These aren't being used nearly as much as they should be so it's time they move on to a new home 2 x SB Radios, both barely used. 1 x SB3 (Logitech front branding, Squeezebox on the back). However this is quite a techie solution, no GUI, all CLI based. What would be nice is a consumer electronics style solution (something that can be installed on a HTPC with a slot-load style drive) that behaves like this by default (options configurable): Insert audio CD. Check CD against database of ripped CDs. If it's already been ripped, start playing ripped version and eject CD. If it hasn't been ripped: Check for CD-Text labels on CD. If present then use these for ID3 tags. If not then perform a CDDB lookup. Begin ripping. Once first track is encoded, start playing album from beginning. When ripping complete eject disc. This would obviously need to work with some kind of media library manager, but that's the way I'd imagine it working. This works similarly, insert disk and run batch file (this starts the ripper and related programs, although it could be set to run upon cd instertion) If the music has already been ripped, it ejects the disk, if not it consults freedb (if there is more than one entry it takes the first automatically) When ripping is complete is ejects the disk and you run a different batch script which closes the programs. There is an option in CDex for it to playback cd's, so I'll check that out. I have been looking into silent PC's for my servers and have finally worked out a fanless solution, but it does have drawbacks and couldn't replace a Squeezebox: 1) To be fanless, you either need just 1 x 3.5 HDD or 2 x 2.5 HDD which limits storage capacity, more than 1 disk produces too much heat and without a fan removing the heat from the case, you'll suffer from the computer freezing etc. 2) For a fanless solution, it isn't cheap, the best I could come up with was £280 without an operating system, keyboard, mouse or monitor. [slim] Internet Radio help
Can anyone help with a small problem I have: I can get the Squeezebox (2) to connect to the computer and play back MP3's and I can get onto Squeezenetwork, but I can't get any other radio stations to play. I have installed AlienBBC and that can't find any programs. The server connects to the internet fine and I can ping www.bbc.co.uk through it. I have tried the mplayer test and that also worked fine. Hi, Yes, AlienBBC 1.0 and it does appear in the menu's etc. I've had a look around and it seems that Squeezenetwork works fine, but if accessing any via the PC, radio, podcasts or RSS feeds, none of them work. It seems it can't find the internet if connecting through slimserver, but the computer can access the internet fine. The firewall is setup to allow everything out and block everything in if that helps. This one has me stumped I'm afraid, I'm probably missing a setting somewhere. Jim Wrote: Good to see. Would be interesting to ask them what defines a top-end and what they think about comparing the SB3 with the top-end models they reviewed. In audio I've always thought top-end meant the sound and nothing else and not hearing the other devices it would be interesting how they compared to a SB3 with a dedicated DAC. If you're in top-end only audio type worth bothering with is FLAC, plus ability to have access to lossy radio - maybe. Any sort of remote control with a screen can easily be substituted for some sort of PalmPilot type device. You're rich so expense of a computer is not a concern and no doubt one is already ownded. With a computer connected a million other options are opened. Ease of use of ripping might be but you could argue a properly configured PC with EAC is not going to be harder to use (and achieve better quality) than any device that accepts CD's. And also, there's always the we rip your CD's option for the seriously rich or lazy. Maybe just for rich people who don't know how to choose the other stuff or magazine reviews against the true expensive/hi-end stuff SlimDevices should offer the SqueezeBox Ultra Package comprising of a SB3, a cool looking PC, wireless router, Color Palm Remote, dedicated DAC and a free FLAC rip of up to 500 CD's. I tried the new Phillips in Curry;s the other day and whilst the all-in-one idea is a good one, the interface was the same as the bottom of the range streamium's and still has the same problem that the screen needs a backlight or a change of colours or something, black text on grey doesn't work! I'm busy working on the cool looking PC as we speak, have already sorted out a headless system which rips CD's to FLAC or MP3 automatically, runs Slimserver out of the box and has crash recovery software (just in case anything crashes, it restarts it within 60 seconds). Am looking into suppliers for decent cases etc. to expand on the range of cheaper recycled PC's, will post here as soon as I sort anything out. Andrew p.s. [slim] New From AudioFi - plug and go music server
I hope this is OK to put on here with everyone at slimdevices, if not, I apologise and please remove it. With all of the threads on here about problems with slimserver I decided to build a completely configured, ready to go music server, here is a bit more about it: This system needs no keyboard, mouse or monitor. Simply plug it in, plug in your wireless streamer and its all ready to go. To copy your CD's onto the server, simply put the disk in the drive. It will then access a local database, encode your CD and eject it when it is finished. No user input required. Out of the box support for any of the wireless players currently available. The system is totally secure and does not need an internet connection so it is safe from hackers. It has crash recovery software as standard, should any of the software crash, it will auto-reload within 60 seconds. As standard it comes with a 200Gb hard disk, but this can be upgraded on order. It can also be set to convert to MP3 or FLAC, depending on your preference. Obviously it does not come with internet radio setup as it is designed not to access the internet at all for security, but should you already have a wireless network, I can configure it to attach to that instead. The price also includes a wireless access point, again pre-configured, so it is just a matter of plugging it in. The local CD database is updated monthly and auto-update CD's will be sent out every month for a yearly subscription (to cover CD and postage costs only) At the moment this is only available in the UK as postage would cost to much abroad, but I can look into it if required. The computers are quite large, but very quiet and designed to be placed out of the way. I am investigating smaller computers later this week. As this is still in final testing, I don't see there being any problems, but am going to sell the first 5 at a reduced price on this forum. All I ask is that if you find any problems you let me know so I can sort them out. I have been testing it for a few weeks and the only thing so far has been a couple of CD's not recognised which I am fixing as we speak. The price for these first 5 is £175+postage which includes the 200Gb hard disk and wireless access point. Each will take about 7 days to build as I test thorougly before shipping to be certain they work perfectly. Skins can be changed if you used the web interface from another computer on the network. Plugins can be installed as part of the build, they could technically be added, but it could effect reliability and would void the 1 year warranty. If you have existing files, let me know on order and I'll setup the networking side so you can transfer them across using the crossover cable (I'll include instructions) It actually runs Windows NT 4.0, so no hacking possible. It is intended primarilly for a technophobe as it is easier to use than a standard DVD player, but with all of the problems people have been having on here, it seemed it could have another use. Yes, it includes the license in the price, the computers I buy include the license (they are ex-corporate PC's) NT was chosen for reliability and as there isn't any internet connection security patches aren't needed. I had considered Linux, but finding software to work automatically was difficult and I also had to write some special programs for the automatic crash recovery and a few other problems associated with running a headless machine. I may look into Unix in the future, but as I buy PC's with Windows licenses included it seemed the better choice for now. The company I use for the PC's checks that the businesses they get them from have bought full licenses rather than upgrades. I know the company where the first batch have come from and all of the old PC's with NT licenses have been scrapped and replaced by new PC's with full Windows XP licenses so the full NT license stays with the same PC. This review has just been pointed out to me: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1759560,00.asp One bit in particular is interesting: But the ZonePlayer does the opposite as well: It can play the same music throughout the house, perfectly synchronized. Even with this, business is very slow and I think the problem is that people simply don't understand the technology and an advert in a paper/magazine still doesn't really explain it fully, I have to offer a free demo before hand. Once I get my foot in the door, the product sells itself, the problem is getting that first step. Getting reviews in the likes of PCW/What Hifi/Mac etc. is a good step, but these magazines are read by a very niche group. The iPod has become huge and now MP3 is a common format, so I think somehow the Squeezebox needs to be reviewed in less technical magazines and papers, but also in such a way that it won't confuse the general user. The general install is very straight forward for everyone who posts here, but I'm guessing a lot of you work in the computer industry and therefore understand how these things work. For someone who has a computer and an iPod but has no idea how to do much else, it is a very daunting task. The scope of such a product is huge, home users, businesses with phone switchboards (on hold music, but with a web interface!), pubs and even DJ's in clubs! All my opinion of course Andrew www.audiofi.co.uk By the way, if anyone has any tips for marketing, I'm all ears!! -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] No sound (at all)
Hello all, my turn to ask for help. I had my squeezebox running perfectly and then last night decided to install AlienBBC. Since then, I am not getting any output at all on either radio or my ripped music. I had it working briefly last night (both BBC and music), but today it has stopped again. OK, now it is working fine, but I'll carry on anyway in case it stops again tomorrow! I have run it with the --d_source and just keeps repeating setting maxbitrare to: 0 It does this over and over again, is this right, or is that part of the problem. I think I fixed it this time by crashing flac.exe in task manager and now it is running again, does this sound right? Sorry if this is a bit muddled, but I wasn't expecting it to start working half way through writing it! Thanks in advance Andrew -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: No sound (at all)
Thanks for the quick response, I realised I hadn't really put much information. I am using Slimserver 6.1.2 with Mplayer pre6 in the Bin\MS... folder I have put the codecs in a folder within this folder called codecs. I have also put a copy of mplayer in this folder as well as in the mplayer folder just to be on the safe side. I have AlienBBC working at the moment, but how long it will stay like this for I'm not sure, is it possible that flac.exe is crashing? Also, I have left the DOS prompt loaded and it has set the bitrate to 0 about 100 times now, it just keeps repeating it over and over, is this right? Thanks Andrew -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: No sound (at all)
Hi, When it stops working, it does seem to be everything, not just AlienBBC. I tried testing mplayer in a command prompt and that worked fine so I guess it is at the slimserver side of things. I ran it in debug mode when not working and again when working and the only difference seemed to be it was quicker moving on from the Song Queue:0 when working. Also, the constant repeating of the bitrate settings, but that is when working and not. I have set it to 320 in the Internet Radio settings, but its doing it on MP3 and AIFF files as well, is this normal? Thanks again Andrew -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SlimDevices losing out in the UK
Arghhh, sorry about that everyone, I tried to remove all traces but obviously missed one, will fix it now!! I did previously sell the Roku, but after some hardware failures I gave the Squeezebox a try and haven't looked back since. It gets a far better reception from customers as well!! -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: SlimDevices losing out in the UK
Steve, I'm not sure if there have been many reviews of them both side by side, I have the What HiFi here somewhere, but from what I can remember it only had the Roku and Netgear in it, no Squeezebox. Having owned both the Roku and Squeezebox though, the Squeezebox does sound better, the Roku really needs an external DAC, the built in one isn't brilliant. Although the Roku links straight into itunes, when I had one it refused to play AAC files (that may have been fixed now, I'm not sure). The Squeezebox will quite happily link to your iTunes database file so you can manage the files in iTunes and play them via SlimServer, I do this and I'm sure a lot of other people do. One other thing, the Squeezebox is on offer at Dabs at the moment which makes it cheaper than the Roku Hope this helps a little Andrew -- audiofi ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
