Are you sure that the station is still broadcasting?

The web site that TuneIn links to has been taken by a cyber-squatter.

Re: [slim] Apps not working after power restored following an outage

2022-12-24 Thread Paul Webster

If you have not rebooted your LMS machine since it restarted
automatically when the power came back then that is probably the easiest
thing to do.
(it might have stared more quickly than your internet connection and the
date/time is now incorrect)

If that does not resolve it then take a look at the LMS logs to see if
there are any clues.

Re: [slim] Darko Audio's recent video tribute to the Squeezebox (GOAT)

2022-12-23 Thread Paul Webster

I didn't get to try it from the N770 but I could see that it still had a
bookmark set to access it with an IP address of my Windows machine ...
from when I used to run LMS in Windows ... so I suspect I might still
have the Nokia770 skin on that system if I migrated machines by copying
all of the data.

To try it out from the N770 has another hurdle though ... it cannot do
modern WiFi security so cannot connect to my LAN so I would have to put
in a special access point for it.

The only caveat to WinSCP and a windows based editor. Even if you use
Notepad++ or another editor that understands Unix Line endings, WinSCP
can do text file Line ending conversions on the fly, and if not
configured properly can leave you with quite a mess. WinSCP should
automatically detect the linux server and automatically configure line
endings...but make sure to double check

Re: [slim] Darko Audio's recent video tribute to the Squeezebox (GOAT)

2022-11-19 Thread Paul Webster

My Controller is starting to play up - I suspect the battery is coming
towards end of its life.
It gets used most days to control a SqueezeAMP in the kitchen which is
also controlled by 2 Jogglers (at opposite ends of the room).

SB2 used every morning and many evenings - screen still good but I think
that is because I have screensaver set to blank it after 30 seconds,
even when playing.

Openpeak2 (Joggler in a bigger case and with 2 front facing speakers)
sits in the bathroom and is used every day.

Joggler on my desk, connected by USB to a Behringer mixer and then to
HiFi Amp is probably the most used.

I just put LMS on an old RPi1 to ship to a family member who currently
uses a Squeezebox Radio with MySqueezebox. The LMS is to keep him
running when BBC switches of Shoutcast streams next year ... hopefully
they will not kill off opensource use of BBC Sounds API at the same
time.

Another family member is waiting for their shipping container to arrive
having just changed country ... in it is their LMS on a RPi, Joggler and
2 AirPlay devices they they were using in UK ... A new SqueezeAMP from
the next batch is destined for them to add to their set as they have
more rooms in their new place.

Grandson has a Joggler in his bedroom that connects to LMS on an old RPi
1 powered by USB socket on their router. They gave me back their SB2
(that was connected to a DJ mixing desk) because it stopped working ...
turns out it was just the power supply that was faulty so it will be
making the return trip soon with a replacement power brick.

Another family member has another of my my old RPi with original IQaudio
HAT plus 3 Jogglers - one with USB connection to good small B&W speakers
and another to a mini HiFi and another in a bedroom using the built-in
speaker.

I love it.

Hopefully it was a BBC glitch.
However, they could insist on API key being used and even shielding it
from view ... which would be a significant issue.
They would be able to detect now that an allocated key is not being used

they have a definition of a video device and a separate definition of a

The speaker has only on/off/volume

The video device includes a “cast” capability (content) along with
pause/resume/volume/change-channel etc.

So my guess is would have to emulate a video device to get the most
functionality (eg channel could perhaps be mapped to LMS favorite) but
still be less than can be done with LMS remote and much less than LMS
web interfaces.

Re: [slim] Matter protocol and Squeezebox/LMS

2022-11-06 Thread Paul Webster

There was a short thread on this recently - but I wasn't able to find it
again quickly.

The specifications are available for download after registering.

Media support is in it but I have not checked the details and, so far, I
have not seen any media players being controlled.
In theory, it could mean that, if LMS was able to act as a client/proxy
then the Squeezebox devices could be controlled by Alexa/Google Home etc
without requiring additional plugins or port forwarding etc.

Thanks.

That is a lot better than I was seeing from their raw data.

I'll include a few of their stations in the next beta build so people in
Canada can determine if it is worth adding all 50 or so of them.

I can hear the CityNews stations from UK ... but they don't plays music
of course, so the song data for them is empty.

Not really ... but I suspect it is not a common situation.
Note, though, LMS is single threaded so perhaps it might occasionally be

In that case - I suggest going back to 8.3 and generate logs again.
I say this because “Persistent” plugin is removed for 8.3 and equivalent
code is now in the 8.3 base.

Philippe (who wrote the persistent stuff) appears to have freed up some
time for some more LMS work so he might be able to have a go at this.
He will have no issue finding enough players given his other plugins and

[slim] Rogers radio stations in Canada

2022-10-26 Thread Paul Webster

I have something working to show song/programme information from Rogers
stations in Canada.
However, they are geo-locked so testing is difficult.

I suspect that their song information is a few minutes (as many as
15-30) behind the real time ... which, if correct, would make it
useless.

Can someone in Canada play this station using the player at the bottom
of their page and see if the track information that they show is really
what is playing or is it what played some minutes earlier?

I was suggesting the connection between the SB3 and the speakers is
where the problem might lie.

I think that the browser JavaScript updates the progress bar using a
timer and periodically asks LMS where it should be. So it is very
possible for the progress bar to be inaccurate when there are some
problems happening.

You could put a higher level of detail on the “player” logs in
LMS/Settings/Advanced/Logging

Do you have any lower bitrate local files to try with?

Also - in the first post you said that there were no problems with BBC
Sounds but in the reply you said that there are problems with it.

If you can show that it happens with low bitrate content then it implies
it is not related to the quality of the network connection (not proof
but indicative).

How is the SB3 connected to the speakers?
What happens if you try a different route to the speakers from SB3?

First version done.

They do put artist/title info into the stream but, as far as LMS is
concerned (which follows a well adopted convention) they have done it in
the wrong way.
They put in
title | artist
rather than
artist - title
So RNP resolves that and it also picks up their artwork that their web
site uses and requests a rescaled version.

I have not done a brand logo or station logos yet.

A slight deviation ... if you have a TV signal available then a digital

We do not support out of tree drivers.

You should be able to build on your pi1 just fine. Albeit a bit slow.
Instead of running "make -j4", just run "make".

Additionally you can enable a swap file, which is disabled by default.
Remove "noswap" from cmdline.txt on the boot disk.

Install the pCP SAMBA extension from the bottom of the LMS page in pCP.
Then you should be able to see the files on the pCP USB drive from your
desktop computer.
However ... generally not a good idea to rely on a single copy of your
music files - especially if you are going to be editing tags.

It is the plugin to do that ... but you have to run a scan after you
install the plugin ... and double-check the settings

Importer settings
- Find music and artist information online during library scan
- Look up missing genres for albums from online music services
- Download missing cover art from online sources
- Download and pre-cache artist pictures from online sources
- Only download pictures for main artists, but not all contributors
(composers, conductors etc.)
- Store placeholder file ("artist.missing") if artist pictures are to be
downloaded, but cannot be found.

You would have to click a button for LMS updates - and it can be
configured to notify you (e.g. via green spot in top right of Material

However, available updates to core pCP do not (currently at least) get

While it is possible that the Github search missed something or it is in
a binary ... I suspect not.

So it does appear to be coming from a file that the scanner is
scanning.

Perhaps it extracts a tag from a mysterious file and then a bit later
decides that the file is not valid for including ... but by then has
already remembered the tag.
Who knows.

Detailed logging in the scanner might show something.

Re: [slim] My squeezebox keeps interrupting internet radio playback - need help

2022-01-15 Thread Paul Webster

Squeezebox Radio launched in 2001 and stopped manufacturing in 2012.
The UE Smart Radio launched in 2012 and is largely the same as
Squeezebox Radio.

So you are using technology that is probably more than 10 years old.
The WiFi hardware in the device might be going faulty with age.

However, there are plenty of people still running Squeezebox Radio and
connecting exclusively over WiFi without problems.

You might be suffering from interaction with a nearby modern WiFi6
access point / mesh network.

That is new and useful information since it does show that it is really
coming from a file that is being scanned and not being left over in some
mysterious database/file.

Does scanner.log show anything?

It also able to provide missing cover art and the name of the playing
programme … but only for some stations.
If this change happens for stations that are already in their database
then I expect that set of stations to decline.

Radio.net could also provide Now Playing info but, strangely, although
they accept submissions of live track info (in a format almost the as
TuneIn) and make it available on their web site .. they don’t make use
of it in their own app.

If it then works without problems then it implies it has having too many

Google appears to be going down the route of modifying their stuff to
side-step the issue.
They seem to have removed the ability to adjust the group volume (users
now have to adjust each player individually) and also volume change
using the mobile phone hardware volume control.

Maybe reducing the patent infringement count will reduce a future
licence fee.

As always when there are complex legal issues that i don't know the
details of ... this is mere speculation on my part based on reading
elsewhere (in particular an Ars Technica article).

Re: [slim] Sonos-Google lawsuit

2022-01-10 Thread Paul Webster

It was in the Slimserver/LMS code since mid-2002 so would have been
worked on for some weeks or months before and designed before that.

Version 2.3 Release 05/19/02
Multiple players can now synchronize their audio outputs to within 1
millisecond of each other. This allows you to play the same music in
more than one room, without any "reverb" effect. If the server
knows about more than one client, there is a Sync hronization choice in
SLIMP3 Home. Press RIGHT to enter that area. Scroll through the other
players and press RIGHT to sync up. Press right again to unsync.

https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/blob/55f8e3f3d584baf6a3979a13fd23c7ef8e845d59/Changelog2.html#L5

However, I have not read the Sonos patent or the details of their claim
against Google.
Note though ... it is unlikely to have been about the case that there is
synchronisation but instead about 1 or 2 key features of how it was
described in the patent and how they think Google did near enough the
same thing.

Re: [slim] https connection to LMS ?

2021-12-11 Thread Paul Webster

People asking for https does come up occasionally but given that the
hardware players require http then it would be difficult for LMS to make
a switch completely.
However, you are not asking for that.

I am running Chrome 96 and have no issues accessing localhost or
127.0.0.1 or 192.168.x.y

Google are making changes in this area - but I think it is for requests
that attempt to cross from public to private addresses and private or
public to localhost.
See https://developer.chrome.com/blog/private-network-access-update/

Do you have some sort of front-end that you access over https that then
provides the link to LMS over http?

You could run nginx or similar in front of LMS - as a reverse proxy. It
could terminate https and then relay over http to LMS.
I think that it really should not be necessary with Chrome at least up
to and including the planned version 102.

But, in the real world, I already have 2 Boom, some SB2 and Receivers,
Controller.

I really want a Transporter (for fun) ... but I have absolutely no
desire to spend > 250GBP (and probably not > 100).

I don't have a Touch - and probably should get one for completeness but
I have Jogglers and RPi with touchscreen.

Remember though - anything you buy probably has an old power supply (and
battery if Radio) ... so you might end up with 2 devices that don't last
much longer.

Answer ... they have a TuneIn like service (I don't think it is TuneIn

TuneIn) so you find the stations in there (via the app) and then play
them and set as a favourite if wanted.
