[slim] Re: Monitoring Music Database

2007-01-28 Thread joek

I've written a checksum .bat program (5-10 lines with comments) that
uses fsum and can recursively write checksums for each file in my
directories of choice.

I usually use it when moving or copying important files. I then verify
the files after the move or copy with their checksum.

I also use it when I write DVD's, so that I could easily check the
integrity of the bits over time.

It may take some time with 100's of GB's in your case, but so what. You
don't have to sit there and watch it.

[slim] Re: tagging question

2007-01-14 Thread joek

I am having similar problems with a recently purchased Samsung T9 mp3
player. Slimserver is happy with my tagging, however the T9 is very
very picky.

I am using MP3Tag v2.37a and have been generally happy with it.
However, the T9 displays tracks alphabetically (instead of by track #)
when using ID3 v2.3 tags written by MP3Tag.

Not sure which is to blame, but I'll guess the T9. When using the v2.3
tags written by EAC and lame, then all is okay on the T9.

I am surprised how poorly some of these portable mp3 players are
implemented. Slimserver and SB3 spoiled me.

[slim] Re: Wireless bridge mode - does the router see the MAC behind it?

2006-08-10 Thread joek

In my experience and with some research I don't believe your router will
see the MAC address of the network device bridged through your SB3. I've
used multiple routers with multiple different bridge wireless clients
all with the same results.

I have a Tivo bridged through my SB3 and the router only see's the MAC
address of the SB3. The Tivo has a static IP and I have never had a
connection problem to it.

In addition, my server is connected to Netgear wireless client (bridge)
and you only see the MAC address of the wireless client bridge and not
the server.

In this case, you may have problems with a router trying to provide a
dhcp ip mapped to a specific MAC address when the device is behind the
SB3 bridge.

In small environments, there is no need to use dhcp unless you are
moving devices between networks (i.e. laptop).

[slim] Re: Easy to use back up program ?

2006-08-03 Thread joek

I use Backup Exec to backup all my systems, except for audio and video
files. For video and audio I use Delta Copy which is a gui and
scheduler front-end to the rsync command-line program. Delta Copy is
free and runs on Windows. rsync is unix based and comes with Linux, so
you have cross platform compatiability.

In my environment the mp3 library is on Linux, but Samba shared to my
Windows machine. So, I use Delta Copy to sync a copy to my Windows
system for backup. I also sync another copy to a removeable USB hard
drive, which is kept offline.

[slim] Re: Why are upgrades so painful?

2006-07-16 Thread joek

Slimserver 6.3.0 is released software and is the version you first see
from SlimDevices website. A new user will more then likey pick 6.3.0,
and may not even be aware of the history of the older versions -
especially without a little hunting around the slimdevies website. In
addition, I would imagine that SD would be recommending version 6.3.0
to any new customers.

I use many open-source software on the net and there are very good ones
and some not so good. I find some of the good ones on the internet to be
better then commerically available products. Slimserver is not bad
software, so I am not sure where the disconnect is - although I have
very strong suspicions.

I am not sure what the root cause of the problem was, other then when
v6.3.0 is oinstalled (and its latest firmware) my environment is broke.
I do not have hours to burn to try and fix the issue(s). I performed
some quick troubleshooting to look through the obvious stuff with not
luck and went back to version 6.2.1. However, I am sure it has to do
with the wireless network, which has always been solid with 6.2.1 -
everything runs excellent with 6.2.1, minus any bugs with the firmware
and software.

I ALWAYS appreciate EVERYONE'S input, help and assistance. IMO, forums
are places for people to vent, express their opinions and to ask for
assistance. If venting is noise to some, then SD may consider another
forum category specific to members that can voice their views - or is
that what General Discussion is for.

[slim] Why are upgrades so painful?

2006-07-15 Thread joek

Currently my two SB3's are down and I have no streaming music at all. I
HAD a stable environment (minus all the bugs) prior to the upgrade from
6.2.1 to 6.3.0.

I would not have expected a released version to completely kill my
entire music system. I don't have all the answers yet since I just
started troubleshooting the issues. I do know that both SB3's can't
stay connected to the server long enough to get through a song - never
had a single wireless network problem before the upgrade.

Right now I am completely frustrated with Slimdevices and all the
reasons, justifications and excuses for their workmanship, quality and
their so-called product. The $500 investment in SB3's are completely
worthless in my audio electronics.

Slimsever is stable, but I can repeatly make both my SB3's lockup by

I have never really seen SlimDevices respond to stability issues that
customers continually bring up. We all know that there are repeatable

I am running 6.2.1 and waiting for the next official release. Like you,

Linksys music bridge will make its way to BestBuy, CC, CompUSA, etc...
where Linksys has a big marketing presence. That should help boost
their sales.

I had not prior knowledge of slimdevices and came across them when
researching the Roku box. Being able to buy Roku in BestBuy had some
appeal because of the fact I could return it easily if it didn't meet
expectations. Of course the SB 30 day guarantee fixed that.

There are consumers out there that don't do research prior to buying
and therefore may not know of the existence of the SB.

BTW, I own two SB3's and am generally happy with them. IMO, I think
they are a bit pricey and the overall solution could be more robust.

There is a remote access feature of the API, but it isn't very
practical. For any practical use of most features, you would want
them on the same computer. If MMM detects a slimserver install, you
can right click the play button and choose from a list of slimserver
players. REcent versions have only worked for sending to the first
player in the list, but I believe this is fixed with the released 1.5.

 -kdf

I believe it is a requirement to have MMM and Slimserver on the same
box. Make sure you are using MMM v1.5, since I think the older version
had problems sending playlists to SB. Also, make sure you have
slimserver running before starting MMM. In MMM, right click on the play
button in gui to select SB. Could also try -slim command line option
when starting MMM.

I am running MMM v1.5a with Slimserver 6.2.1 on Linux and able to send
mixes to two SB3's without any problems. Although, I had no success
with the previous released version of MMM.

BTW, the MMM API service does not have to be running unless you want to
do the mixes from SB remote or gui. I would recommend getting other
pieces working first before running the API service.

 installation.

There is a dilemma here, to be more successful for those people who
want to install and leave alone, then it has to be a lot more solid out
of the box. No matter how many times you can point to inferior products,
that doesn't make this one better. At the same time it still has to
appeal to the community that contribute and therefore be fast moving.

I personally think the answer is to have much more solid and
well-tested releases for more general users, rather than enthusiasts.
These would be updated a lot less often and be more rigorously QA'd.
The nuts like me who like to live on the bleeding edge can carry our
with the nightlies and betas and scratch our heads when it doesn't
work. I know it's kind of like this already, but I think the builds for
people who don't want to fiddle need to be more robust. The fact that
Roku are tied to products like iTunes gives them that.

 Paul

Well put! Having a stable turnkey solution is appealing for the
consumer who simply wants to play their encoded music on their stereo.
May be not a whole lot of options and features, but easy configuration,
setup and operation.

At the same time, having the SB and slimserver pieces available for
hackers to make code changes or enhancements is appealing to a
different group of consumers.

As an example, TiVo boxes can be hacked and modifications made (voids
warranty) or you can simply enjoy the system the way it was designed.

The tests I've done show that MMM is friendly to the mp3 file when

For testing I used hexdump -C and diff to verify before and after
results from MMM analysis and fingerprinting.

[slim] Contemplating Two SB3’s

2006-01-11 Thread joek

I’ve given SB3 a serious look by reading most all of the forum messages
here and reviews sprinkled throughout the internet. I’ve looked at
other technologies and competitor products and am still drawn to the
SB3. However, I must admit I have reservations with making an
investment with the SlimDevices SB3.

I’ve configured the SlimServer and am successfully streaming audio to
SoftSqueeze. Also, I’ve successfully tested multiple SoftSqueeze
clients synchronized together. This was a wonderful way to test drive
everything prior to making the purchase.

When I take a step back and reflect on all the information I’ve
reviewed there is a concern over the wireless network operation of the
SB3. This is one of the unique features of the product – to be able to
place it anywhere you like within your wireless range. Are the wireless
network problems mentioned in these forums only a very small percentage
of the overall wireless SB3 users? I’ve read in the forums that
SlimDevices acknowledged network issues with the SB3 and they were
working on fixes. Hopefully, any issues with the SB3 can be fixed in
firmware.

Apparently, all the previous product versions have a good reputation
for reliability and stability. IMO, I would not expect to see many new
problems with the SB3 since SlimDevices claims they are essentially the
same device with new skins. Therefore, I would think the SB3 would just
continue with the same success of the SB2.

Please understand I am not here to criticize the company or the
product, but rather trying to convince myself that I will not have any
problems with using two SB3’s in my environment. I am technically
competent to deal with wireless networking issues and most other
problems. However, I would like to think that other users (not as
technically skilled) can simply use the SB3 and play music trouble
free.

SlimDevice seems to be a great company with a great product. The
company obviously stands by the SB3 with a 30 day guarantee and 1yr
parts and labor warranty. Also, Support appears responsive and helpful
in resolving problems.

Still considering two SB3’s for wireless use!

Joe :-)
