[slim] Re: Why is scanning so slo-o-o-o-w?
One big problem people can have is that DMA is not turned on. This will dramatically slow down any disk intensive tasks. Win2K has a bug where it sometimes will turn this off for you. Not sure about XP. I had this happen to me after I installed a SATA drive into a Win2K machine, and none of the audio would play well. Found out what it was, enabled DMA, and no more skipping. That said, the rescan function will never be very quick. Every song in your library needs to be accessed by your hard drive. If your disk is fragmented, each fragment of the tag data needs to be accessed. Random Seek Times for hard drives are roughly 10ms, and that's just to position the read head above the data to be read. Reading the data takes time too. The seek overhead for every 100 songs works out to be about a second. So we will never see a 5000 song library rescanned in less than a minute. If you get real bad rescan times, I'd recommend defragging your library with something like Norton's defrag utility (SpeedDisk?) [slim] Re: WAV Tags Slowing Slimserver
If you decide to rip to flac, you can use a tagging program to use the file names to generate the tags, or simply replace all the tag data with blanks, so even if it doesn't work, there's easy ways to get there. There might be some program out there that deals with wav headers, but I'm not aware of any. The .wav standard can be found online, and isn't too hard to understand, so I'm sure someone has written something. [slim] Re: No Artist No Album
I'm having a similar problem. I encoded an entire disk to .wav, and Slim won't play it at all. I can browse to it in the Browse Folders dialog, but it says can't play file when I try. It is a huge file, as the entire CD is encoded in one wav file, so I'm figuring that might be the issue...Winamp can play the file just fine, btw. I haven't messed around with it since I have the CD encoded to .flac as well, but it _should_ work as a wav... -- b1gcountry b1gcountry's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22503 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Can't get Multi-Disc Working?
I just created a new Wiki on getting this running. Let me know what you think, or just make any improvements on your own. I don't mind looking into the file order bug noted at the bottom of the wiki, but I don't want to repeat work if anyone is currently looking into it already. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MultiDisc Oh, and this is my first post BTW. Thanks CeeJay. AFAIK, you just type in the wiki Page name and it automatically creates a link to the page, correct?
