Re: [slim] Alternative Remote for SB3?

2008-01-26 Thread kolepard002
Most programmable learning remotes can do this, as can the Harmony remotes. I
use a HTM (Home Theater Master) MX-500 in my den which I have programmed with
all the slim devices remote functions.

I also have a Harmony remote (I forget the model) in the living room that will
run the SB2 there.

 Hi,

is there a remote controller thta would have the same core functins as
the original SB3 remote? One which would work for set up (left arrow,
brightness ...)? I'm not talking customized .map and .ir files, but
remote that works before SC or SN are encountered.

Re: [slim] AppleTV and SlimServer/SqueezeCenter

2008-01-17 Thread kolepard002

He said that owning films was pointless and renting them much better. He
said that didn't apply to music where people wanted to hear the same
 thing many times.

That's not quite accurate; he didn't say pointless but did say that music was
listened to many times and movies were often watched only a time or two and in
that setting a rental model makes sense.

You don't have to believe me, though; you can watch the keynote yourself.

Personally, I think a rental model for movies works fine. I rent movies now
and would rent them via Apple TV if I had one. I wish you had a week to watch
them once started instead of 24 hours, but that's me.

I buy some movies that I think are worth watching over and over, but most are
something I only want to watch once and paying a rental fee is cheaper in that
setting.

By that does not mean a music subscription service would not work.

I agree. I subscribe to Pandora and enjoy it. I know others like Rhapsody.
Those services may not enjoy the success of iTunes Music Store, but they appear
viable. I still buy most of my music, though.

 To
date none of them have proved that popular, but that's probably becuase
you have to be connected to the net and mostly have to play the music on
the PC (the Slimdevices Rhapsody serives is an exception).

Agree here, too. If it were not for my Squeezeboxen I wouldn't subscribe to
Pandora; I don't listen to mucis on my computer much.

Would you pay
$20 a month for all the music in the world if it included the ability to
copy it to your iPod? I think many would...

I wouldn't, but certainly others might.

It's also perfect for Apple becuase the security around making sure the
music on the portable player expires when the subscrciption expires

DRM certainly benefits from a closed eco-system. Still, I predict this will be
hacked so you can save movies in virtually no time. I guess we'll see.

Re: [slim] Old mac or old pc as slimserver

2007-10-15 Thread kolepard002
 Fishing for some advice

If you want a set-it and forget-it system I suggest you get whatever you know
best. Since my family use the Squeezeboxen I try to keep my slimserver running
this way as I'm the only one who can debug problems and the rest of the family
is annoyed if the music stops. :-)

If you want something for fun/exploration/learning, it sounds like you want OS
X. I've run slimserver since the days of the SLIMP3 under a variety of OS X
verions without any trouble, so i t certainly can well there.

My bias is toward OS X and BSD variants, but that's me. I spend more time on
care and feeding of the one Windows system that connects to the internet that
we have than all the other computers combined. (Though on a virtual Windows
machine that never touches the internet, I haven't had problems with it. It's
nice for the OS not to be under constant attack.)

There is one thing I miss...the KNOB. LOVE THE KNOB. Not the first time
 I've mentioned it around here

The knob is a great interface. IMHO, It's a big part of what the clickwheel is
on the iPod, and the interface is what makes the iPod my portable player of
choice.

I'm hoping the mythical SB4 has SB3 guts, 2 screens and a knob. My ears don't
justify a Transporter, but I like the dual screens and knob and I'd love to
have one in my den.

Re: [slim] Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2006-12-08 Thread kolepard002
 Larger display.

Agreed. Both Taller and Wider, making it easier for my aging eyes to read it
from 20 or 30 feet away.

Or when a call comes in to the cell phone, it'll display caller ID on
 SB4.

I believe there is a way to do this now with an appropriate plug-in and
software on the server.

My personal level of interest in at best ambivalent about the rest of the
ideas. I can see how some people would like them, but they also seem to be
outside the primary focus of the device. I'm not knocking them as ideas, but
they would not be selling points to me.

I like the concept of wireless bluetooth headphones, but my experience with
bluetooth wireless headsets on my phone is that they are spotty at best.
Definitely not hi-fi IMO, and I'm not even a real audiophile.

I'd also like to see a return to something more along the lines of the SB2 form
factor, but I know lots of people prefer the SB3 form factor, too. Again, just
personal preference on my part.

I'd still like to see a decent SB/Boombox I can carry around the house and
yard. :-)

The idea of a SB2 combined with that fancy display audio remote from logitech
has some appeal, too. But the problem with that, IMO is that I prefer to have
one universal remote. Maybe that could be combined with the Harmony remote
series in some way.

WOW, I should be paid for these ideas!

With a pony! :-)

Re: [slim] Control SB3 With Nintendo DS

2006-08-12 Thread kolepard002
I was wondering if anyone has ever thought to make a way to
control the SB via a Nintendo DS? Is it even possible? Just thought
I'd throw it out there :)

There's a cartridge--currently Japan only--with the Opera Web browser built in
to it. I'm hoping they release where I am because I'm interested in trying it.

I'm not aware of another way to do it at the moment, though perhaps someone
else knows of one.

 - tactile feedback knob

Re: [slim] Re: Linksys WRT54G + DD-WRT 23 SP1 + SB3

2006-07-23 Thread kolepard002
Version 24 sounds outstanding...having a single wireless router pushing
out two different SSIDs on different channels is brilliant.

BTW I'm not so sure 24 will be able to use different channels for the
different SSIDs. There's only one radio module, it can't operate at
 two frequencies simultaneously.

I believe it creates different virtual wireless networks with different SSIDs.
They work on the same channel. I believe this is how the Sveasoft firmware
works to do that trick as well.

Re: [slim] Re: Potential Squeezebox killer? iTunes fans might think so...

2006-02-12 Thread kolepard002
 (1) really good quality sound into my audio system and

Agreed. Although I think that for most people--and I'm not looking to start
yet another audiophile debate here--MP3s are capable of providing adequate
sound reproduction for their uses, and I'd be willing to bet that the majority
of people useing their Squeezeboxen are (1) streaming MP3s, and (2) using the
RCA jacks. I think the success of MP3 players attest to the general adequacy of
the format, despite the otherwise valid points people with more discerning ears
may make.

(2) the ability to choose music with a remote control, using a device
with a display I could read from the sofa.

Also agreed.

What would probably compete with the squeezebox market would be an iPod you
could dock, see from across the room, and control remotely.

I think a WiFi iPod could compete too, if it can streem from the iPod to a
stereo and you could just look at the display in your hand, though I tend to
think that battery life would be severly limited in this mode of use.

Re: [slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback

2006-02-05 Thread kolepard002
It looks like the server has about reached it's usful
life and they are no longer supporting the SliMP3 folks.

This is simply untrue and unfair characterization of SlimDevices and the
 community.

I agree. Up until recently (when I upgraded to SB2's as I like that form
factor better) I was using a SLIMP3 a lot. Bug fixes were still forthcoming.

Of course, someday, they will stop supporting the SLIMP3. And I will argue
that that is reasonable. You cannot support legacy hardware forever,
especially if you're a small company.

I'm willing to bet, though, that when that day comes, whatever legacy code is
needed in the slimserver to drive the SLIMP3 is left in there indefinitely, so
it will not be as though the device implodes or something.

Yes. I run it 24/7 on an old 700 MHz G3 without any trouble under 10.3.9. It
