Sean and team,

Re: moving to two internal antennas...
Have you tested whether wireless reception is improved, degraded, or
identical to the SB2 in sub-optimal conditions?

Some of us run on the edge of our bandwidth sometimes, and reception
quality becomes critical.

Thanks,

mkozlows Wrote:

I understand your frustration, but I disagree with your suggestion to
change the implementation. If you select "browse by folder", then you
expect the server to present the directories and files according to the
file and folder names. It does not follow that you would expect the
server to jump into the files at the last stage and present according
to metadata tags. That is what the other browsing methods are for.

You have two solutions. Correct your file names, or correct your
metadata tags.

[slim] Re: Need Help with Poor Buffer Filling and Dropouts

2005-11-01 Thread dwc

I have had some seemingly random 'descending to zero' buffer issues, and
still get them. It seems I can clear the situation by backing out of
that song and starting another song somewhere else in the folder
structure. Then go back to that song and try again.

Leads me to believe it's not the network strength. It may be a cpu
issue, but since I can work around it I haven't dug into it deeply.

[slim] Browse by music folder using the remote - cellphone searching?

2005-11-06 Thread dwc

I'm not getting results I expect when searching using the remote, mainly
when browing by music folder

For example when I hit "6" once, I get a folder starting with "L", not
"M" as I would expect. This happens evey time, the same "L" folder
comes up when I repeat the procedure. it's not the first L folder, but
one down the list.

Playing around with it it's not entierly consistent. It seems to work a
little more correctly when searching by artist, but occasionally I get a
random result even in that mode.

- Is there someething I haven't read about this that would explain it?
- Is it just me? (and if so, what might I do to resolve? full rescan?)
- Known issue? anything I can do other than perl coding to assist?

Thanks,
Dan

Actually, as was mentioned on another thread or two in the last couple
days, you don't need to kick off a db rescan of any sort to pick up the
new files.

Just use your remote and navigate into the new directories using browse
by folder, then scroll through each new song at least once. This means
hit the down arrow until you've gone through all the songs in the new
folder until you come back to the first song. Once you've done that
the songs are in the db. No pesky downtime. :) Repeat for each new
folder.

[slim] Re: Shoutcast stream sent to wrong SB

2005-11-17 Thread dwc

For the record I was using the default skin, and i'm using the 6.2.1
build from 11/14 or 11/15:

SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5157 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

The behavior seems straightforward. There seems to be a "default"
player, probably the player added to the system first. Starting the
stream from the internet radio page sends the srteam to the "default"
player, and there was no switch I could see to specify which box to
send the stream to.

Easy workaround to save the stream to a playlist and "move it over"
that way.

[slim] SB3 sitting on two IP addys...

2005-11-22 Thread dwc

Today I tried to add a laptop to my lan and it was failing to get a dhcp
address ("address already in use" errors)...

Investigation leads me to find that one of my SB3's is sitting on an
extra address, and neither the s/w side of the SB3 nor the DHCP server
displays it.

What do I mean? The dhcp server shows ip addy 100 leased to the SB3
(i.e. to it's mac address). The home/player setting page shows the
same thing:
Player Firmware Version: 28
The IP address for this player is: 192.168.0.100:33373
The ethernet MAC address for this player is: 00:04:20:06:03:16
Wireless Signal Strength: 62%

But the SB3 is _also_ sitting on 192.168.0.106
(responds to pings, sniffer shows same mac address as above, turning
off SB breaks ping)

Bouncing the SB3 shows it reclaiming its proper 100 adress in the dhcp
log, but no mention of the 106 address.

Sorry if I missed this in the docs, but:

1. Does each SBx need two ip addresses? What's the second one for?
2. Can I get the device to let go of the 106 address or does it need it
for internet radio or something?
3. I don't have dhcp logs going back far enough to show whether or not
106 was ever leased to the SB3 or not. Is there any other way it could
have grabbed this IP?

all clues appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

[slim] Re: SB3 sitting on two IP addys...

2005-11-23 Thread dwc

Thanks JJ,

Yeah the box can reserve addys, and perma-assign addys to specific
nics. Problem is that the dhcp box doesn't know that the SB is sitting
on the extra addy, so it it still trying to assign that addy to new
clients. The clients refuse the address becuase it's alrady in use and
the server continues to try to reassign the same addy, (going nowhere).

The workaround seems to be to take the addy out of dhcp rotation by
assigning it to a "fake" name or something on the server side. I'd
prefer to get the SB to give up and release the address if possible.

[slim] Re: Problem, Can't open File

2005-12-05 Thread dwc

Scott,
It's a known (and fixed) issue that might not be fixed in the version
of Slimserver you are running.

What happens is some tracks are not written to the DB, and thus SS ends
up not being able to play them. Once a directory gets messed up like
this, only a rescan will clean it up.

The workaround: From now on, to make sure all the new tracks get
written to the DB properly, just be sure to scroll through the entire
track listing once on a newly added folder before hitting "play".
(i.e. hit down arrow until you come back to the first track again.)

Scolling though each track writes that track's info to the db. You can
confirm by "searching" for the new tracks or album. Once it's in the DB
it will show up in a search.

That's where the bug was. It would only pick up on songs that
"displayed" on the screen, and not all the songs in the folder. You
had to scan through the list of songs to make sure they all got written
to the db.

[slim] Re: Portable player suggestions

2005-12-08 Thread dwc

Check into the Cowon (IAudio) X-5.

www.iaudiophile.net

- Sounds good.
- Plays FLAC as well as mp3, etc.
- FM radio, voice recording, etc.
- No s/w required. It shows up as a drive letter, so drag and drop
files onto it.

The biggest drawback for some users is that it doesn't support browsing
by tags, you browse only by folder structure. They say that that might
be added in a future firmware upgrade.

Why don't you run the numbers on this for yourself?
- Those "silent" components are not cheap. At some point (which I think
you're well past with that system description) it becomes less expensive
to buy the SB.
- Also you fail to mention the sound card you'd be running and its
cost. You have to get a pretty expensive sound card to rival the SB's
audio quality.
- Consider the power requirements of a full PC versus the SB, that's
also a cost issue as electricity isn't cheap.
- Finally, you need to run that sound to the nearest stereo system so
that you can listen to it, which requires that that PC be reasonably
close to the stereo, or you'll be running really long (messy) lengths
of cable from that hidden cupboard to where your stereo components
are.

Hopefully that helps you justify your purchase. Grats on the SB!

[slim] Re: Shuffling

2006-01-24 Thread dwc

I believe the shuffle setting is global. That means you have to change
the shuffle settings in the two scenarios you describe. Good thing is
that there is a shuffle button on the remote, so it's easy to switch the
shuffle setting without navigating menu layers.

Also good skins (like Fishbone) have the shuffle setting right up fron
for easy access.

So change your shuffle setting when you switch between album play and
playlist play. (switch shuffle before loading the new playlist or
album)

[slim] Re: Hard drive format for Windows 98

2006-01-31 Thread dwc

Kyle,

Copying files should not be an issue, but the FAT32 file system doesn't
handle errors as well as ntfs does, so you may be more prone to drive
errors. It's be best to get off 98 if you can and move to XP if the
box can handle it.

It looks like Win98 scandisk has issues with large fat32 partitions,
putting you at a max volume of 127 GB that can be fixed by scandisk.
if you go bigger you can't use scandisk to recover.:

"The ScanDisk tool included with Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft
Windows 98 is a 16-bit program. Such programs have a single memory
block maximum allocation size of 16 MB less 64 KB. Therefore, The
Windows 95 or Windows 98 ScanDisk tool cannot process volumes using the
FAT32 file system that have a FAT larger than 16 MB less 64 KB in size.
A FAT entry on a volume using the FAT32 file system uses 4 bytes, so
ScanDisk cannot process the FAT on a volume using the FAT32 file system
that defines more than 4,177,920 clusters (including the two reserved
clusters). Including the FATs themselves, * this works out, at the
maximum of 32 KB per cluster, to a volume size of 127.53 gigabytes
(GB). *"

see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184006/en-us (limitations of
fat32)

also see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154997/en-us (description
thereof)

Dan

[slim] Re: Can't use SB at full volume?

2006-03-12 Thread dwc

I ignore it when the DEQ shows digital input into the red. I cannot
hear any actual distortion or degredation in the sound, so I don't
worry about it any more. I used to pad the input with the gain offset,
but I've brought it back up to zero since then. Any digital sample at
0db is going to register a clip on the meter, but I do not think that
necessarily means the (digital) output is going to be distorted as a
result.

I do avoid boosting any frequencies with the EQ though. Cut only.

[slim] Change appearance of 6.3 buffer fullness screenie?

2006-06-29 Thread dwc

I am ok with the new "progress bar" graphic showing buffer fullness, but
I don't want the dancing background lights. How can I tweak that
acreensaver to not show the dancing lights?

Thanks,
Dan

[slim] Re: Change appearance of 6.3 buffer fullness screenie?

2006-06-29 Thread dwc

KDF,

I have examined all the "now playing" screensavers. Of all the
variations provided, only one includes the buffer fullness. It is
called "Show Buffer Fullness"

In 6.2.x, "Show Buffer Fullness" showed only the buffer percentage,
i.e. nothing additional was displayed beyond the song info you have
specified.

In 6.3, the display has been altered. Adding the "progress bar" graphic
along the top - which graphically represents buffer fullness. In
addition, the "Spectrum" is running in the background. I would like to
disable the Spectrum element of the "Show Buffer Fullness" screensaver.

Thanks,
Dan

Not sure how B follows A here, i.e. I think your assumption is wrong.
I am using a 16-bit nonOS dac, and have no trouble using the SB's

2006-07-27 Thread dwc

This was the ticket for me:

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=05722535000

The Sony Zs-SN10. Has a line in port, remote, and will also play mp3's
off data cd's. Believe it or not it sounds great. I bought it for my
daughter, but ever since I have wanted one for me also.

I _also_ have a truly mammoth JVC boombox, which is really too clunky
to carry around easily.

Well, if it is an SB2, there's always the chance that certain components
are "end-of-life-ing" on you. I have four SB3's and one of them has
died. it just reboots endlessly. I suspect a bad power component, and
the forum members have offered their help but I never got around to
going in with my multimeter and testing voltage at all the suggested
locations. if you are up for that, you may be able to isolate the bad
component.

Contributing to an open-source project pays off in other ways.
Experience and recognition are two key benefits (of many). I have a
friend who put some time into contributing to an extension of Apache,
and he has _never_ had to submit a resume for a job since. The code he
contributed to that project speaks for itself, and people come to him
offering jobs.

So the actual contribution you make to a project may not pay off in
immediate cash, but it is certainly a way to make a name for yourself
and to participate in a community of like-minded contributors. That
network and the reputation you build inside it can frequently lead to
very high-paying gigs.

[slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"

2009-09-02 Thread dwc

Hi All,

Sad day for me last week. One of my beloved SB3's just died. Last
week I held on support phone line for an hour before a guy came on the
line and told me it was a very busy support day and he'd take my number
for a call back. No one ever called back. I am on the line again now
listening to the techno/ambient hold music. I fear my player is out of
the support period anyway. (The support period is one year?)

If the player is out of warranty, is there a way I can send this back
for a paid repair? (can I beg for a sympathy credit? :)

(talking to a support rep now)

Re: [slim] Help/Sad - SB3 just "bricked"

2009-09-02 Thread dwc

Thanks Siduhe,

Got escalated and spoke to second rep. Unfortunately the SB3's with
the "Slimdevices" Logo (as opposed to the Logitech Logo) are not
eligible for repair - even paid repair - at this point. The rep said
the parts are not in inventory. [This is curious to me as the Classic
sure looks like an SB3, but I guess they have changed internal
parts...(?)]

So I cannot pay the $90 for a fix. I was offered a discount on a new
purchase, pending my sending the dead unit back in. So the idea is that
I send this SB3 back in with the RMA they emailed me, and then a sales
rep will call me up and give me some kind of discount towards my next
purchase.

The support rep didn't have all the details on the discount offer, so I
will update this thread after I have sent the unit in and spoken to the
rep who should call me shortly thereafter.

Bricked in the sense that I get no display and Slimserver doesn't see
the SB3 on power up.

Reset (holding + button) has no effect. I cross checked power supplies
with my other SB# and the power supply is OK.

I wasn't familiar with Xilink reset (holding 1 button) until now, but I
tried that too. Thanks for the suggestion.

FYI for others: here's the doc on resets:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_Reset_commands

In the past I had a "display only" issue where the display died but the
SB3 still showed up on the network. SD fixed that for me. In this case
the SB3 seems completely non-functional, the only sign of life being the
red light peeking out the back of the optical socket.

One weird disconnect between what the support rep said about not being

[slim] scanner.exe *"No Disk"* hanging on my CDROM drive??!!

2009-10-11 Thread dwc

I tried searching, sorry if I missed the workaround/fix for this.

ENV:
Version: 7.3.2 - 24695 @ Mon Jan 19 18:55:04 PST 2009
Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Platform Architecture: 586
Perl Version: 5.8.8 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

Every night I have a scheduled "Full Scan".

If I have used the DVD-ROM drive that day, the scanner will hang on the
empty drive, with this error. My scan doesn't complete:

Code:

"There is no disk in the drive, Please insert a disk into drive D:"
  (cancel) (try again) (continue)

Can someone help me understand why scanner.exe got confused into caring
about my DVD drive? My scan is specifically set to a different folder
on a different drive, and this issue did not occur in the past with
past versions. I do not believe I have any links or shortcuts in my
E:\FLAC folder that point to D:.

I can's seem to get past the dialog box either, because it rolls back
my scan and a few minutes later the damn message pops up again. I have
to reboot the box to get the scanner to complete without issue, and then
the system is only stable until the next time I have to rip a CD, at
which point scanner will hang again.

Thanks for any help. Glad to provide info.
