Re: [slim] Sonos vs squeezebox for whole house audio

Are you worried about the discontinued service down the road. I have a

No, I just purchased a second Touch as a spare and also have a second
Duet boxed as a spare. Over the years I have used and continue to
useseveral orphaned hifi devices: 3 Carver power amps, 3 Soundstream
preamps a tuner, 6 Philips CD players, a David Hafler preamp and 6
Nakamichi cassette decks. Granted they are electronic devices not
subject to the need to have a server in the cloud or updated software
subject to the whims of Apple or Microsoft, but I've stopped waiting in
line for the latest computer operating system roll out.

My decision to stay with the Squeezebox system is based on the quality
audio performance that could seemingly be bettered at this time at about
3 times the price. I considered Sonos but the quality edge still goes to
Squeezebox (I compared Stereophile test results)

Most critical listening is of FLAC files with podcasts being #2.
Slacker radio is a distant 3rd to discover new music artists ( which
leads to CD purchases to rip to flac.

Sounds like I will not be sacrificing quality or features by going the
squeezebox route with the individual small amps at the same time saving

Squeezebox 3 (SB3), Duets or Touch devices as the signal source. Some
rooms have Home theatre as the main activity, with a Duet as the
Squeezebox source for some 2 channel audio listening, another has a
high end stereo system while others have just a SB3 and a 2 channel
power amp or stereo receiver to power separate speakers in the room.
While none of my amps are small (120 watts/ch in computer bedroom) you
can choose a small amp suitable for background listening now and later
upgrade to a more powerful amp later.

Re: [slim] Sonos vs squeezebox for whole house audio

2012-11-04 Thread musicom

You could buy a 2 channel stereo receiver from Sony or Best Buy's
Insignia for $149/$129 each respectively and a SB3 or Duet Receiver for
each room. Yes you don't need the tuner section but you get an amp with
at least 75 watts of clean power (the Sony is rated 100 watts a 1khz)
per channel, much more than the Boom and with more dynamic headroom than
the Sonos. You can do this for about half the cost of the Sonos,
maintain Squeezebox functionality, connect a set of real speakers in
enclosures if you want for the living room (which will perform better
than the ceiling speakers) and if warranted, listen to Analog local FM
radio, which is better than the same station streamed due to data
reduction mp3 streams via radio services.

Re: [slim] UE Boombox

2012-11-04 Thread musicom

Keep in mind that Bluetooth is a lossy transmission method, so you throw
all semblance of quality out the door when you use it. Sonos and
Squeezebox uses lossless transmission protocols over wi fi and are bit
accurate up to the limits of the DAC in the SB or Sonos device which can
be 24/96 for Squeezebox and 14/44.1 for Sonos.

I have all 3 and find the Touch sounds best, with a tossup between the
Duet and SB3, with a slight edge to the latter.

I agree. The Classic also had one of my ultimate control schemes that
actually was introduced with the RCA 2000 TV set (from the 1960's - the
model # was the price) - 100% operation by remote control - no knobs on
the set so you HAVE to use the remote in order to do anything with the
device.

Re: [slim] Is there an EASY way to get a classic up and running without a remote?

If you have a universal remote, the Squeezebox uses JVC DVD remote
codes. I don't know the equivalent of the brightness key, which is used
for some alternate functions, but the basic transport and 10 key/t9
functions are somewhat intuitive.

Re: [slim] Main diffs between pre-Logitech and post-Logitech hardware?

I think Erland summarized it well, but if you want to compare pre/post
Logitech acquisition you should also know that the dividing line is
rather fuzzy. The SB3 and Transporter were the last two products sold
by Slim Devices, and the Duet was the first in the SB line by Logitech.
I understand that work on the Duet, and possibly the Boom, was underway
before the acquisition, but how much (25%? 50%? 85%?) isn't widely
 known.

I've seen the Logitech Wireless DJ product, reviewed by cnet in 2006,
which has many of the Duet's features (scroll wheel, 2 part system with
controller and decoder box which connects to the stereo, which came out
post Slim Devices Acquisition in 2008, so maybe the Duet was something
being developed by Logitech and it was not a Slim Devices device.

Way back then I considered the Wireless DJ or a Roku Soundbridge to
stream Internet radio around the house, but was informed of the
Squeezebox SB3 at a high end audio show - a device which had true bit
accurate streaming (Roku resampled everything and DJ didn't support
lossless formats), FLAC support and true high fidelity (and the SB3 met
my design ideals for a hi-fi product that has no knobs, works only with
a remote control and is on all of the time).

Re: [slim] What's your favorite device for remotely controlling your Squeezebox?

2011-10-07 Thread musicom

1. Squeezebox Controller (Duet) - Instant on and quick response
2. Logitech Squeezebox iPod App - Works most like the Squeezebox
3. iPeng - Menus can jump around and multiple players show up at times
or are are controlled unintentionally.

I simply leave my amps on all of the time. Have had success for over
