It's not that they can't do it, it's just that Spotify would rather you
buy a Spotify Connect piece of hardware, where they collect a licensing

Okay, success!

I started playing JUST on the Boom. Then started streaming on the

Got in sync very quickly. Added the SB Classic. Still in sync with

Excellent. Thanks for the help.

I guess I won't be using Softsqueeze but everything else can stay in

[slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread nathan_h

I've got hardware and software players around the house.

I have iPeng and Squeezepad.

I have a heck of a time keeping everything in sync, even with all the
manual adjustments one can make on the server side.

Are there any iOS apps that will make use of the devices mic, and
listen to the out of sync players -- and send correction data to the
server and get them all in sync?

This would be a killer app!

Re: [slim] Automating Player Synchronization

2011-05-16 Thread nathan_h

I'm not sure what too many variables means, but I count two
adjustments that should be able to compensate for all the variables at
a given point in time:

Player Start Delay (ms)
Player Audio Delay (ms)

It would be great for an iOS device to measure the actual output of all
the devices, and adjust the two variables based on current actual
conditions (ie, taking into account the end result of too many
variables).

That is, other variables can likely be compensated for with these two
adjustments -- and as those other environmental factors change, if the
system isn't smart enough with the settings listed below to
self-correct, the user could walk around among the different
zones/devices and use the iOS app again, to get things back in sync.

It wouldn't be a set-and-forget operation, but it would be much faster
than typing in numbers into the web interface, hoping to dial things
in.

---

Separately, there are two user-adjustable preferences about how often
to address sync issues that the server detects:

Minimum Synchronization Adjustment (ms)
Network Packet Latency (ms)

For extra credit, the iOS device could allow adjustment of these --
either recommended values or something fancier.

If you play audio e.g. on Windows and you find that it will come out of
your speaker with half a second delay that delay may be completely
different for the next frame yout are playing.

next frame? How long is a frame? Even if I had to run the app every
time I start up whole house audio (as opposed to listening in a single

And I'll have to find a good deal on a Radio+battery, for carrying

Re: [slim] Music pauses at random points and then restarts

2010-09-05 Thread nathan_h

Happy to provide whatever info might be useful.

This is a mixed environment. Two sb receivers that are wired, one
wireless boom and one wireless sb3.

Whether one player is on or all are playing the same thing in sync
doesn't appear to change the situation.

The only solution is to play streaming services like pandora or radio
stations. But as soon as I switch back to streaming some flac or mp3
files from my server, the pauses start happening again.

The server is a win7 32 bit machine, p4 3gh with 4g ram. The CPU and
memory utilization are at less than 50 percent when the problem occurs.
Current production build of sb server.

What other details would help?

Yes after a little more exploring i guess Squeezepad is using the same
menus as my other devices --- which i think it the right thing to do.
I just need to fix my menu settings better, get rid of some stuff i
dont use etc.

The Extras menu should actually have some items for me because it does
on the web interface but doesnt in Squeezepad.

Although i like ipeng i am glad you chose the other route (sticking
with the logitech way) because it will scale better with new apps and
plugins i think. Right now Im still gettin used to how it handles

After living with the app some more i am finding the menu structure to
be a little strange. I also find the logitech menuing to be odd. And
maybe the menu here mimics what i have set up for each device in the
web interface set up options?

Setting - advanced - information has stuff like Folders and Logs but
neither does anything for me. Love to hide it.

Doesnt really make sense to me to have the App Gallery on the top level
player menu. Mayne buried deeper or even better on a separate server
settings section if there was one. Maybe that is something i can
adjust in the logitech web interface?

I have a menu item called Extras and it is empty. Is that setup error
on my part?

The My Apps option is cool but doesnt actually show all my apps. Album
review for example is not there, but is instead under Search. Maybe
thats how it is supposed to work. But it feels weird. Love to see
album review as an option at the top when i am listening to an album.

Anyway i think there are other similar thinga but this is a selection
of examples. As i say this stuff may be mostly user setup errors on
the server and not the Squeezepad app's doing.

Even though I posted all those ablum art screen shots, I didn't vote for
that in the pole. Rather, I think you're handling of album art is fine.
Sure, a pure browse through album art feature would be cool. But for
me more searching options are what I miss.

So I voted for more search power.

In fact, the killer app would be to use metadata NOT in the squeeze
server, to assist with searching. I don't know the rules about making
use of a source like all music or something, so that I could search for
all RB from the 1960s and then get a list of the albums I have that fit
that criteria according to AllMusic or something like that. Maybe
freedb has that info, and could be the source. Dunno.

I admit that's a huge bit of integration since it's not part of the
squeeze world already to draw on but one can dream!

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-07-08 Thread nathan_h

Jeff Flowerday;560412 Wrote:
I vote for performance over bling. Art is nice but too much or too

Really? I don't think they are mutually exclusive, and in those cases
where they are, one could toggle back and forth.

The big performance hit seems to be server side processing of data
about the music (caching; searching; updating) which has little to do
with bling, and lots to do with basic functionality.

So I guess the option to turn off cover art is useful for people
running with a NAS instead of a server.

-

Or maybe the quasi high end look and feel and functionality market is
not what iPeng on the iPad is, in part, going after. Which is fine. It
cannot be all things to all users.

Seems like there *is* a market for a super slick, very pretty iPad
interface for SBS that gives one the experience of a dedicated device
(think Sooloos or Sonos) but at a fraction of the cost (think $30
instead of $3000).

---

Sure, there should be other choices for an interface, or at least a way
to toggle features that suck resources (where possible, such as album
art if it's a hog; probably cannot turn off search and filter features
even though they are a hog!). But here are some ideas selected almost
at random.

I CAN (and will) do filtering (although it will be a real challenge for

 in SBS

Cool. Then searching or filtering by file type (eg FLAC) will be
possible though perhaps not by lossless.

Not sure if my server is weak (p4 3ghz single core Win7 4g RAM) but I
guess I will find out.

Hopefully there will be an option to see the results as songs list OR
as a list of albums (with covers as you may have guessed from all the
comments). I hate how on the classic interface I use the advanced
search to seek out everything by The Kills I have as flac and get back
a list of 20 songs instead of getting an option to get back a list of
just the two albums.

Re: [slim] iPad Apps for Squeezebox?

2010-07-07 Thread nathan_h

Classic is the only one that works half way for me. Ugly as sin, but
the touch interface has the problem with scrolling, resizing, etc.,
that don't work with the way I use the app.

What's the EN interface?

Filtering is one thing I've got on the roadmap for iPad (although

on the user interface but on the database query capabilities.

Does that mean you can't really implement robust filtering unless
Logitech puts it into their server code?

if the album art is a bit smaller, then i'm sure the same effect can be
achieved. The image below is much smaller than the ipad screen!

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-07-05 Thread nathan_h

One thing that gets me down about existing interfaces is an inability to
do more complex searches. For example, say I want to listen to The
Kinks, but not one of my lossy files, only a lossless file, and nothing
later than 1970. Love to see the new real estate make searches like
that possible -- like filtering results.

Version 3.x uses a different ODBC driver than version 2.x. Details on
the web site. I don't know whether this is the problem BUT if you
didn't install the newer ODBC driver, give that a try.

I too have this problem. All the tracks and albums are showing up, but
zero artists. This happened even when I uninstalled AVG so there was no
antivirus software interference.

I'm using server version 7.4.1 on a Windows 7 box.

Have you downloaded and installed the v5.1 version of the MySQL driver

I downloaded version 5.1.6 and ran the bat file (install.bat). Is
there a way to tell whether it's really installed after running that?

If you have a 64 bit version of Windows running you must download and
install the 32 bit MySQL driver. The 64 bit one will not work.

32 bit Win7 so should be okay there.

If you are running ACC on the same machine where SBS is running, do not
 configure the remote server settings.

How do I zero them out? I tried removing everything but the drive
letter won't disappear.

Excellent. That IP address works.

Unfortunately, I still get the ODBC error.

This looks great but I reviewed the HELP screen and cannot solve the

same Windows7 machine where I have Squeezecenter running. Is there a
more detailed instruction / install / troubleshoot doc/discussion?

Simplify Media does have an iPhone client. I've already got a Squeeze

The problem with Simplify is that is down rezes flac to below 200 kbps,
otherwise it's not a bad solution -- though of course it's outside the
Slim eco-system. (This downrezzing isn't just for the iphone client.
Same thing happens on the desktop.)

I'm real tempted to open up port 9000 on my router and connect remotely
that way, using the SC password. Yes, I understand it's not
particularly secure BUT if it gets compromised, what's the damage
potential? Someone else listening to my music collection?

Or?

(I've been trying the SSH option but cannot get it working under
Windows 7.)
