Re: [slim] NAS Advice

2020-07-29 Thread Tex

I recommend looking at this model since the developer of
Qlogitechmediaserver has done such a good job.
I am using a raspberry pi with a 1 TB external usb drive and find after
the initial set up to be very dependable and maintenance free.
But I recommend reading this thread before you decide. You can get a 4
bay QNAP 453 for about 550 dollars.
It was a breeze to set up and is extremely stable, particularly this
model because that's what the developer has.

bought a new Duet and had so few problems that I bought 2 more units.
And I will be honest if there was something better ( for my purposes) I

Re: [slim] Preamp advice

2017-11-29 Thread Tex

For it's price range I don't think you will do any worse. I have always
used a sound card.

https://www.amazon.com/ART-USB-Phono-Plus-PS/dp/B000BBGCCI/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8=1511957436=8-21=phono+preamp

For this device, the direction of signal flow is from the low signal
level analogue domain (vinyl/LP/phono) to the digital domain
(USB/Optical). Thus, this ART unit is not a Digital-to-Analog(ue)
Converter (the "DAC" sort of unit which you specify) but its "opposite"
an "ADC" (Analogue-to-Digital Converter). This unit is also a phono
preamplifier which boosts the low voltage signal from the moving magnet
or moving coil phonograph pickup to higher "line level" in order to
drive a subsequent (in the signal path) separate amplifier--or to
supplement a hi-fi receiver or preamp lacking (as is often the case) a
phono input.
In other words, this ART is primarily a phono preamplifier--something to
supply gain (amplification) to drive headphones or the just mentioned
follow-on analog(ue) audio switching, processing, or amplifying units.
You might think of this ART USB Phono Plus as a tidy little combination
of two functions: (1) Phono Preamp/Headphone Monitoring Amplifier and
(2) ADC (Analog to Digital USB or Optical).
By the way, this unit is at least the equal of anything else in its
price range with respect to preserving the audio signal quality. It is
capable of passing the usable dynamic range of which LPs are capable
without the compression mentioned by another person answering your
question... and without adding distortion you are likely to be able to
hear considering the masking effects of the much larger combined
distortions which are inherent to the recording and playback medium that
is vinyl (e.g., the "LP" phonograph record). (There are many who
disagree with this last point, however.)
Finally, the quality or fidelity of the music or other sound which you
play "off" your computer's hard drive can be no better than the quality
of the original signal encoded in digital format to your hard drive. If
you have high bit-rate, high definition source material (CD quality or
better) on your hard drive, the sound processor chip on your laptop's
motherboard is almost certainly going to degrade that signal by
contaminating it with noise and compromising its dynamic range (or
degrade other aspects of the signal as well). If high quality sound
output from high quality source material is your goal, then you'd do
better to use a high quality "soundcard" (installed in desktop computer
OR use an "outboard" soundcard (i.e., a so-called "audio interface").
ASUS makes a fine soundcard for the consumer market
(http://www.amazon.com/PCI-Express-XONAR-ESSENCE-STX-90-YAA0C0-0UAN00Z/dp/B001OV789U/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics=UTF8=1422964422=1-2=asus+sound+card+xonar)
but be sure to read the review comments to get the installation right
from the get-go on Windows machines. If you are an audiophile, you can
find computer soundcards costing almost 10 times what the ASUS does...
but not sounding appreciably better. As far as the external audio
interfaces go, there are many excellent, quite affordable (from
$100-$500... or more, of course) devices aimed at musicians and
recordists for use in their semi-pro (or pro) home studios.
These days, in a given price range, the digital signal processing chips
used in these devices are either the same or very close cousins of one
another (sourcing from just a few chip makers). You can see that in how
close the specs are between brands and models in a given range. Thus,
the differences in price often have more to do with features and
flexibility (e.g., numbers and types of inputs and outputs), build
quality and best engineering practices, and, of course, "brand
reputation"--than the fundamental parameters

Should give you plenty of time to find the hex mini screw driver. I had

easy to get out.

Re: [slim] Probably dumb squeezebox question...

2017-02-09 Thread Tex

well I was wrong you do need to plug it in while holding the + button.

First, some clarifications:

Your SB3 is connected via LAN (wired) to a wireless bridge.
The bridge is a separate device, i.e. you do not use the bridge feature
of the SB3, right?

SqueezeConfig will never change the settings on its own.
If you select a player in SqueezeConfig, it will ask you if it should
use the Wifi values of your phone. If you select NO, you will see the
unaltered settings of your SB3. (At least, that's the expected
behaviour. If it behaves differently, it's a bug.)

Have you tried a factory reset of the SB3?
The SB3 can only be found by SqueezeConfig if it is in Setup mode, e.g.
after a factory reset.
Press-Hold the "+" button on the SB3 remote while plugging in the power
cable.
This should factory reset the SB3 and it should be found by
SqueezeConfig (the SB3 needs to be connected via LAN cable in this
case!).

But why exactly do you need to re-configure your SB3 every day?
Does it lose its connection to the server?

If yes:
At which point does it lose the connection?
After a server restart?

You may want to try to set a static IP for the SB3 (using
SqueezeConfig). This often helps a lot.

BTW: If the SB3 loses its connection to the server after a server
restart, it's often enough to *restart* the SB3 to reconnect.
In SqueezeConfig, you can long-press on a player and select "Reset".
This will restart the SB3, but keep the current values.

If you are using SqueezeCommander, you can also reconnect an unconnected
SB3 from within SqueezeCommander, i.e. you do not need to use
SqueezeConfig in this case.
SqueezeConfig is only needed for the initial setup.

I have SqueezConfig installed on an old tablet & the last time I tried
it, it found the Duet but never was able to activate it. If you try UDAP
the only time I was able to get it to work was by connecting the laptop
directly to the Duet. Connecting directly to the router should do it but
what do I know about networking:rolleyes: I have gone to the dark with a
PI3 & sound card that way I can run LMS on the same device & not worry
about initializing... But love the old VFD displays:cool:

You can put the SB3 into an initial state by the remote control and
then reactive it with SqueezeConfig or UDAP, just like the Duet.

Re: [slim] Headphones and Raspberry Pi

2016-10-25 Thread Tex

To really get a "good" sound out of a set of headphones like that you
will need a "good" amp. I have spent (wasted:p) a lot of time at
Head-Fi.org) trying to figure out a "good" set up and finally bought a
Grace M9XX. It's 500 dollars new from MassDrop when they actually sell
them. But the amp that is readily available is the O2 JDS Labs you can
get a amp & DAC for under 400 maybe closer to 300. The amp by itself
would be about 125.
I use a laptop with Squeezeplay installed and feed the the Grace M9XX
and I can get it to run the ASIO driver so I can listen to Spotify in
better fidelity but I can also use my main desktop system and control
the laptop Squeezeplay such that the desktop audio doesn't interfere
with the Squeezeplay.
I have a set of Grados that can be driven by a iphone but sound so much
better when driven through the Grace amp. I tried the jack out of my
Touch and it was acceptable but after setting up this system I don't
want to "go back."
I recommend reading some of the Head-Fi discussions on amps and yes a
lot of it personal bias but there is some good information. I don't own
a set of Beyerdynamics but that model from what I read needs an fairly
powerful amp to sound good.

Re: [slim] SB Classic blank--anything I can try to revive it?

2015-12-28 Thread Tex

To my old tired ears the Duet sounds as good if not better than the SB3.
I like the SB3 because it has a display and works with a IR remote.
I notice you have a Duet remote which would be a great assist to
activating a Duet. Still you can find endless threads on the frustrating
problems with the Duet so you might avoid.
I have a dedicated server which I find helps the whole system and I have
very few problems with my Duet.
But if you can get a Touch it is much better.
I am trying to avoid Sonos but nothing else is on the horizon with the
same capabilities as Squeezebox.

Hi Curt962

Don't know how much it will help but when I used it I first log in at
the Rhapsody website to access it their and then went to the Logitech
website to add the app and make sure it was log in to my account at
Rhapsody. Of course it didn't have all the the access I had when I was a
full subscriber. And I only used it for the 30 day trial period. But I
had been using Rhapsody for a long time even before I had a Squeezebox

affiliated with the account you have at the Logitech web site?
