I'm in a position to give the TViX as a gift and keep the more feature-laden Popcornhour. It pains me but I'm keeping the TViX. -- Kaizen28 ---- Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40689 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not aware of anything that works in the same way that the SB runs today. I have both a TViX and a Popcornhour. My needs are HDMI 1080P and the ability to stream practically any format under the sun. None of these boxes are good when it comes to audio so I see them as pure video playback devices. I see them as beta release products which I'm used to. If you work within their parameters of operation though they are excellent. I highly recommend both of the devices I have! -- Kaizen28 ---- Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40689 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi The RadioShark looks superb but it just needs to work off my ReadyNAS running SlimServer. Pity, that's not there yet. I'll do some investigating into the IR Blaster option as I'm not sure how I'd get this to turn on the Nakamichi at a given time though. It's such a waste leaving it on in AUX mode. [slim] All-In-One Device - does it exist... is there a market
Hi All I hope you'll all forgive the ramblings of a caffeine-fueled individual I have been the prod owner of a Nakamichi SoundSpace 8 for about 7 years and while it has a substantial Wife Acceptance Factor and looks just beautiful floating on the bedroom wall, the fact is it simply isn't very good. I have reached a point where I would like to replace it but I'm really struggling to find anything suitable. Currently the SoundSpace connects to my SqueezeBox which I LOVE but interaction is somewhat limited with multiple remotes and the non-existent alarm function of the Nakamichi. I've pondered removing the Nakamichi entirely and having really pretty wall-mounted speakers with a hidden amp but Internet radio streams can be unreliable and quality is questionable. So, is there anything out there in a single elegant package that can stream media like my beloved Squeezebox, play radio stations (HD or otherwise) and possibly CDs too? I've not found anything and I guess there just isn't a market for an all-in-one device. Any thoughts are welcome! -- Kaizen28 ---- Kaizen28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5953 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35685 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
