[slim] what ever happened to the bug-tracker?

2008-04-29 Thread Maditude

Haven't been here in ages, and I got to thinking to myself, I wonder if
I should update my old 6.3 SlimServer (running on an old freebsd 5.5).
Looks like there's been lotsa changes! Anyways, is the old bug tracker
still around? I thought I'd check on a couple of old issues that I was
interested in, but I can't seem to find it.

Re: [slim] Internet speed and wireless network

2007-04-04 Thread Maditude

this is a long shot, but ya never know...

It *could* possibly be DNS issues. A similar symptom happened to me a
long time ago (FreeBSD), when my cable-modem provider was having all
sorts of trouble.

I've never touched a mac, but you might try looking into setting up
your own local DNS, at least so that your server doesn't try and hit
your ISP's DNS server to lookup host-names for your 192.168.2.*
addresses on your LAN.

Under 'bsd, it was just a matter of setting up /etc/hosts with a whole
buncha entries for my network:

--
::1  localhost
127.0.0.1localhost
192.168.1.1 router
192.168.1.2 server
192.168.1.3 dot3
192.168.1.4 dot4
192.168.1.5 dot5
...
192.168.1.255 dot255
--

And also making sure that my /etc/host.conf file looked like:
--
hosts
bind
--

This tells the OS to first try resolving hostnames from the local hosts
file first, and THEN to consult bind (which would try to get the info
from a DNS server on the internet, typically whatever your cable-modem
tells it to).

Probably not much help, though OSX is derived from 'bsd. Might give
you something to go on, anyways. Good luck!

[slim] 6.5 and Random Mix

I just installed 6.5 on a Win2k box, and have so far found only one bug

Anyone else see this? There any work-arounds?

Your music library contains 539 albums with 5320 songs by 303 artists.

SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - freebsd - EN - iso-8859-1
Hardware: Athlon 1.5 GHz cpu, 512 MB RAM, lotsa disk.
OS: FreeBSD 5.4-stable, running apache, mail/courier-imap, samba,
slimserver, and lots of other goofy code I write myself.

2 wired SB2's, 1 wireless. Likely buying a (wired) SB3 this summer.

It's my impression that SlimServer doesn't handle playlists optimally
-- it's no problem for around 100 songs or so, but after that, it
rapidly starts to bog down. Most I've ever put into a playlist (via
the webinterface) was about 200 tracks, before it got so unresponsive
that I decided that was enough music to last for a while. :-)

Never heard of that one... If you can find an sqlite (version 3)
package for your OS, install that. Once you've done so, here's a
script to retrieve a simple list of artist/album/song-title/genre:

.mode html
select c.name, a.title, t.title, g.name
from albums a, tracks t, genres g, genre_track gt, contributors c
where t.age > 0
and a.id = t.album
and g.id = gt.genre
and t.id = gt.track
and c.id = a.contributor
order by 1,2;

(I'm actually building this query in a shell-script, and using the
'age' column a bit differently, but if you want everything, the above
works)

With the .mode option, you can specify: csv, column, html, insert,
line, list, tabs, tcl.

Hmmm, just noticed that you're using WinAmp at work. I don't know if
that will show up as a "player" in the slimserver web interface. You
might want to give SoftSqueeze a shot. (Less clunky, imho, than trying
to use the webinterface to choose what songs to play, with the added
bonus of getting you used to the remote-control).

At any rate, you don't want to change your bit-rate settings for your
hardware squeezebox, as that will just make it unnecessarily degrade
the audio.

It's a limitation of your upstream bandwidth, and the fact that OGG is
decoded on the server and streamed, rather than being decoded on the
squeezebox!

Luckily, it's easily remedied:

Open a browser to your slimserver, select your player, and in the
player-settings, click the audio link. Towards the bottom, there's a
bit-rate limiting option. If chosen, and you have LAME installed,
it'll convert the OGG to MP3 and stream that (at the desired bit-rate).

I've noticed it never quite works with a wired and a wireless (both

Just upgraded from 6.1.1, to 6.2.1 today to see if it was any better,

are in a spot where you can hear both. Letting it go for a couple of

Is there some sort of trick to this? I got it all working without too
much trouble (WPA) and the wireless squeezebox was sounding and looking
great.

Then, my daughter turned on her computer, and complained that she
couldn't connect to the internet. After a little investigation, I
notice that 192.168.1.1 (which should be my WIRED lan's router IP
address) was now showing up with the name of the wifi router.

Looking at my 'bsd boxes logs, it seems there was a fight between my
wired router and wifi router... (arp: 192.168.1.1 moved from MAC#1 to
MAC#2 and back). I didn't try changing the wifi router's network,
didn't see any obvious place to do so, but since the WAN port wasn't
plugged into anything, it shouldn't have been an issue. right?

The new wifi router is a LinkSys WRTG54, and I would just replace my
regular router (LinkSys BFRS11 or sumthin' like that), but the wireless
signal isn't traveling very well between the basement and the kitchen
upstairs.

[slim] wired / wireless lan

2005-10-02 Thread Maditude

I've got a wired lan, that covers MOST of the entire house (two floors,
plus basement).

Anyway, my wife wants to put a squeezebox in the kitchen, where running
ethernet is a pretty much impossible.

I've got a wireless sb2 on order, but am wondering if I should get a
wireless access point, or a wireless router, to hook everything up to
the old (wired) LAN. From what I've seen, the routers tend to be a bit
cheaper, though it's not a huge difference.

Is there a recommended way to go?

TIA,

I was messing about in the fishbone skin, and managed to set one of my

Do these settings actually do anything? The player still plays, though

Did you try power-cycling the SB2? I've had mine lock up on me once,
when I got carried away with the fast-forward button, and in an attempt
to make it stop fast-forwarding, hit the reverse button.

Have you tried anything else? Like plug it into a wired connection?
Does softsqueeze work? (The 6.02 software has a link to it at
http://localhost:9000/html/softsqueeze/applet.html. Or if you've got
winamp, you can try connecting to the URL
http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 and see if that works...

(replace localhost in those urls with the appropriate address of your
slim server)

Nope. You're connected, but you need to speak (well, type) in the
proper dialect of slimserver command-line-interface. ;-)

Point your webbrowser at your slimserver config (presumably
http://localhost:9000, then at the bottom of the page, you'll see a
"Help" section, choose the "Technical Information" section. Next
choose the "Slim Server Command Line Interface", for a lengthy
discussion of how the CLI works.

That doesn't make any sense.

open up a console window (aka "dos window").
type this command:
telnet localhost 9090

it'll look like nothing's happening, but as long as you don't get a
response back like "connection refused", that means it's connected. If
you're using the windows telnet client, hit Ctrl+] followed by quit to
close the session.

[slim] old slimp3 -- still work?

2005-06-15 Thread Maditude

I already own two squeezebox2 devices -- *very* happy with them, but was
wondering about scrounging up a super-cheap model for outdoor use. All
my music is mp3, and I don't have any plans to switch to FLAC or
anything like that anyways, is there any reason to NOT pick up an old
slimp3, assuming the price is right (ebay)? I've read that synching
between different versions of the device is hit or miss, but I don't
expect that I'll be doing that anyways.

Last I checked, the 'bsd port for slimserver was pretty old. If you
decide to go with the new version from just a plain old tarball, note
that you will need Perl 5.8.6 (installs from ports easily enough), drop
me a note if you have any problems.

Look into the 'srvany' (google) utility to do what you want. I've used
it at work, I can dig up some sample scripts I've used with it next
Monday if you're stuck.

But, really, you should figure out what's causing the crash, and
rectify that before trying to automate a restart. Any error messages?

[slim] Re: softsqueeze sync problem

2005-05-30 Thread Maditude

Solely in the interest of providing another data-point, this "bug"
doesn't actually bother me... ;-)

I'm seeing the same thing here -- I'd say it's more like about a third
to a half of a second difference. Slimserver is 6.02, running on a AMD
1.2ghz duron, 256mb ram, load average is 0.02,0.03,0.00 (ie, exceedingly
not busy). Connected to 100mbps switch in my office via about 5 feet of
cat5 ethernet.

Squeezebox2 connected to same 100mbps switch in my office, via about
150 feet of cat5 ethernet.

Softsqueeze running on my winxp desktop (up-to-date java), connected to
same switch via about 5 feet of cat5 ethernet.

(Solution: only play "live" music, and pretend it's just an echo)

I tried synching both ways (synch the squeezebox with the softsqueeze,
and vice versa), but it didn't make any difference.

[slim] integrating FM radio...

2005-05-28 Thread Maditude

(I searched for this, but of course the silly search feature kindly
informs me that "FM" is too short or too common to be used, bah!)

Since the squeezebox doesn't have a built-in FM tuner (a shame, if you
ask me), I'm wondering if anyone has figured out how to integrate a
radio tuner-card on the computer running SlimServer and stream that to
the squeezebox device, such that one could select the radio station,
etc, all from the squeezebox remote.

For me, it's too expensive, considering it won't be "open" (ie, I can't
install anything I like on it, like say courier-imap, apache, etc).

While it's pretty cool that you persuaded your company to make it run
SlimServer, is your company going to keep current with the SlimServer
software?

I think this would be pretty useful -- if the Squeezebox can't connect
to the SlimServer, it could try sending a WakeOnLan packet, and display
a message to the effect of "the server should be booting now, this'll
take a bit...".

I wouldn't want the squeezebox's power button to turn OFF my slimserver
box, but slimserver is aware of the squeezebox's power status -- you
could probably watch for that change in a script on your server, and
perform a shutdown at that point.

I can't say if that's a problem specific to SQLite on WinXP but I've
got two observations:

1) Dude, you've got 1 GB of RAM, and an operating system with a decent
memory manager. You can't possibly be swapping just because one
process is eating 170 MB. What does task-manager say is the available
memory?

2) Earlier, you mentioned having 28000 songs. That is 8 times as many
songs in my collection. My slimserver process (on FreeBSD) is using 34
MB. So proportionately, you're using less RAM per song than I am.
[apples to oranges, I know, especially with the different
platforms...]

If your winXP box has become annoyingly slow since you started running
the slimserver software, I'd suggest building (or buying an old used)
box just for running the software. I've seen quite a few posts here
about people running the slimserver software on some VERY modest
hardware.
