Re: [slim] What's the correct way to set presets on SB3 please

2010-04-15 Thread Labarum

I have been offline for a few weeks having just moved to Cyprus. On
getting an ADSL connection and winding up my SB3 and Boom I noted
Squeezeserve 7.5 had been released. I installed it and upgraded
firmware on both boxes. Music is not streaming well but how far have we
got with the issue of Presets and Favourites? Most of the time I control
by laptop using Fvourites, but it would be nice to have Presets working.
They seem not to be.

What can anyone tell me?

Yes. Just a very basic box achieving the highest quality. Maybe a box

Yes, the iPlayer pluggin works outside UK. I use it every day in

BBC Radio will play outside UK from the iPlayer screen on a computer,
BBC TV is not available.

iPlayer TV is available outside UK if you use a VPN agent to make
iPlayer think you are in UK. I use

£5 per month.

I am watching BBC News as I type.

I guess Spotify could be made to work outside UK via VPN. I have not

I bought my SB3 to sidestep the problems of streaming via an XP box.

You can now get a small format PC running Windows 7 for the same price

[slim] AV Streaming Today

2010-10-24 Thread Labarum

A Logitech product that streamed both video and audio would be nice.

The new Apple TV will do this for a good price but with limitations set
by Apple's closed shop marketing strategy.

The Netgear Push2TV makes it possible

http://www.netgear.com/ptv

but does not have a S/PDIF output so audio needs to be routed by HDMI,
through the TV and on to the audio chain - not ideal.

A Logitech box that would compete with Netgears, but offered the better
audio routing would be attractive to me, and if it also had a screenless
Squeezebox functionality, so much the better.

Would I buy a Squeezebox today? Probably not. I could get better value
from an Acer Revo or similar small format PC bolted to the back of the
TV offering video up to HD and audio in many formats with an optical
link to a DAC.

Come on Logitech, you're a big firm. Where are the goodies for
tomorrow?

A £100 box to take on the Apple TV and the Push2TV.

Agreed.

Which is why Push2TV with an S/PDIF out that would still stream audio
to the DAC with the TV off would be good news. The Media Player runs on
the laptop and copies its video to the big screen when needed, and its
audio stream to the remote box for transfer to the HiFi when audio only
is needed.

I must look at Boxee's precise specs.

If I was using an Acer Revo or similar I would run it with the TV off
if no video was needed, and Remote Desktop from the laptop which is
always by me.

I suppose I could, but I have no AV Receiver and no use for one.

Adding another screen is unnecessary. I have a laptop as a source for
internet radio, ripped CDs and iPlayer content. I watch and listen to
nothing by satellite or terrestrial transmission in Cyprus. It's all

[slim] 19th Century Analalogue Streaming

2011-04-04 Thread Labarum

The British Rediffusion Radio Programme and later TV cable distribution
system I knew about, but I did not know that such systems are older
than radio itself. Many towns used telephone systems to route music,
entertainment and news into homes from the 1880s!

This Radio 3 broadcast tells the tale

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sbc1r/Sunday_Feature_The_Pleasure_Telephone/

My grandmother had one of these

[image: http://www.rediffusion.info/BroadcastRelayService/speaker.jpg]

http://www.rediffusion.info/BroadcastRelayService/

but in a beautiful brown Bakelite. Notice the channel selector and
volume control on the wall. They offered an attractive subscription
alternative to an expensive "Wireless Set".

As a teenager I liberated the speaker and used it for a few years.

The earlier London Telephone based system is described here

http://www.britishtelephones.com/electrophone.htm

[image:
http://www.britishtelephones.com/electrophone/electrophone%20receivers%20with%20stand.jpg]

but the programme makes clear that the Budapest network was the best,
offering a broad range of "Radio" programme output by wire.

The Radio 3 Programme is worth a listen.

Since my principal means to access TV is iPlayer I am stuck with it.

I can understand Apple' trying to sideline Flash, but that must

Re: [slim] Hi res audio?

2011-07-13 Thread Labarum

For playback the quality of the initial recording is much more important
than the definition of the media.

I have some very fine downloaded 24/96 recording from Gimmell

http://www.gimell.com/

but my best CDs at 16/44.1 are as good.

A rubbish recording will still sound rubbish if it's sold to you at
24/96 or even higher.

Don't leap to the conclusion that a high definition file must
necessarily sound better.

[slim] Netbook Flexibility

I am tempted to buy a SB Classic, get used to it using its dumb remote,
then buy a netbook to use as an armchair controller, emailer and

What is the internal sound like on these various netbooks? I could use
it with earphones as a travelling music box - I wouldn't walk around
the streets wired up, but it could be useful in a hotel room.

I guess I would get better quality with something a M-Audio Transit
attached, but in order to do that would I have to limit myself to an XP
machine?

Yes, Songbird should do for Squeezebox Hardware what iTunes does for
Mac Hardware.

It the longer term it would be nice if open source software would
manage whatever streaming hardware is put on the market.

Maximum choice and flexibility for the use should be the aim - open
standards for hardware and software.

[slim] Streaming and Open Standards

2008-10-31 Thread Labarum

I am drawn to the Squeezebox solution to computer audio for a number of
reasons, open source and open standards being among them.

As I understand it the only software that is not "free" is that
associated with the receiving hardware. That seems a reasonable
business model. Slim/Logitech have to have some income from the project
or there would be no hardware.

I do wonder if Loigitech will licence this hardware/software solution
so it may be incorporated into other manufactures solutions.

It would be nice to have an open standard for audio streaming - that
would facilitate development and enable users to attach whatever
hardware took their fancy to the same network.

At the moment Apple, Sonos and Logitech and Linn have different
standards, and as others jump into the market it will get even more
fragmented.

Have I understood the issues correctly?

Thanks for your prompt an official response.

I am just on very new and interested end user, so I won't be applying
for manufacturing licences. I do, however, see some sort of format
waras streaming becomes more common. It would be better for users and
manufacturers if such nonsense could be avoided. iTunes won't even play
or stream FLAC - what nonsense.

I just took delivery of my AB3 an hour ago. I have has Squeezecentre
installed for a while and have been getting used to it with
Softsqueeze. The hardware looks nicely made.

I look at the Transporter and its price (which I could afford), but do
I want to pay the premium, given that I have a competent DAC already?
Most music available is still 16/44 and looking to the future 24/96 may
not be good enough for the best classical downloads.

So I am find my way forward slowly.

Thanks for your time and interest

I love them.

Bartok Radio has a 320Kb/s stream, but "Staff Picks" links to the

[slim] New Products

2008-12-20 Thread Labarum

Logitech will be no different to other manufacturers: they don't
announce new products till they announce new products.

But rumours? Any rumours?

What would I want?

I am generally very happy with my SB3 playing into a Beresford DAC
directly driving an updated Quad 405-2, but would like to play the few
files I have that are higher resolution than 16/44.1, and I can see
some advantage in having the chip that receives the stream from the
network and the DAC chip in the same box.

Yes, a transporter will do this, even if 24/96 may now be looking
ungenerous. It will do it at a price and with some engineering I don't
want. I have a small laptop on the coffee table next to me in the
lounge, and the IR remote sits on the arm of the chair - reaching for
one or the other does all I want, and any fancy display in the SB is
just an unnecessary distraction.

What would I want? A high quality black plastic consumer box with a
display not much more complex than the SB3, abilty to process better
than 24/96, a DAC as least as good as my Beresford, extra switchable
digital inputs, and maybe even an analogue input, which would
necessitate a high quality analogue volume control - and all for £500.

Do I have a chance?

[slim] Number Assignment - Favourites

2009-09-25 Thread Labarum

I have just moved house and been offline a week. I had to reinstall
Squeezecentre - the latest 7.4 Nightly. All my Favourites are still
there and respond the the numbers assigned, but I cannot see the edit
boxes on the web interface.

Have I remembered correctly?

Clicking the edit pencil in Favourites should reveal an option to
reassign favourites - but I don't see it.

Am I looking in the wrong place, or is there a problem with nightly?

[slim] More gremlins

A after minute or more a station which claims to be playing will in the
end spring to life.

Any ideas?

47 seconds for an internet radio station to start sounding after I had
pressed 'Play'.

I have been using the 7.4 nightlies for weeks without andy problem,
those only started with the official release.

If these problems are not sorted quickly untold damage could be done to
the marketability of SBs to those who are not so computer literate.

The uses of a product like Squeezebox should not be expected to dig deep

[slim] Softsqueeze better than browser "Listen Now"?

2009-01-24 Thread Labarum

Am I imagining it?

I was listening to Classic FM using the "Listen Now" button on their
webpage. I closed that and opened Softsqueeze for Classic FM

I thought it better. Am I imagining it?

The study PC runs XP and Squeezecentre - the Squeezebox in in the
lounge on the HiFi. I have not used Softsqueeze since getting the SB3,
but just thought I would click it up. I have Foobar and Asio4all
installed and use those to listen to my FLACs.

Does Softsqeeze tame XP and the hardware better than the browser?

The soundcard is a straightforward Audigy, nothing special, it drives a
Quad 77 Amp and a pair of old Goodmans Maxims.

[slim] Boom versus SB3 & cheap acive speakers

2009-01-26 Thread Labarum

Has anyone made such a comparison?

The items I have in mind on the UK market have a wood, well particle
board, cabinets, and are £30 from Maplin

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=27962

Can others recommend other active speakers that would produce a system
about or below the price of a Boom? Music industry monitors, perhaps.
Most PC speakers are pretty poor.

At the very least the spaced speakers would offer advantage. In some
domestic circumstances the three box solution might be preferred for
all sorts of reasons.

Depends on the cost of the speakers, and if the £30 Maplin speakers
better the Boom output, I'm ahead. Best UK price for an SB3 seems here
at the moment

http://www.cooltopia.com/product.php/6/30

SB3 £130 Maplin Speakers £30 Boom £170

Portability might be a consideration, as noted higher up this thread.

I would be for a third station. I have in the study a Quad 77
Integrated Amp which drives a pair of Goodmans Maxims very nicely, and
takes input from an Audigy card on the PC. The study audio is awaiting
the addition of a Squeezebox when I move house and locate the server
somewhere else.

As I get older my high frequency hearing problems get worse and I am
less tolerant or whiring, whining and clicking.

I had noted your point, and I am at a disadvantage in not having heard
even a Boom.

It does have a plastic case, and I expect chucks out highly processed
sound which can be very convincing, as with the Bose radios.

Nor have I heard the Maplin speakers, but they do not have a plastic
case. Mind you, I have some cheap plastic case passive speakers. When I
got my Quad 405-2 from eBay, I tested it with these speakers rather than
risk damage to something more valuable. The sound was remarkable. But I
hvae read that a polite and powerful amp can hold cheap speakers in
such a vice like grip that they cannot mis-behave!

The answer, of course is to take the likes of an iPod to the shop and
have a listen.

What does the Boom weigh?

I would take one to Cyprus by air in my luggage if it was not too

[slim] Internet Radio Sampling

2009-01-30 Thread Labarum

Step one. I ripped a lot of my CDs to FLAC and realised that was the way
forward.

Step two. I bought a decent but inexpensive DAC (a Beresford)

Step three. I bought a SB3 to get rid of the noisy Shuttle PC frot the
lounge and to sidestep re sampling and other sound card issues.

BUT if find I spend far more time listening to Classical Internet
Radio. Radio Bartok at 320Kb/s is very nice, but Classic FM at 128,
Radio 3 at 128 and a few others are very pleasant to listen to and
generally better than my Quad FM Tuner.

The FLAC are clearer and cleaner, but I do enjoy the pot-luck of radio,
and wth so many classical channels to choose from if something comes on
air not to my taste of my mood I just flip channels.

Now to the point. A lot is may of the bitrate/quality issue, but what
is the sampling rate used in the transmissions? If the majority of
output is from CD and the transmission is not at that rate we are back
in the resampling quagmire - but I guess with compressed formats, there
is less to be lost.

So what sampling frequency is used, and what are the losses involved?

But I still enjoy the streamed radio stations.

[slim] OGG streams crashing SB3, SC, or XP

2009-02-05 Thread Labarum

I have just been recommended some HiBit Classical music streams here

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=393002#post393002

Trying to tune the OGG streams crashed either SB3 or SC after 10 or 20
seconds play.

Needed to unplug and restart SB3, stop and restart SC or reboot PC (or
two of the three)

Any ideas?

I will try the latest 7.4 beta, been intending to do that anyway.

Is there an auto update? Or at least a way of receiving notifications,
rather than having to look periodically.

I will report on last night's 7.4.

My thread, so I claim the right to deviate.

SC seems to allow children to the favourites folder, but I have not
explored it. Is it possible to assign a second set of press and hold
favourites on the SB3 IR remote? I use the long press numbers for my
radio stations, but with these new OGGs I will run out of buttons.

Those HD-600s? Worth having? I have been looking at them. How do they
stack up against the best in ear phones?

A new Beresford DAC is about to come out with a much better phone amp
in it that is said to drive the HD-600s very well.

Imaging? I get ribbed about my 20 year old Quarts - Titanaiun tweeters
and aluminium mid-rangers the size of tennis balls - but they are pin
point accurate. They need "polite" amplification - hence the Quad 405.

Beresford site

http://www.beresford.me/main/main.html

In UK an SB3 can be had for £130 and a Beresford 7510 for about the
same. It provides a serious improvement over the stand alone SB3 for a
lot less than a Transporter and many Squeezebox users both sides of the
Atlantic use the DAC.

It has four switchable inputs and both a fixed and variable analogue
out, so will double as a digital control amp. The new 7520 has a USB
input as well as S/PDIF and better analogue outputs (they say) for
driving power amp or phones. That will be selling at about £200.

Perhaps the development team should have one to see what the fuss is
about?
