[slim] please make volume for each favorite adjustable

2012-01-08 Thread Lee Binder

why? Because several radio stations are (much) louder than others.
iTunes offers that - very helpful feature ..

Thanks,
Lee

PS: I posted this here into General Discussion because it applies to
both, MySqueezebox.com AND any Squeezebox device. I like my computer
screen better than the one on the box (..) so I'd very much suggest
this feature to be implemented into the web interface.

[slim] forum admin, pls create entry linking to NEW Bugzilla Process right on forum list

2012-01-08 Thread Lee Binder

I had to write forum list because the title length is limited - I am
referring to the forum entry page with the overview over all forums
http://forums.slimdevices.com. It was a long way until I eventually
found http://bugs.slimdevices.com. Since NEW Bugzilla Process
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74846) is rather
'hidden' in 'General Discussion' I didn't even see and read it, until
now. That's obviously not in the interest of the topic starter ..

When entering the forums, one's browser should find the topic NEW
Bugzilla Process when searching for key words like bug, feature,
request, enhancement.
So forum admin, would you please create some kind of link on
forums.slimdevices.com with above keywords in the description below
that points to respective thread? I am 100% positive there is a way in
the forum software to either hard-link a forum entry directly to an
entry, or to add custom links onto the main entry page ..

Looking forward to your reply,
Lee Binder

Hi all,

I am in the process of upgrading my Sb1 to sb3's. I also have 2 Sb2s on
my home network. The new Sb3 has been supplied with a European 2 pin
connector, which was not much use to me in the UK...at least without an
adapter which was not supplied. (Even with an adapter which I
eventually bought, the sb3 stands out of the wall too much). All other
Sb purchases I have made have had the correct UK 3 pin plug. The box
was purchased in the Uk (from scan.co.uk) and on the box it says UK
white so I am assuming this is not an isolated problem.

What should I do?

I would have thought the answer was obvious.

Contact scan and complain, it's their responsibility to supply you you with
the product you ordered.

Alternatively, contact SlimDevices directly.

I'm not sure which would be faster.

RE: [slim] Overpriced in the UK?

2005-12-06 Thread Lee Harris
Here we go again

US price = USD
Add 30USD shipping.
Then divide by an exchange rate. Let's call it 1GBP:1.7USD.
Add VAT @ 17.5%.
Add the VAT collection fee charged by the courier. It's about a tenner.
Bingo. Same price.

No one in the UK is being shafted. It's deliberately priced at parity with
landed cost with the US. Commercial reality of:

- import/export
- freight
- VAT

Whats up with UK prices? I know some things are a bit cheaper in the states,
especially US made products, but the differnce is massive with the SB3.

The cheapest (wireless) i can find in the UK is £225, and thats from a good
suplier (Scan) who are normally very reasonable. But the RRP price in the
states (on the Slim Devices website) is £175.

Whats the deal with this? That a huge increase. Can anyone offical at Slim
Devices explain this, or are we being shafted here in the UK?

I will end up buying one anyway though. They are just so damn good (Not that
i can find one anywhere in stock anyway).

Oh you've gone and done it now guys...
I was literally about to treat myself to a new SB2, credit card at hand,

Now what am I supposed to do?!!
I like the new design - sure. Slight concern about the reclined angle, is
this adjustable? what is the angle out of interest? (yes this does matter to
me, as it could make viewing the screen difficult in my SB1's current
position..)

The next question is really to the UK distributor boys (multi-task/cooltopia
etc) Whats your stock level like on the old (god that sounds weird!)
SB2's? If I decide that I need one now - will I get SB2 or be forced to wait
for SB3?

Get up! Roku Internet radio rocks on easily By Dawn C. Chmielewski Mercury
News

Roku wants to replace your bedside clock radio with a gadget that tunes in
Internet radio stations and plays your digital music collection.

The SoundBridge Radio, which Roku announces today, is one of those rare
home-networked devices that was easy to set up and use -- just like a radio.
And it produced surprisingly rich sound quality that put it on a par with
Bose or Cambridge SoundWorks.

The SoundBridge Radio works like its traditional namesake -- it tunes in AM
and FM stations and plays music through its built-in, high-fidelity
speakers. But it also connects to your home's high-speed wireless network to
fetch and play music off your computer's hard drive or receive Internet
radio stations. Those include local stations that stream their broadcasts
online or channels that are found only on the Internet.

But Roku will have a tough time competing with the audiophile's favorite,
Bose's Wave Music System, when it comes to looks.

Roku's original networked home music player, the SoundBridge, has a
distinctive tubular design with a long LCD display that gave it a sleek,
futuristic feel. The SoundBridge Radio, on the other hand, bears an
unfortunate resemblance to those gigantic home intercoms of the '60s.

Some people will hasten to note that what's important is not how a radio
looks, but how it sounds. Still, if Roku wants a spot on my granite kitchen
counter, it better look hot, too. That's doubly true if I'm prepared to lay
out $399 for a clock radio, instead of the usual $10.

But enough about looks.

Roku recognized an opportunity in the growing popularity of Internet radio,
which now attracts about 40 million listeners. The original SoundBridge let
people listen to Internet radio or their digital music collections through
their home stereo.

Of course, not everybody wants to invest the effort in modifying their
existing stereo equipment to liberate the music from their home computers.
The SoundBridge Radio targets this less-hassle-is-more market.

It took less than five minutes to add the radio to my encrypted wireless
home network. The LCD screen prompted me to provide the most basic
information -- language, time zone, country of residence and network
password, which I did using the remote control.

After briefly restarting, the SoundBridge Radio was ready to rock. A source
button lets you select audio options: AM or FM radio, Internet radio or your
digital music collection stored on a computer's hard drive or a memory card.

I was impressed with how the SoundBridge Radio automatically found the music
tucked away inside my Mac's iTunes folder. The only limitation -- and it's a
significant one -- is one Apple Computer has imposed. The SoundBridge Radio
cannot play music purchased from Apple's iTunes Music Store, because Apple
refuses to license its software to other hardware makers. (Apple, c'mon, set
my music free.)

The SoundBridge Radio works with other digital music services, playing music
purchased or played in a continuous stream from Napster or MSN Music. It
also will play music streams from RealNetworks' Rhapsody. But given that
Apple controls 82 percent of the paid online music market, this will give
iTunes music buyers pause.

Roku added some other nice touches that are worthy of mentioning. It ships
with 50 pre-programmed Internet radio stations, including my personal
favorite, the eclectic Radio Paradise. A scan button lets you find new
stations, just as you would tune any other radio.

The radio also has six preset buttons along the top, which can be configured
to remember 18 channels. Naturally, you can store your favorite radio
stations. But what I liked was the ability to also store playlists or even
albums fetched from my computer's hard drive. For example, I stored
Coldplay's ``XY'' by simply playing the album and touching a preset. The
system conveniently and automatically assigns names to each channel, so you
don't need total recall.

One more thing: It's a clock radio with alarm, with a big snooze button. But
don't toss this across the room when you're half asleep.
You'll regret it.

As the UK distributor for Slim Devices, that Squeezebox2 as certainly been
reviewed in the past 3-6 months:

- T3
- Stuff
- What Hifi
- Sunday Times (Doors)

And you'll find Squeezebox2 in the next issue of Stuff in a feature on
devices with hidden games. From the data we've access to, SB2 outsells Roku
in the market 5x-10x.

I agree. But unfortunately, each media has its own individual
(financial) agenda and those comments may not be effective. Roku's founder
is an experienced enterpreneur and apparently knows how to sell. Roku
means 6 in Japanese and according to him (non-Japanese), this venture is
his sixth. So, we may just have to post reviews or comments on various
internet forums and/or consumer review portal. Otherwise, SD may have to
bring in venture capitalist who has capital and knows how to sell.
