Re: [slim] Apple's FairPlay DRM - Songbird can play it. Why not SqueezeCenter?
@ModelCitizen: No need to get rude here buddy. Keep it calm. I don't see why iTunes would have to be running on the Squeezebox itself. As far as I understand, Songbird uses Quicktime to decode the DRM files (which in turn have had to be played and authorized at least once from within iTunes before this works). So my guess is it would be possible for SqueezeCenter to do the same, e.g. use the installed quicktime components to decode the file and then stream it to the SB in whatever format you wish. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53460 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Apple's FairPlay DRM - Songbird can play it. Why not SqueezeCenter?
First, we are not here to discuss why people buy from iTunes store, are we? At least this was not my intent when I opened this thread. People buy from there for a reason. It's convinient, especially if you are an iTunes user anyway. If it's wrong or right is not the subject of this thread, so let's put this discussion elsewhere. Most SB owners don't buy from iTunes is just another assumption. No way to prove that, thus unnecessary to further discuss. All I want here is discuss the technical possibility - can it be done, yes or no. I don't think you have to have iTunes running in the background all the time. At least that's not the case with Songbird. It just uses the quicktime components that are installed on the system anyways. So instead of SC calling mov123 or faad to decode a file, have it call quicktime. What's the big deal? And if you can (obviously Songbird can, so I don't see why SC could not) decode the files using quicktime and at the same time get pass the DRM, great. Why not do it? Because some people have political/moral objections? I think those SB owners who buy from iTunes store would really really welcome it if SC was able to stream those protected files. I for one would welcome it. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53460 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It says it is using mov123 for the transcoding. There is no other setting available. The other thing is I am using Mac OS X on intel processors. With each new release of SqueezeCenter I have to change the setting for the transcoding from little endian to big endian because the SC people just don't get it that little endian was used back on the PowerPC days (might be the other way around, from big to little, I don't remember). If I don't do that, all my MP4 don't play at all. Maybe it's got omething to do with that. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss
Hi, to clarify: These files are top notch quality. They play without any hiss on any other player (like from within iTunes or on my iPod or through Winamp on Windows). So it's only on the SB Duet where the files are causing problems. ReplayGain is turned off in SC. I also don't seem to have had this problem a while back, so I am guessing it was introduced with one of the recent SC upgrades. I tried 7.1 today, but I get the same thing. The noise also seems to dynamically adjust. e.g. in portions of the track that have limited volume, the noise is going down. When the track builds up, the noise builds up. I have attached a track to this thread which will perfectly show this behavior in the first couple of seconds of the track, where two or three chords of piano are played, with silence inbetween them. As soon as the piano chors hits the silence, you can hear how the noise increases and then goes down again once the piano chord is over. Please note that SC is running on Mac OS X (Intel based). Maybe that's of importance. Every new version of SC that is released for Mac has the wrong conversion setting in the convert.conf. It is telling FLAC to use big endian instead of little endian. Big endian is not working on Intel based processors, it is only working on PPC processors. See my seperate thread for this in the developer subforum. Maybe this is related. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Is there hiss when powering off the Squeezebox? Make sure there are no adverse power effects. No. As I said earlier. No noise when paused, stopped or turned off. Hiss is only present when playing MP4 files (mov123 to flac conversion). Everything else is perfect, no noise when playing other formats. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss
Hi, I recently noticed that a lot of my tracks being played over a Duet (server 7.01 on mac os x) have a lot of backgrond noise, like white static or as if you would play old tapes. When listening to these tracks with iTunes or whatever, I don't get that noise. I think I can pretty much rule out bad encondings. They are all high quality rips directly from digital media like CD or from iTunes store. Also, the Duet is connected via digital link, not analog, so I think I can also rule out bad cables or analog interferences. Maybe this is related, but I really have to pump up the volume of the speakers/stereo connected to the Duet. As if the server would send the tracks at really low volume. Maybe the static is coming from that. Any ideas what might be wrong here? [slim] Turn off motion sensor in controller?
Hi, while the motion sensor in the Duet controller is nice in certain scenarios, it doesn't make much sense if you tend to carry the controller around with you in the house. I tend to have it in one of my pockets to always be able to control my system, no matter where I am. So what happens? The motion sensor is triggered by each and every move I make, preventing the controller to dim down it's screen or go into sleep mode. Result: Battery is dead after only a couple of hours. Can the motion sensor in any way be configured or turned off? [slim] m4a files give me white noise only
hi, I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden my SB3 (etherenet connection) will not play any m4a files any more. Those files were either ripped by myself or are purchased iTunes Plus files. Instead of the music, I get a very harsh and disturbing white noise at full volume. I think this started with server version 6.5.4, not 100% sure though. I upgraded to the 7.x branch but that did not help a thing. Any ideas what might be wrong? [slim] 6.2.2 scan needs hours and hours to complete
Hi, I am very new to the Slim System. In fact I just installed a squeezbox3 and slimserver on windows just a couple of days ago. first time. so here is a problem right away: slimserver needs several hours to scan my library (816 albums with 9443 songs by 225 artists). During that time the whole system becomes very unresponsive, slim.exe taking up 90-100% of the CPU. It gets so tough that I can't even log into the web interface anymore (so: no, I can not look at the debugging logs). The first couple of times I thought the software is choking on something and just crashes, but after like 2.5 hours it suddenly finished. Now... the REscan, which should take less time to my understanding, is taking just as long. There must be a bug or something in my music files that the server doesn't like. Any ideas? Any help appreciated. yes foobar also takes long, but we are not talking about hours here. thanks. I'll try that. I think I have a couple of playlists that lead to nowhere. However, since the webinterface becomes unresponsive, I have no chance to look at the logfile (as that is being served through the web interface and I couldn't find any traces of it on the disk). cheers btw: as mentioned above, the platform is windows, squeezbox3 (wireless), slimserver 6.2.2 -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24085 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

trid that as well. the log file refresh stops way before the server starts to choke. so no help really. well this obviously didn't do the trick. I deleted all playlists as well as the database file. Now Slimserver is doing a rescan at 99% CPU and it's webinterface stopped responding. [slim] server database is case sensitive and that's bad. read why.
Hi, I just noticed the following: Say you have one album of one artist. Now also say for whatever reason, one of your album tag within the same album is all lower case, while the rest of the tracks are upper case. Like this: track: 1 artist: david bowie album: heroes track: 2 artist: david bowie album: HEROES Slimserver treats this as two different albums, even though it's just one. So I end up having two heroes albums by mr. bowie, one containing one song, one the rest. one could argue go fix your tags but I would reply what for, I have a computer. That being said... can this behavior be changed? if not, take this as a feature request. thanks. -- funkahdafi funkahdafi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5608 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

ceejay Wrote: Actually, I'd much rather the database did remain case sensitive, thank you very much! And yes, the answer is fix your tags :) Ceejay No offense, but may I ask why? I can't figure any reason why there should be a difference between David Bowie, david bowie and DAVID BOWIE. It's all the same artist. Or album title or whatever. Oh and on a sidenote, fixing tags might be reasonable on a small collection, but in my case it would mean to go through more than 10.000 tracks. smc2911 Wrote: Atter spending a lot of time finessing my tags (and it's not finished yet!) See, that is EXACTLY the problem: I do not WANT to spend a lot of time finessing tags. I don't have the time. I want to listen to my music, not do some geek tech stuff. My tags are all right enough to contain the right artist/album/title information. Some of them have mixed up capitalizations for which I couldn't care less. Because David Bowie IS DAVID BOWIE, and his album hErOes IS his album Heroes. Period. No matter what tech geeks will tell me about this. If a piece of software is treating the same artist or the same album as multiple artists/albums, because the caps are different on some tracks, then (and please excuse my language) this software is too stupid to follow human thinking logic. See I do not want to adapt to how computers think. I want computers to think my way and work for me. That's what they're here for. It's not the other way around (aka spending months of time fixing tags). No offense. For me as a human being with some logic in thinking, David Bowie IS the same as DAVID BOWIE, no matter what anyone tells me. And if Slimserver makes his single album Heroes into two different albums, because one of the tracks has the album tag heRoEs, then Slimserver plain and simple sucks. But I am going to check out that thread you linked to. Maybe there actually is an option to change this.
