Re: [slim] How do I stop Bob Dylan from sneaking into Aimee Mann?

2009-01-18 Thread bouton

Thanks for your detailed instructions. I tried and tried. Learned way
much more than I ever wanted to know about Linux. Gave up and installed
it onto the flash drive of the T5720 - AND IT STILL DIDN'T Work!. So
took the hd, put it into another pc - and guess what - it was the HD
that was corrupted. I just happened somehow to randomly use several
corrupted files.
So - reformatted the HD, re-copied all my music files to the HD - and
at last all works.
True I gave up on Linux - but at least I have squeezecenter running
very quietly on windows XPe on the HP thin client. Nice. What I wanted
in the end.

Again - thanks

[slim] How do I stop Bob Dylan from sneaking into Aimee Mann?

2009-01-17 Thread bouton

I have posted this on the linux forum, but no luck, so thought I'd try
here.

I may be trying the impossible, but I really want it to work.
I have installed linux/squeezecenter on a pendrive and am running it on
a thin client hpt5720. Well almost!

It works fine for radio etc but if i tried to play music - very
weird things happen. Skips, jumps, plays other bits of songs in the
middle of the one I am listening to - very disconcerting to have Bob
Dylan burst into the middle of Aimee Mann even if only for a split
second!

1. I have 2 of the original Slimp3s (which I love and are hard-wired
into my LAN and built into the walls of a purpose build construction

2. Installed Linux Mint 6 because it had all the codecs - good I
thought
- and it was very easy - onto a 4GB pen drive following instructions
from pendrivelinux.com

3. Installed squeezecenter 7.3.2 - 24612

4. Installed lame v 3.98 via apt-get

5. Set to DHCP

6. Music mounted from NAS drive via mount -t cifs .
and it all seems to be fine. music scans in. I get the right number of
albums etc.

7. HPT5720 is only for squeezecenter. It's an AMD Geode DX1500, 1.0GHz
w 512 SDRAM and 512 Flas Ram with winXP embedded and is wired into the
network

8. All the music (700+tracks) is MP3 - mixed bag of speeds/rates.

Then I go to play it - and yuck! Again - and it's with every song. Not
just one or two. Always.

Except Internet radio which works just fine so at least I can get Radio
Paradise ;)

I set the player-audio-bitrate to 320 (with LAME noted as installed
correctly) and Lame quality=9

I can't diagnose network or performance issues with the plugin because
it doesn't work with SLIMP3s.

So - any ideas?
This is such a perfect set up I want it to work ba.
Thanks
Katherine

[slim] Songs stutter/skip - where do I start?

2008-10-26 Thread bouton

Setup:
HP T5720 AMD GeodeĀ™ NX 1500 1.0 GHz,512 MB DDR SDRAM,512 MB Flash RAM
Fedora 9 Live USB
Squeezecenter SqueezeCenter Version: 7.2.1 - 23448 installed on Fedora
on USB stick
Music on mounted network drive
wired network
Music mostly MP3s, some wav, some wma
Latest Alien BBC installed, with mplayer, lame and ffmpeg

When I play music it seems to stutter, skip, stop sometimes comes up
rebuffering
Radio seems to play fine (says 128kb)

Where do I start in trying to figure out how/where to fix this? Is it a
hardware issue? Is it a software/setting issue?

thanks

Re: [slim] Songs stutter/skip - where do I start?

2008-10-26 Thread bouton

Spent all day on this trying to understand. Have lame installed, have
mplayer installed - works fine according to the test.

radio plays fine - no skipping at all - so I figure it is a server
problem. I have set and unset a zillion options - nothing seems to
work. I have set the slimp3 player from 320 down to 64 - no luck. I
have set - via adv-network (I think) the max wma bitsream rate from
320-128 and back (don't know why but I did) - no change.

its a slimp2 so there is no network test available.
i have set via adv-perforamnce service priority to 20 - no change.

Anyone??

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-23 Thread bouton

I've tried to go through the 49+ pages of this forum and just want to
make sure I've got this right.

I have 3 slimp3s hardwired (built into the walls actually) of a house
connected into the multiroom audio system. The controlling PC sits in a
cupboard in the garage, also hardwired into the LAN. I like have the
screen visible - use them for weather, time, alarm, train scheds, news ...
the whole shebang. It works just like I like it Except for those times
when I want to peruse the music, albums covers etc to play music. I
have toyed with the idea of the Nokia800 but it seems that the new
controller may be the better (faster though less expandable) way to
go.

Is this correct? To get it to work with my system pf slimp3, is all I
have to do is:
1) buy the controller
2) put a wifi access point into the house LAN
3) upgrade slimserver 6.5.x to slimserver 7.x

Also - does one controller work all 3 slimp3 separately - is there like
on the server a pull down list of which slimp3 I want to direct the
commands to?

thanks

[slim] streaming vs remote control versus gui... confused

2005-12-14 Thread bouton

I am somewhat confused between whatis happening where in streaming, the
remote control, the gui etc.

What I'd like is a nicer GUI for the few times I use that interface to
control my two slimp3s. I am in the process of writing one (and
learning perl with my background in php) that I think would meet my
needs. Then someone pointed out Jinzara which says it works with
slimserver via streaming. What does that mean? I can use Jinzara as a
GUI to control playlists, library etc, then also use my remote control
to move back and forth between songs, search from slimp3 etc.

Is that right? If so maybe I should concentrate on getting jinzara to
do what I want (ie adding slimserver settings etc, rather that start
from re-learning perl etc as my brain is getting too full these days
what with xml,javascript,ajax,php,sql,...)

thanks

[slim] Re: Whole House Audio with Squeezebox

2005-12-06 Thread bouton

I have a russound whole audio (not the cav but the cheaper older version
with 2 slimp3s built into the wall, one on ground floor, one in 2nd
floor bedroom, attached as two of the four sources. The rca cable and
the cat5e is run from the second floor down to the ground floor
network/stereo cabinet. The russound in wall keypads change the source.
So I can play a cd, music from one slimp3, music from another slimp3 and
the DAB radio in each and every room of the house depending on the
source I select from the keypad. I don't have it set up such that I
can control the slimp3 via the russound keypad yet, but its on the
list.
v happy with the set up.and it dodn't break the bank. Started with a
complete remodel though so easy to pull wires.

[slim] most ancient PC and dedicated slimserver?

2005-11-22 Thread bouton

Was curious how slow we can go? I am running dedicated slimserver 6.2.x
on winxp pro on a 1998/9? DAN (remember them UK?) asus 333Mhz 512kb ram
200GBHD sitting hardwired in the garage, plugging along.

Very slow to rescan my 2000 song library, but once its done it
works ok. A stutter here and there maybe once or twice a day, just
enough to bother me.

Was wondering what the very slightest next step up might be which
someone out there is already using, and knows it works, for the
perfect, oldest (cheapest ie free from someone throwing it out) PC. ;)

Sort of reverse snobbery

[slim] can hardware or network cause slimserver to crash

2005-06-02 Thread bouton

Still trying to solve my slimserver crashing.

I have winxp pro sp2 on a p4 box connected to my home network via a
solwise sar715 router with nothing else at all installed on it.

I have tried slimserver versions 5.4.1, 6.0.x, and 6.1.x and with one
album (.mp3) in the music directory as a test and all crash at various
times. I have reformated the hard drive and re-installed xp several
times, even resorted to reformatting and installing Linux (Simply
Mepis).

And always it crashes, sometimes lasting longer that others (2 days
max) then it crashes. Crashes to such a degree that I get a black
screen on the two SLIMP3s then a flashing cannot connect Debug
from the www page does no good as that is gone and debug from the
command line gives various error msgs - all different (one was unicode
problem which made me do just the one clean album.

So now I am thinking it is a hardware problem, a network/router problem
or some sort of electric problem as I feel like I have tried every
software route possible.

Anyone had any experiences like this?

[slim] how to get debug log when slimserver crashing?

My slimserver (6.1 or 6.02 both) on winxp (with and without SP2) on a

crashes, I go to the web interface, get page not found, hit refresh, go

So how do I figure out what is going wrong. Only the pre-installed

[slim] The Slim Wiki - We can make this an excellent source of information

2005-03-07 Thread K.A. Bouton
Title: Message

I am a firm believer in
Wikis. The one you've chosen - TikiWiki is a bit daunting for new users, but can
be overcome - and is really really useful. Once it gets started and
rolling it can provide a much more organized way to find out information on
slimserver et all, answering the tedious questions you must get day in and
out.
Because I have been gathering bits and pieces
recently, and frustrated at having to search through pages of forum material -
very very useful but difficult to filter, I have taken kdf to heart, and have
been plugging away and editing and adding some wikipages, including putting up
some slimserver documentation. Hope thats ok.
I would suggest you make the wiki a direct
link from the header under http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_* along with resources/forums/plugins etc
Regards Katherine
_ kdf said I thought the idea of
a wiki was to let any jump in and contribute, making it a living, organic document? Many of the Slim staff
have indicated that keeping up with
the volume of email is hard enough, I would expect overseeing the wiki
would also be difficult. I would
expect, given past expressions on this subject, that contribtutions are wanted on everything.
If you are willing to accept me as a ad hoc
proxy, here is the list of things I can think of off the cuff:
Configuration data: compare setups, scan
times, etc
linux startup scripts for various flavours
(gentoo, Suse keep coming up on this list)
Plugin Ideas (great for anyone looking to try
out server development but lacking a
concrete idea).
Howto's, for things like FAAD setup, or
AlienBBC on mac/windows.
