[slim] Late night server hangs = ruins party :(
Ok guys, you know how it is. Its late at night, you're having a great party. You're wrecked but still want more music. You spin down the menu of artists but in your drunken state you select play instead of going into the artist folder and selecting an album. SB then tries to buffer up the entire artist folder which might contain 50 or more albums. SB then hangs unresponsive and you're left with no music. I've found the only solution is to restart the PC which frankly ruins the moment. This has happened to me on and off for the last 6 years ever since I got my SB2. Now I have just updated server to the latest but is there anything else I can do? SQ should not lock you out, it should allow you do select something else if you mistakenly selected to play an entire massive folder. Any tips appreciated. -- Orb Orb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=111 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90756 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Late night server hangs = ruins party :(
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have lowered the playlist to 250 so I'll see if that makes a difference. I've also noticed before that the same thing happens on some WAV files. Most of my stuff is mp3 but there are a few WAVS. Computer is a windows box running vista. It is in its final days but I'd like to get another 6 months or so out of it. These problems only ever occur when I'm in party mode and least capable of dealing with technical trouble but that is always when I get an issue. Regarding folders. I organise my music in folders. So Drive Z is for music only. Then a create a folder for each artist. Within that Another folder for each album and its songs. I much prefer to access my music this way. I've never found tags to work so well as this. -- Orb Orb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=111 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90756 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Just got broadband, Squeeze box's not working anymore?
Hello, I've just got broadband after waiting for 3 years for it. However, it's wireless broadband as I'm in a rural area. I have two SB2's which were working fine. The broadband guy installed today now slim server cannot see the SB's. Before I contact the broadband people I thought I better check here first. One thing it might have something to do with is I was told that a port or something has been closed which stops file sharing p2p software from working, which they do to control bandwidth on their network. Could this be something to do with my problem? I could understand if the SB was trying to access the net but all they do is play music from my hard drive. [slim] If your SB breaks, you're stuffed!
I got my first SB2 April 2005 direct from Slim Devices. As I live in Ireland and there are no dealers here I had no choice. Anyway, being so in love with this little gadget, earlier this year I picked up another SB2 from ebay for just over a £100. Money was tight and I could not stretch to a new SB3. When the 2nd hand SB2 turned up it was dead. After a little reseach I found the CPU had come loose, I fixed it within a few minutes and it was working fine. Anyway, 4 or 5 months later it just died. I tried everything, contacted Slim and they said it needed to come back for repair. As It was 2nd hand I had to pay for the repair. Long story short = the cost of the repair + the postage back to sunny California from rainy Ireland worked out more than I paid for the thing to start with. It's a shame I cannot send it somewhere in Ireland/UK for fixing. I feel pretty fed up about the situation. I cannot afford to get the thing fixed and £100 for 4 months use isn't a great investment. I've a few things that annoy me about my SB2's so I thought I'd post them and see if solutions are available. 1. even if my computer has been on, the first time I turn on my SB2 it takes about a minute before you can do anything. It just seems to sit there locked up. I thought it might have been my hard drive as it was rather old so I replaced it, still the same slow start. Once SB gets going its fine. 2. I find the forward reverse through a track absolutely unusable on my SB2. Sometimes I might want to just skip to a section of a track but I have concluded it cannot be done on the SB2. In most cases it will crash the SB. 3. I notice that syncing up my two SB2's or soft squeeze is not that accurate and there is quite often out of sync syncing going on. [slim] Re: no more SB2 in the UK?
Well, I see SB2 going for around £130 and SB3 going for around £180. £50 for a new design. The psu/antenna improvements mean nothing to me and certainly not £50. I take your point about the SB2 looking like an alarm clock but my point is, why introduce a product that is extremely popular and within less than a year completely change its look and stop manufacturing the old design? I find it an odd decision. It must cost a lot of investment to do this and I could understand it if the SB3 was a major hardware improvement on the SB2 but as it stands it isn't. My comment about exploitation may have been rather harsh but judging from many people around here who will buy anything SD put out, it seems to me SD knew this. I just find it odd thats all. I wouldn't have expected the SB3 to be out until next year, maybe late summer fall next year. I would have thought the SB3 would be massively upgraded from the SB2. I guess this is now the domain of the SB4. I still stand by my comment about distribution and will do until I can buy a SB from somewhere like Amazon. SB is an amazing product but most people have never heard of it. Shit, just about every one for sale on ebay comes with the selling point 'rare item'. And you'd feel my frustration if you have been trying to buy a SB2 for the last month only to be told, we don't ship here, we don't ship there, we will ship to you but the shipping is going to cost the price of a grand piano, we don't have them in stock but you can have the new one that looks more like a playstation for an extra £50. Can anyone tell me, what are the differences with the SB1 SB2 and am I going going to be depressed using a SB1 after using a SB2? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Music for my party
Having a party this coming Friday and I want to setup my SB2 to entertain the guests with a nice flow of selected music from my collection. So what I want if to select a load of albums/singles that I want to be played on the night. I assume I need to create play lists? Never really used play lists so I am unsure. I also want my selected music to be played randomly - not each individual track but for example if I had 10 albums it would play the albums in a random order. What is the best way for me to set up my party music? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Player menus
I have been changing my SB2 menues around. I want to make the SB2 more friendly for my guests who stay at my house. I have it set so that when you turn on SB2 you are only presented with the Browse Music Folder option. But is it possible to have it set so that as soon as you turn it on it is already in the Browse Music Folder mode? In other words as soon as you turn it on you are presented with your list of artists (artist folders)? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] 'Now playing' GO AWAY!
Sometimes, I turn on SB2 and it says Now playing 'nothing'. You go back to browse music folder and forward (to view artists) and it still says now playing 'nothing'. The only way to get to actually browse anything is to come out of browse music folder into something like settings and then back into browse music folder and everything is OK again. It does this sometimes when an album has finished playing and doesn't seem to let you out of the album folder easily. Is this a known bug? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Queue a live play list?
Lets say you are having a boogie with your friends. You have a good track on but you want to select the next track before the current playing track reaches the end. You are kinda being a DJ. Is there a feature to allow you to Queue up tracks in a live situation without having make a play list before hand? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Track search forward/Backward
Is it just me or is the track search forward and backward unusable. If I try to search through a track it seems to have a mind of its own and continues searching long after I release the button. It seems near on impossible to return the track to normal playing. -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Some folders not showing
Yes Dondi I wiped the cashe and did a rescan manually. I am doing this now whenever I add new music as the standard rescan seems a bit buggy to me. -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Some folders not showing
Hi I am having some trouble with some folders not showing. I recently added a folder called 'Jazz' for example. Within that there are artist and album folders. The 'Jazz' folder refuses to show regardless of how many rescans. I also have some folders that remain, though they were deleted weeks ago. Currently running 6.0.0 (just downloading the latest). Any ideas? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Building a house server?
What do people recommend for a basic house server? I could get my hands on an old (very cheap) Pentium 3, 600 MHz, 256mb ram pc. I have a 200gb drive where my music is stored which would live in the house server. Would a machine of this (old) spec be good enough to cope with slimserver, file sharing and maybe a broadband connection in the future? What do people recommend as a OS? I have an old copy of windows 98 floating around but what about the free OS like BSD? Any tips appreciated. [slim] Re: SB2 issue when PC is turned off
Looks very good but I cannot get broadband here :( Maybe in a year or two! By the way, I tried the holding the power on button and nothing happens. SB2 is dead the only way I can get it on again is to disconnect/reconnect the power cord ??? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: complete mail quoting makes some threads a pain to read
I am just grateful we have this forum. I could not get on with the mailing list and in my ideal world everyone would just use this fine forum software but I understand others like the mailing list format. At least we can now all communicate regardless of how we choose to do it, which is great ;) -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB2 issue when PC is turned off
Thanks for the replies guys, at least I know its not just an issue with me. I do tend to turn my computer off at night so it would be nice if SB2 could not complain about but its not really a big issue. I will try holding the power button as disconnecting the mains every time is a pain in the a**. What is slimnetwork then? -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: softsqueeze $420!!!
Hi guys I am in Ireland. I was tracking my shipment via UPS's site and it arrived at the local airport this morning and the tracking said it had been held back and delivery was to be rescheduled. Phoned UPS and they seemed to think I should have it tomorrow but the VAT would be just over 70 Euros. I found SB2 on a UK site going for around £190. I always thought that members of the EU were free to shop with any of its members without paying import duty but I am not too sure? I ordered from Slim thinking that buying direct would be the best option but it's probably cost me £30 or £40 more :( -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Any chance of SlimDevices making a portable player?
I am interested in a portable device but have not ventured with any current products. Ipods are sexy but expensive a way too little battery life (8 or so hours). For me, I'd be looking for huge battery life - at least 20 hours preferably a lot more a large capacity. I guess any such potential portable products from SD would be at least a year away so perhaps a minimum of 60gb would be a starting point. I second a docking station with all the ins and outs. And also built in mic for portable recording and option to connect stereo mic and record in wav which would open it up to musicians and engineers. -- Orb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
