[slim] Deterioration of technical support

2008-12-15 Thread billingsgate

I knew it was inevitable when Logitech bought Slim Devices. Tech support
would essentially disappear.

I truly enjoyed the immediate and personal support offered by Slim
Devices back when it was an independent company. My problems were
addressed by helpful engineers, or logged as bug reports. Things got
fixed rapidly and satisfactorily.

Now? No f***ing way! I sent in a simple complaint about the new
alignment of SqueezeNetwork menus, plus an issue about the
SqueezeNetwork web page which preventes me from accessing Live365.

Five days later I get a message that because I happen to live in Hong
Kong, my issue is being redirected to Logitech Asia-Pacific tech
support.

Obviously no one even read my report. It has absoilutely NOTHING to do
with my location. It has absolutely nothing to do with my hardware
(which I bought in the USA, by the way).

So instead of actually responding to my simple report, now time is
wasted shuffling user reports around the globe, far far away from the
engineers at Slim Devices who can so simply and easily respond to my
report by checking the SqueezeNetwork web page.

Likely I will wait another five days to get some sort of boilerplate
cut-and-paste response. Want to bet the advice is: Uninstall and
reinstall my SqueezeCenter software, reboot, flush my browser cache.
I'll bet cold cash that's the reply I get.

Bring back REAL service. It used to be one of the best things which
distinguished Slim Devices from every other company out there.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver and Controller now shipping!

2008-05-09 Thread billingsgate

Just curious (and call me stupid if this info is on the website, because
I don't see it), in terms of internal hardware and sound quality, are
the Receiver and my SqueezeBox 3 essentially the same, or not? I'm
considering getting more devices for my home, and not sure which to
look at.

Secondly, does the controller easily switch between wireless networks?
I live in a 3-story house made entirely of steel-reinforced concrete.
Each floor must have its own separate wireless bridge, since the
wireless signal can't penetrate between floors. Each bridge has its own
frequency and security PIN, so when a wireless device moves from one
floor to another it has to log on as if to a new network (all these
bridges are different brands, so that's how I have to do it), though
they all connect to the same home network. So the question is: if I
carry the Controller between floors, it will lose one signal and locate
another. Can I save multiple security settings in it so that it
automatically logs on each time it loses one signal and finds another?

Anyone who has the patience to read my question and respond will be
blessed with gratitude.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCentre XP SP3

2008-05-09 Thread billingsgate

I installed SP3 (had HUGE problems installing it!), but as someone else
said, there is almost nothing new in it compared to an up-to-date XP
system. Anyway, it has had no effect, good or bad, on my SqueezeCentre.
So don't worry.

Re: [slim] Squeeze Center file access

2008-01-31 Thread billingsgate

Can someone tell me what Squeeze Center is? I have two Squeezeboxes,
using SlimServer and Squeeze Network. So what is Squeeze Center? I
don't see any information or downloads relating to it.

[slim] How to disable Slim Server at startup

2007-09-19 Thread billingsgate

I mostly use my SB3 with Squeeze Network. Maybe once a week I might use
Slim Server to play something from my computer. But I notice that
slim.exe is always running and using up memory. I dislike having
anything constantly running and taking up memory if I only rarely ever
use it. I have disabled automatically check for software updates in
the Slim Server interface, but other than completely uninstalling Slim
Server, or tinkering with the registry, how can I get it to not run on
startup, and only run when I decide to manually start it up?

I have Windows XP with all updates, using Slim Server 6.5.5

Re: [slim] How to disable Slim Server at startup

2007-09-19 Thread billingsgate

Thanks. The problem I had was that slim.exe was starting and running,
but no icon appeared in the system tray. Thanks to your hint, I clicked
on the Slim Server in the Program Files menu to start it up manually.
Then the system tray icon appeared but the option to Run at System
Startup was greyed out! I had to stop Slim Server, then the startup
option was available to un-check.

Problem solved, but still took some figuring out to get there.

Re: [slim] RadioIO

2007-09-15 Thread billingsgate

I have e-mailed various addresses at radioio to report this issue of the
annoying commercials over the last several days. I just tried again. I
hope Greg will fix the commercial-free streams for my Soundpass
membership.

I note that things are really changing at radioio. Another host has
left (World stream) apparently and been replaced by someone who handles
several other streams (and who is, I believe, leading those other
streams fast in the direction of middle-of-the-road pop hits rather
than the intelligent alternative radioio boasts of being).

I've been a radioio listener for 5 years. Seems that success is perhaps
spoiling them.

[slim] Updating Internet Radio List

2006-01-24 Thread billingsgate

I want to update the Internet Radio presets on Slim Server. I have been
an avid Radioio listener for two years. I am delighted to see their
channels in the Slim Server presets. But nowadays Radioio has many more
streams than the ones listed in the SlimServer. I would like to add them
to the Radioio presets menu. How can I do that?

Note that there are more Radioio new stations than I could fit into a
favorites list. Besides, it makes most sense to add the new streams
to the preset menu. Any way I can edit this menu?
