Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
OK - got that. I have just configured both TVs to access the Media Server. So, that's some progress with my setup. At least I can see what's playing, instead of having to stand up and walk over to the screen every time a track comes on that I don't recognise. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before :-$ StridingEdge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57498 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102086 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
Possibly interesting but doesn't look like anything near the finished article and not what I'm looking for. I suppose what I really want is something very similar to the Touch but with a screen twice the size and a remote you don't need a teenager with a magnifying glass to use (to see the tiny buttons and even tinier writing) Let's see what's my needs are ... 1. Large screen that displays album artwork 2. Large remote with well laid out buttons. The Touch fails miserably on all counts - the buttons are not laid out well, they are too small and the writing can only be seen with assistance - all presumably because they insisted on making it the same size as the Touch so that they would fit into the same outer box 3. Streaming FLAC and other lossless files from a PC and to be able to handle a large library 4. Stream radio from the internet 5. Handle extensive tagging 6. Best audio quality, without the need to add external DAC StridingEdge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57498 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102086 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
Thanks - that's interesting. I will continue to look at solutions and see what is best. I might, I confess, go down the Sonos route but it is an expensive one. Re Tags - I see more problems on home audio forums relating to poor tagging than just about anything else. I was lucky to have spent some time with Media Jukebox before going down the Logitech route and I've got a good handle on them. It does help if you're anally retentive with Tags, as I am. The more you use them (and learn to do so correctly) the more useful they are. That's aside from the problems caused by not using them, using them incorrectly or being inconsistent.. Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
It would make more sense to clear cache as part of the process wouldn't it? What would it matter if it was an automated and combined process? Are there any downsides to that? I might, as new practice clear it every time I do a complete scan from now on. The disappointment was the final straw at the end of a crap day - not just a particular reaction just to a computer based element that didn't work. If the latter was normally such a big deal I'd have topped myself years ago :) StridingEdge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57498 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102086 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Besides, I was under the impression that the complete scan process did a clean cache at the same time - apparently not! Er... no to your question. Thanks for that. All my Flac files are stereo (I assume when you said "multichannel you were referring to 5.1?) and that's all I want from that side of things. Do the Oppos handle that OK? Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
Yes, bad file it turns out. It wasn't a rant at all but more one of sheer disappointment. But, as with many others I have seen on here over the last year or so, I can see a finite lifetime for the Touch, as everything has of course but I know if it has any sort of actual fault it's not going to get fixed. I was merely interested in other devices on the market. When I bought the Touch there were few, if any, alternatives other than the Sonos. Now, when you look on Amazon, there are a lot of streaming boxes from the stables of a few of the well known mid-priced manufactures, such as Marantz, Denon, Pioneer etc. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of them? One particular question is - are there any GOOD devices, that people know of, that stream (both from internet and PC) and that combine a player that can handle CD, SACD, DVD-A, CD-R etc etc StridingEdge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57498 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102086 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Alternative to Touch
Hey all My Touch was working perfectly until the scan started terminating after a minute or so. I have decided that I can no longer run with a device that is unsupported and cannot waste any more time trying to fix a problem for which there seems to be no company support and with an issue that it seems like many others have had with no resolution for. So, what other options are out there for a streaming device. I just want an interface to play the playlists / music on my PC. Re: [slim] Andriod apps for controlling Logitech devices. (question)
It depends on what you want the app to do, I suspect. All I want from an app is to be able to have minimal control from the sofa (where I cannot see the tiny screen, even if it were angled at the correct position). I have the "official" one and with that, I can see what's playing, I can skip tracks and change playlists (and it was free). That's it - it does all I want and the only limitation is with the tiny screen on my phone. However, if you want to be able to do everything with an app that you could do with either the touch-screen or the LMS software, then you may need to try all three? Re: [slim] Accessing BBC5 Live Sports Extra
Geoff Just to clarify - that URL was taken from my touch settings and that it needs no further intervention from me to enable the stream to work. I didn't mean that it was the URL for listening via the internet on a PC. If it doesn't work for you then I suspect it is as others have mentioned and a limitation for the device you have? ModelCitizen wrote: > > > > > The only way a smart phone will destroy your experience of being outside > is if you let it, actually not even if you let it... if you make it so.I > couldn't agree more! I have similar uses for my smartphone - except I don't have so many specialist apps. My phone has limited storage so I keep my apps to the minimum but do use internet for things like bird recognition (RSPB). I wouldn't be without the phone in the outdoors but it's not for the traditional reasons. I walk anything from 30 to 60 miles a week with my dog and use the GPS in the phone to track our distances. I have a couple of walking apps which show both the sublime and the ridiculous. One is called "My Tracks", whcih is a Google linked app and came pre-loaded on the phone. It does not have OS mapping but has a very simple road map style that has no terrain detail (well, no detail at all actually) but you can easily upload your walk to Google maps. However, it is not accurate - and you can see it zig-zagging all over the place as you traverse your route. My lady has the same on her phone and we did a test. Over a short distance we both used the app and then compared notes afterwards - mine stated I had done 4 miles whilst hers stated 2.5!!! Now the second app is rather different in pretty much every way to that. It is called MM Tracker and uses Memory Map .qct mapping. It has full functionality of that of a dedicated GPS and has the full OS map with all the required detail. It has proven to be (I'd hesitate to claim any GPS was 100% accurate) highly trustworthy, both in current location and distance travelled. When you compare the monthly charge of £8, the free Smartphone and the cost of the app (£5 or 6), it is a pretty useful tool. I would stress that I can map-read and use a compass and don't use the app for route finding, as such. Where it is useful when you are in the mountains, is when a top has lots of knobbly lumps and the actual summit is unclear - the GPS can show you which it is. Otherwise, I just use it to track our daily walk distance and for that it is brilliant. I do have other outdoor apps for weather (again, very helpful as a GUIDE and not to be taken seriously) and various one relating to British hills and mountains. Other than that, a couple of music ones - Shazam and Soundhound (which must be familiar here) and a brilliant one called "TuneIn Radio" which gives me pretty much any radio station available on the internet. I find the idea that a phone and the outdoors are incompatible with experiencing peace, solitude or wilderness. My phone is used as a backup and a backup only when I am in the mountains. I don't think about it as a phone but it's there if I wanted to use it in an emergency (notwithstanding the unreliable signal). Even the most careful and experienced mountain people step on a boulder and break an ankle. That said, responsible us of the phone is paramount when using it outdoors. I have seen many cases of idiots going ill-prepared and ill-equipped who call mountain rescue because they are tired or because they are lost, often when their mobile phone has no signal or because they are using road-style GPS, or even because they don't know how to use it. There is also an etiquette issue - I would not allow myself to get to a top and then call the missus and say "you'll never guess where I am!" at the top of my voice. I also would not want to listen to music in the outdoors, even though I have some uploaded to the phone. I prefer the sounds of the countryside to music and much prefer to hear the wind in the grass, the bleat of distant sheep and the odd raven or buzzard. If you want to ensure that the phone remains unobtrusive outdoors, there is a very simple method to ensure that remains so - don't give people your number! My mobile is known by my garage, doctor and dentist, none of whom phone me but just text messages). Other than that it's one mate and my missus and that's it.
