[slim] Slim Running as Odd User

2006-11-22 Thread Michael Haan
I suspect this is an easy one. I've finally gotten a version of slimserver to
run off the shelf (6.5.1), however, it won't play music. It's giving me a
permissions error. The music files are owned by slimserver:slimserver as is
slimserver.pl. But, ps -ef | grep slim shows the processes running as user
501. How do I fix this?

What the H? what does the log say? I bet it's informative. Just guessing here, you're probably on Windows and trying to run it as a service and trying to reach out to a network share of the music, and in the upgrade you lost the authentication information. Or it could be that you're on Mac and the Mac is in that really insanely great state where it doesn't talk to wireless any more... or I don't know, maybe the underwear gnomes stole your music and have sold it for a plastic bottle of cheap whiskey. The log file won't tell you about the last problem, but it might give you some hints about the first two. -- "I spent all me tin with the ladies drinking gin, So across the Western ocean I must wander" -- traditional ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discussCall friends with PC-to-PC calling -- FREE Connect now!

[slim] New 6.5.1b Install - Want to Use Existing MySql Install

2006-08-26 Thread Michael Haan
So, that's pretty much it. Installed 6.5.1b on an FC5 box with an existing
MySql install. When I try to run slimserver I get:

# ./slimserver.pl
2006-08-26 14:36:11.3383 ERROR: MySQLHelper: startServer() Couldn't find a
executable for 'mysqld'! This is a fatal error. Exiting.

However:

# ps -ef | grep mysqld
root 2344 1 0 Aug24 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/mysqld_safe
--defaults-file=/etc/my.cnf --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
--log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
mysql 2380 2344 0 Aug24 ?00:00:00 /usr/libexec/mysqld
--defaults-file=/etc/my.cnf --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql
--user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-locking
--socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

So, the question is, how do I get slim to use my existing, running instance of
MySql?

Here what I did to get it working:

Clean-out 6.5 by manually deleting everything.
Install 6.3 from RPM.
Create a symbolic link /usr/local/slimerserver pointing to
/usr/local/SlimServer_v2006-05-06

Verify it works.
Delete /usr/local/SlimServer_v2006-05-06
Install 6.5 using tar -xzvf SlimServer_v2006-05-06.tar.gz in /usr/local

I've asked three different ways, but no one is responding anymore. I NEED
to clear out my slimserver install and install something that works because,
otherwise, my entire setup is USELESS. Someone at Slim, please respond to
me - I've bought six of your devices and, while that pales compared to some,
it represents significant money to me. I want to:

a) Cleanse my system of all things slimserver
b) Install a version that will work for me on FC5

RE: [slim] AM I INVISIBLE?

Yes, that's true. I signed-up with this forum before I had gmail. I know
that hotmail does annoying things, so I've taken to removing previous posts
- as I did with this one. That said:

1) Yes, it is linux, FC5 to be exact.
2) I installed the tarball over the rpm, but the rpm installs (I think)
additional files like start-up scripts.
3) I've actually posted on this particular issue under three different
threads.
4) All that said, I was mostly suprised because this forum has always been
very helpful before, despite my e-mail handicap.

So, what's best? Continue under this cover, or try and switch my account to
use gmail?

rm -rf /usr/local/slimserver
rm /etc/slimserver.conf
rm /tmp/slimserver.log
rm /etc/sysconfig/slimserver (I think)
rm /etc/init.d/slimserver

at that point, you'd still have the rpm noted in the rpm database, but
should have nothing left of slimserver

Ok, I did more than that, but at least inclusive. I'm going to try and
install the latestest nightly RPM of either 6.3 or 6.5. Will report.

The Nokia770 skin uses Ajax for the now playing page, and that skin is
only included with SlimServer 6.5 builds. The Nokia does not provide any

6.2 and 6.5 was used as a baseline for the new Nokia770 but is not
optimised for pda displays, does not have even one line of ajax, and is
not actively maintained (basic fixes to keep it from being totally
useless, when time permits).

Re: [slim] Re: Nokia 770 Skin

because the PocketPC platform sucks so bad(*) that it makes Palm look good -- but in switching to it, people spent time going over all the things that they didn't like about PalmOS and hoped PPC would fix, so they don't go back to Palm either. Instead they buy a Blackberry or a Symbian or a Motorola phone, or walk away from the whole PDA mess and carry a moleskin notebook. As a dedicated remote control, something like a PocketPC would have to be stable, fast, and untethered. I've never changed the two AAA batteries in a Slim Devices remote. A PocketPC would have to be put in the cradle every night.
Fair enough - so, how does the 770 stack-up against a PPC for power consumption, and for response time?

My second question was asking if when pushing music SB2(1), will it go all the way to the router and then back via 802.11G, or will it just hit the crossover?

RE: [slim] OT: Power line network adaptors (was: Okay, maybe it's time to call it a day...)

I've seen quite a few messages on this apologies for not having read them
all. I've been using powerline to haul traffic between floors of my three

interoperability doesn't seem to be a problem as I have a mix of belkin and

I'm interested in learning a bit more about these power line adaptors...
They would seem to be a pretty much perfect solution for transferring
large files to/from my fileserver. I really don't want to have cables
all over the house which is why I opted for wireless. But wireless is
painfully slow at transferring large amounts of data :( I could totally
do with a backup network that I can plug into (no pun intended) to
transfer videos from laptop to server and vice versa.

So how do these things work then? If I had an adaptor out where the
fileserver is, and an adaptor in the lounge somewhere, do they come with
any sort of built-in configuration? Or does it effectively open a
straight through channel (like a crossover cable, or something)?

Like - I could connect a hub/switch out where my fileserver is, connect
it to the power line adaptor in uplink mode? And same in the lounge?
Do I actually need hubs/switches (given that I already have a wireless
router access point?

(I should be able to work all this out, but I can't quite visualise it
;)

Anyone having problems with wireless and can't run ethernet might want
to try a set of powerline network adapters. They cost about $110 a
pair, use the existing electric wires in your walls, and are very
reliable. Zero configuration - plug 'em in and they work. Netgear,
Belkin, and others make them. I have Netgear and they work beautifully.

power company transformer. This is not true in Canada, and I expect not in the US either. In Canada, houses are supplied with symmettric 3 wire (plus ground)220-240V. That is, 3 wires come into the house, a Neutral (not ground),and 2 other wires that are 180° out of phase. 110-120V to the outlets isdeveloped in half the house between Neutral and one phase, and in theother half of the house between Neutral and the other phase. So youcannot count on the two outlets you chose being in parallel. They maybe on opposite sides of the transformer winding out on the street.I think the same is true in the US, although, frankly, when visitingthe US I don't normally poke my head in other people's electricalentranceways, so I can't be sure. :-)FWIW, Canadian factories are
supplied with 600V 3 phase, (which is anice submultiple of a standard transmission voltage) and americanfactories (for some reason I can't figure out) are 440V 3 phase. As I mentioned in an earlier post on this thread, I had previously started work on a slimserverfat client for the pocket pc using the .NET Compact Framework (what Telcanto uses), but had stopped because the CLI was missing something I needed. I've been informed that there is no longer anything missing from the CLI, so I started-up development again last night. With all the stuff the developers on this list have written in
the way of plug-ins and apps I'm surprised there isn't something
free out there that is similar to this.

My question is this...Since my music server is used only for
my Squeezebox1 G and a SLIMP3 (at least for now,) is there any
advantage to purchasing the TelCanto Server and Pocket PC Client
($60) instead of just the TelCanto For SlimServer ($50)?

It just so happens that I'm about to get one of those Dell

haven't installed it yet.)I would love to get something like
this if I can convince myself it's worth the money.

Re: [slim] Platinum SB2's??

How about an estimate of when we could expect them. I currently don't have even a ballpark guess as to when my order will be filled. Also, for those (like myself) who have a mixed black/platinum order, will it be partially filled, or all at once?

Re: [slim] Linux command-line tagger

I don't remember the exact command, but something like id3v2 -l 11_*.flac came back:
11_Frogs.flac
No tags found
Or something like that. Most of these files (they're all flac) were ripped/tagged with dbPowerAMP and slimserver seems to be able to pull them out. So i just figured this tool (id3v2) was having issues reading them.

id3v2 works perfectly for me - what do you mean by not reading the

It does for me - were your mp3's tagged with ape? I don't believe it
understands ape tags - but it should work fine with existing ID3V1 or
ID3V2 tags.

RE: [slim] abcde usage (with flac)

2005-03-17 Thread Michael Haan

I just started using abcde to rip to flac last night. It seemed a little slow, but given everything that was going on on the box, and the processes nice level, I wasn't surprised. Anyway, I haven't yet figured out exactly how to configure abcde the way I want just yet. On the single file per cd issue, I'm with you. I have my entire collection in flac and would never even thing of ripping cds to a single file with cue sheets - seems unnatural.

Subject: [slim] abcde usage (with flac)

Debian Sid SB1 owner.Yet another "best way to rip" question.

I normally use grip to rip to ogg.But listening to people here makes
me think I should go out and get a few honkin' drives, a dvd burner,
and rip to flac.I already have a number of title ripped to flac, but
mostly ogg and some mp3.

I have a few flac questions, and then also looking for tips on using
abcde.

And, yes, I did see Michael Peters scripts today.Looks like more
work -- and I don't mind the cddb errors. But I should look at them
again.

About flac -- I thought I saw a post where someone was suggesting
ripping CDs as a *single* flac.Is there a reason to do this?If so,
how are the songs managed individually? Can Slimserver play
individual songs in this case?

I also see talk of using cue/toc sheets. Will slimserver use those
for indexing songs -- and can then the songs be played individually?

I also noticed with the flac files I've played on my SB1 that the
audio level seems low.Is --replay-gain something that could help?

Now, if you use abcde, could you give some tips on your usage? What do
you set in your ~/.abcde.conf file, and what command line parameters
do you use?

I tried this:

 abcde -1 -a tag,playlist -o flac -R -w comment 1-3

hoping to get a single file with the first three songs, but it ripped
and encoded the entire cd.

$ ls -l

-rw-r--r--1 moseley moseley 438092326 2005-03-16 17:49 track01.flac

which doesn't seem to helpful. I guess I kind of want a single command to rip
and encode and store it in my music collection in some reasonable
order.I suppose artist/album/ makes sense (if I can determine the
one artist).

BTW -- also saw a post where they said EAC was better at ripping that
cdrdao/cdparanoia.Is that true?If so, why?

Thanks,

I have a squeezebox I and am running the new slimserver 6.0b1 software.I'm
having a problem with the Handheld skin/interface used on Internet Explorer via
a Dell Axim x30 (PocketPC).Basically the browser works (ie you can switch from
home to status to playlist, etc.), but when you click on one of the play or add
to playlist icons (if you "browse artists" from "home", these are the two icons
that form the right two columns), the browser refreshes to the status page but
does not start the new selection playing or add it to the playlist.

Interestingly if I open the fishbone interface in the handheld browser, the
icons work.

Any thoughts?I tried rebooting the handheld.

Thanks!

I'm not oppsed to additional work, especially if it reduces errors and can be somewhat scripted. So, your method adds a manual step for naming the files, otherwise using cdparanoia and flac? That's not so bad. I still need to look at jack and compare it to abcde and your method, but would you mind sending along those scripts that you mentioned? Thanks.

[slim] Song Display Name

2005-03-15 Thread Michael Haan

Ok, I've upgraded to 6.0. Pre 6.0, I would sometimes come across inconsistencies in artist names, or album names (and vs , or In vs in) and I would fix it by editting the tag and rescanning. My question - now, with 6.0 being DB based, how do I go about fixing inconsistencies like this?

Sorry if I missed something in this thread, but what's the down side
of ogg-pcm on the server?Bandwidth to the SB?I suspect that
might be the issue for higher bitrates.(Yes, I'm not an audio
  engineer.)

When you use mp3 or ogg, you have a range of bitrates you can do... when
you send pcm, you're sending raw data that is usually an order of
magnitude larger. So bandwidth usage is much higher.

I have quite a bit to learn.I just got my SB1 and and for some
reason I thought my ogg were going to get encoded to mp3 by the
  server -- I guess I saw the "ogg mp3 * *" entry in convert.conf.But
it seems they are sent pcm (correct?) as I don't see lame running.

It'll do either, depending on your settings... you can either send pcm
or mp3, and with mp3, you can do a range of bitrates.

And with all the talk of the better DAC on SB2, does that even come
into play if I (someday) use the S/PDIF or optical output?

I think the answer is a great big "it depends", but I'm a Linux geek,
not an audio geek, so I'll leave this part to someone else.

I hope the answers are not too far over my head. ;)

Be brave. :)

Things will (more or less) look and operate the same to the end user except once 6.0 becomes more mature you should see speedier performance, a smaller memory footprint, and more features. There'll still be a rescan button.

It depends on your data source.ID3 tags, itunes, moodlogic, musicmagic,
playlists, cue sheets, and even filenames can all be sources for the db.It
depends on how you have made your collection.

if you do not use itunes, musicmagic or moodlogic, then forget about them.

if you have old playlists, that could be it.

if you have cue sheets, fix them.

if you have ID3 tags, get your favourite editor out.

if you have vacant tags, then look at the filenames because the guessTags
settings will use the filenames to guess what the data should be.

su -c 'perl -MCPAN -e "install Compress::Zlib"'?
Finally, any special build flags I need - maybe -march=k8?

Quoting Michael Haan [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  I tried that, and got:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] slimserver # ./slimserver.pl
  Can't locate auto/Compress/Zlib/autosplit.ix in @INC (@INC contains:

Unfortunately this kind of thing is all too common right now. Many of the new
features of slimserver6.0 required the use of binary Perl modules.Dan is
working to include these for as many platforms as possible, but its not a
complete list yet (with hundreds of possibilities to keep up with).

If you have access to subversion, Dan has placed all the required modules here:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/vendor/src(i think that's the right url)

or you can get via viewcvs:
http://cvs.slimdevices.com/vendor/src/?rev=2421

you can then compile them for your system.

su -c 'perl -MCPAN -e "install Compress::Zlib"' should work for this particular
problem

I get most of mine from the last method, so I'm afraid I'm not able to give much
more detail on the compiling.I'll have to leave that to Dan.

And this will work fine on an AMD64 (do I change the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to "~amd64")?

Hi Michael,
there is an ebuild available of 5.4.0 at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73832

I have written up the steps I took to get this up and
running on my Gentoo'd Kurobox here
http://www.revogear.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=360

I am looking at 6.0 now and hope to have a usable
installation soon.I may even be able to update the
ebuild, but that is not a promise (I still have heaps
to learn about ebuilds and the portage tree).

If you get there first keep us informed of the steps
you needed to take to get it working.

Pete

Subject: [slim] A question about the SB2 and one
about 6.0

#1)What is the current expected wait time for
delivery of a new SB2?

#2) I already have two SBGs and want to install 6.0
on my gentoo box.I'm assuming it's best to use the
source install, but I'm sure there must be some
additional steps I need to take (put slimserver.conf
here, add something to /etc/init.d, set up the mysql
db, etc.) - can someone tell me what those steps
are?Bonus points if they're gentoo specific.

Re: [slim] US Supreme Court

Because it gets right to the question of whether or not technology can legally exist for making copies of copyrighted material.

I find this interesting, and while I'm not sure where I stand with respect
to this case (I don't know enough about it) I don't understand what
financial/business interest Slim Devices has in this case.I'm no lawyer
and may be a bit dense about these types of things, but it seems as though
the case is about peer-to-peer file sharing--not DRM (which I could
understand having a direct impact on Slim's business).Could someone
enlighten me as to why Slim has such an interest in this? What's the big
picture here that I'm missing?
