Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-07-26 Thread amcluesent

I was meaning the sample rate parameter to the flac command needs to be
matched to 48000, so in convert.conf:

Code:

  ogg flc * *
# R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af
volume=0,channels=2 -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs
--totally-silent --endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16
--sample-rate=48000 --compression-level-0 -

Restart Squeezcenter, then in the filetypes menu, I set the FLAC
handling of Ogg to be mplayer from the dropdown options and disabled the
others.

Some of these Networked Media Tank units are being tried as digital
streamers, they are apparently good for 24/96 FLAC with output on S/PDIF
to your choice of DAC. Now the h/w is commodity, I guess the USP will be
in the software ecosystem which is where Apple is strog.

Re: [slim] How to combine Wifi and ethernet? (Frustrated)

2009-04-19 Thread amcluesent

What a mess.

I suspect having a router on the wired NIC and the neighbour's router
on the wi-fi is problem as both will be advertising themselves as
default routes to your PC for the 192.168.0.xxx network.

Windows XP is likely giving a better interface metric to the wired NIC,
which goes no-where.

I'd start by disabling wi-fi on the PC, then try setting your router to
offer DHCP in the 192.168.2.xxx range and see of you can get music
streaming working.

Enable wi-fi and manually force the interface metric on the wi-fi card
to be better than the NIC and/or force the default gateway to be the
wi-fi NIC.

Windows drivers, ASIO etc has no relevance at all to the way the Duet
works.

Have a read of the beginners guide -
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuide

Now, the Squeezebox is connected to the same DAC, but doesn't sound so
good..

Have you ripped your CD using a lossless format? If you are using
iTunes, by default it rips using a lossy encoder so your music won't
sound like the original CD.

Also, could it be possible to use Foobar or Songbird to run the Duet?

Not yet. Coding an add-in to Songbird as been asked about on these

How long does it take you to get to, say, Ringleader of the

Well, it would be :

Select 'Artist Index' from the home menu
A few spins of the wheel to scroll to 'M', click OK to see list of
artists beginning with 'M', ordered by name
Spin the wheel to 'Morrisey', click OK to see album list/artwork
ordered by album name.
Spin to highlight wanted album and click Play.

NB of course, that's using CustomBrowse deep-artists.

correct...

Well not quite, or at least not yet.

1) Setting up a Receiver without having access to a Controller (even on

2) The Controller is also a music player (when using the latest s/w)
with the same control facilities as the Receiver.
3) The Controller presents the server-side search/browse plugins on the
SqueezeCenter, which I find essential YMMV
4) In their current releases, the two controller apps are just plain
slow and buggy - at least when your library get sizeable

From the iTunes Store? If so, the music will have Apple's Digital

Yep. Under Settings-Information-Player Information you have that.

As I said, you need to use the menus to have Boom connect to the
SqueezeNetwork, then navigate to Settings-Player PIN.

Re: [slim] Controller or alternative (iPod touch/iPhone)?

2008-11-27 Thread amcluesent

OK, you use custom browse.

Yep. But as to the speed part, the Controller is in my experience far
more consistent in speed and smoothness of presenting menus etc. Both
Squidgy and iPeng seem to 'halt' processing of touches of the UI for
intervals as if blocked awaiting server interaction.

There is a by design oddity in Windows OS. After a WOL event, and no

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-20 Thread amcluesent

Feedback on 1.1

Sorted the database load of larger libraries

No so good :

- Bug in handling albums of same name (Best of, Greatest Hits etc).
Rather than play the selected album, creates a playlist by taking one
track from all albums which have the same name
- Albums, simply too slow ( 1 minute!) to create viewable menu. This
is with about 3200 albums
- Artists, name truncation with '...', should use smaller font for
these entries
- Artists, albums without dates are listed alphabetically, followed by
dated albums in ascending date order!
- Genres menus doesn't need A-Z structure on menu
- Genres, for same reason one genre 'Classical' always returns zero
entries. The other 27 Genres I have work fine. Go figure.
- Genres, should have an option to order by album name rather than
current order by artist name but display album title
- Genres, building list slow for large number of albums in common genre
(i.e. Rock)
- Now playing, hardware buttons should be active to control volume

Bottom line, 1.1 may be OK for peeps with up to a few hundred rock/pop
albums.

Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-10-31 Thread amcluesent

I'm beginning to think the SBR/SBC design was a mistake.

The lack of IR on the SBR is major nuisance for those of us with IR
based remotes like Pronto which work fine with SB3/TP.

And the SBC is too expensive for what it does (yes, even with 7.3
activation of the line-out).

I'm minded that the community of Touch/iPhone owners and music streamer
owners has a huge overlap. Having a controller app for the Touch/iPhone
is pretty much a 'hygiene factor' for any supplier now.

Following the 'slim' concept, I'm assuming that the RS232 input would

to the player(s) as needed and echo back to the RS232.

I have some sympathy with noobs with this kit. I just factory reset my
SBC and then found that the menu ordering of the 'home' menu is now
following the Menu Sort Order values I set in CustomBrowse. Bouncing
the server now and again pays too.

Re: [slim] FYI be aware of Mac adress when using Wol

2008-08-06 Thread amcluesent

Finally! I have WOL working after much puzzlement by overwriting the
stale MAC address of the server.

How hard can it be to make the message 'Waking up SqueezeCentre' to
include the MAC address it's hitting to at least give some clue!

Re: [slim] Duet Wireless Network Problems - Possible Solution?

2008-08-02 Thread amcluesent

All this blaming of routers is starting to sound pretty thin to me.

It's a possibility. I had Belkin 802.11b model where the wi-fi
throughput would collapse, but not go completely, when the broadband had
been under load for a few hours. A reboot would sort the memory
leak/whatever.

D-Link DIR-655 has been 100% running Duet.

Yep, try it but IMHO the SB3/Transporter differences would get lost by a
mid-range AV Receiver.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50299

Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

RAID5 with a good h/w controller with it's on battary-backed RAM would
seem sensible once your collection 500Gb.

Re: [slim] If this thing could only manage music...

2008-07-27 Thread amcluesent

I've been using Firetongue Software OrangeCD as a music librarian, very
happy how it scans and catalogue the files, plus you can add amounts of
additional info into it's database. The PC client app. has a good
integration to any Sqeezecenter, so you can click on any music and have
it playing from the server to a player you select.

Have you tried rebooting the server.

And TBH from your posting it's not very clear how many PCs you have.

Wired or wi-fi connection to the player? I'd guess wi-fi and some
interference on the channel, either another wi-fi router, X10 unit or
wireless phone has been installed nearby.

I'm not sure why there are 2 entries as there is only one
modem/router

The MAC addresses are different, that's another linksys with a default
SSID

I'd try moving to channels 3 or 9 and see what the reception is like.
