[slim] In ceiling setup with squeezeamp
This community has been very helpful for quite some time (I was using squeezeboxen long before logitech appeared) and for that I've been very greatful. We are having some work done in our kitchen, and I'm using this opportunity to put in ceiling mounted speakers. It is behind a wall from the main setup so sound gets lost from the main system, particularly with the sounds of food preparation. The goal is not high fidelity, but the chance to listen to music, news, podcasts, etc. while using the kitchen. Quick on and off would facilitate use. Current plans that I would like to bounce off the assembled wisdom here would be to use a squeezeamp to drive two Polk RCi 80's ceiling speakers. Currently this is powered by an older laptop 16v power supply So the questions I have surround how this should be installed? 1) What is the best way to power the squeezeamp? 2) should the squeezeamp and/or power supply be enclosed somehow? 3) I am planing on using an iphone with a material skin to control this one (of probably 6 squeeze devices). Are there any alternatives (in wall panel, etc.) that I should be considering Alternately, are there good sites that make this simple? Most of what I find through google assume a large home theater setup. My goal is much more minimalist. Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
Actually Ipeng is not bad zt 2x on the ipad. One thing that does not seem to work: One cannot edit the configuration of options on the bottom bar. For example, one can't replace 'artists' with 'favorites' etc. Dragging seems to work, but it does not replace the previous icon. Also a small request for ipeng when ported to the ipad. Long classical titles etc. are hard to read when they are truncated. I'm guessing with all the screen real estate that will be an 'ex-problem' Finally, while I appreciate the many ambitious suggestions in this thread. Its probably a good representation of squeezebox buyers, or at least what are called sometimes 'lead' or 'heavy' users, which should be useful to Slim, no? err, I'm 51 and sort of into marketing... -- ericj ericj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22941 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Can I stream Flac from slimserver to smartphone?
If you use Pocket Tunes, an add on player, you can stream the output of the slibserver, but it must be transcoded to a lower bitrate and an mp3 stream. I do it at 64k and use the Treo's web broser to control things with the handheld skin. Not elegant, but useful if you have signal... [slim] Re: Recording Internet streams for later playback
There was a very brief discussion, with alterntives for windows and mac at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=87217#post87217 The script is a major improvement over the one I sketched out in that note. The only thing that one might suggest is that the stream could be transcoded (say from Real to mp3) with lame afterwards for the non-mp3 streams. I am listening to last night's WKCR broadcast right now (8am) from last night's broadcast. Thanks much for the posted script.... -- ericj ericj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21344 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo
Let's avoid copyright discussions by stipulating that the goal here is not violations. After all, the technology of capturing streaming audio, is widely available, I was just remarking on how it could be used with slimserver in a tivo-like fashion. So, how do you do it? This is not my idea, of course, and is cobbled from various on- line discussions, but my rudimentary script looks like this: #!/bin/sh mplayer -playlist "/media/bits/Playlists/WKCR real.m3u" -ao pcm:file=/media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav -vc dummy -vo null ; lame -h /media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav /media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcr.mp3 ; rm /media/bits/music/Broadcasts/wkcrstream.wav ; I use crontab to start the script when needed, and use a crontab entry to kill the mplayer instance when the program is done. I'm sure thatt there are many improvements possible including more graceful ways of closing mplayer, or piping the output to lame, but this works for me. [slim] Re: Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo
IANAL (i am not a lawyer) but recording for personal use (think of this as off the air taping) is probably not a problem, and last I looked, while TIVO annoys networks, it is currently legal. I would be happy if someone who knew more offered an informed opinion. Quibbles aside, I'll post details whenI return home this evening. -- ericj ericj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21084 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Fun Squeezebox Tricks I: Slimserver as Radio Tivo
I'm surprised that there is so little discussion/sharing about applying the capabilities of the Squeezebox. There are many neat applications, but mostly I learn about them by seeing someone struggle to get them to work. Let me start by sharing one, its not ingenious, but useful. You can record your favorite radio show on your slimserver machine and then listen to it at your leasure. For those stations that don't have a audio on demand, you can make one. My slimserver lives on an linux machine, so I use mplayer to record the stream (in this case real) to a wave file, and then use lame to transcode it to mp3. This is all set up in a batch file which is run by a cron script. In windows, programs like total recorder can do the same. I store them in a subdirectory called Broadcasts, and keep 5 days of my favorite serious Jazz shows from WKCR, Columbia U.'s fine station. If there is interest I can post the details, but my purpose was to start a discussion of such fairly easy, but perhaps not so obvious Squeezebox Tricks... -- ericj ericj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21084 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

No problem w/ installation, but with WinXPPro sp2, and several sound devices. I get 'garbled' sound with both flac and mp3 with and without bitrate limiting to the device. I do have (too?) many sound devices on this machine... Thanks for the excellent concept. [slim] Re: Playlist disappear because of missing #EXTM3U
I had a similar problem that turned out to be a permissions problem. The directory needed to belong to the slimserver account in my particular installation. The issue was write access. I'm running linux (ubuntu) 6.2.1 and the logfile indicated that it could not write the playlist. I can now save, edit and otherwise manipulate the list. -- ericj ericj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19219 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
