[slim] what ever happened to the bug-tracker?

Re: [slim] Internet speed and wireless network
this is a long shot, but ya never know... It *could* possibly be DNS issues. A similar symptom happened to me a long time ago (FreeBSD), when my cable-modem provider was having all sorts of trouble. I've never touched a mac, but you might try looking into setting up your own local DNS, at least so that your server doesn't try and hit your ISP's DNS server to lookup host-names for your 192.168.2.* addresses on your LAN. Under 'bsd, it was just a matter of setting up /etc/hosts with a whole buncha entries for my network: -- ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1localhost 192.168.1.1 router 192.168.1.2 server 192.168.1.3 dot3 192.168.1.4 dot4 192.168.1.5 dot5 ... 192.168.1.255 dot255 -- And also making sure that my /etc/host.conf file looked like: -- hosts bind -- This tells the OS to first try resolving hostnames from the local hosts file first, and THEN to consult bind (which would try to get the info from a DNS server on the internet, typically whatever your cable-modem tells it to). Probably not much help, though OSX is derived from 'bsd. Might give you something to go on, anyways. Solely in the interest of providing another data-point, this "bug" doesn't actually bother me... ;-) I'm seeing the same thing here -- I'd say it's more like about a third to a half of a second difference. Slimserver is 6.02, running on a AMD 1.2ghz duron, 256mb ram, load average is 0.02,0.03,0.00 (ie, exceedingly not busy). Connected to 100mbps switch in my office via about 5 feet of cat5 ethernet. Squeezebox2 connected to same 100mbps switch in my office, via about 150 feet of cat5 ethernet. Softsqueeze running on my winxp desktop (up-to-date java), connected to same switch via about 5 feet of cat5 ethernet. (Solution: only play "live" music, and pretend it's just an echo) I tried synching both ways (synch the squeezebox with the softsqueeze, and vice versa), but it didn't make any difference. -- Maditude ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] integrating FM radio...
(I searched for this, but of course the silly search feature kindly informs me that "FM" is too short or too common to be used, bah!) Since the squeezebox doesn't have a built-in FM tuner (a shame, if you ask me), I'm wondering if anyone has figured out how to integrate a radio tuner-card on the computer running SlimServer and stream that to the squeezebox device, such that one could select the radio station, etc, all from the squeezebox remote. -- Maditude ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For me, it's too expensive, considering it won't be "open" (ie, I can't install anything I like on it, like say courier-imap, apache, etc). While it's pretty cool that you persuaded your company to make it run SlimServer, is your company going to keep current with the SlimServer software? -- Maditude ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I wouldn't want the squeezebox's power button to turn OFF my slimserver box, but slimserver is aware of the squeezebox's power status -- you could probably watch for that change in a script on your server, and perform a shutdown at that point. -- Maditude ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I can't say if that's a problem specific to SQLite on WinXP but I've got two observations: 1) Dude, you've got 1 GB of RAM, and an operating system with a decent memory manager. You can't possibly be swapping just because one process is eating 170 MB. What does task-manager say is the available memory? 2) Earlier, you mentioned having 28000 songs. That is 8 times as many songs in my collection. My slimserver process (on FreeBSD) is using 34 MB. So proportionately, you're using less RAM per song than I am. [apples to oranges, I know, especially with the different platforms...] If your winXP box has become annoyingly slow since you started running the slimserver software, I'd suggest building (or buying an old used) box just for running the software. I've seen quite a few posts here about people running the slimserver software on some VERY modest hardware. -- Maditude ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
