Re: [slim] Recommend a WAN router with good wifi range?

2015-06-07 Thread neilcoburn

I am very happy with my ASUS RT-N66U. It's dual band, which can be
useful though not that big a deal. Squeezeboxes only work on the 2.4GHz
band of course. I use the 5GHz band for iphones, ipad etc, but it
doesn't have the range of the 2.4GHz, though there's a lot less noise.

I use the router with modified firmware from
http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/. It is however quite old now, so there may
be newer models to consider.

Final point - positioning in the home is really important - I ended up
drilling holes in floorboards and running a long network cable
underneath to place the router in the middle of the house - the cable
entry point is almost never the right place for the router.

I agree wholeheartedly, Erland. And just like Squeezebox, Harmony
wasn't properly supported by Logitech both in prodect development and

Re: [slim] HELP!!! Music scan terminated unexpectedly (Directory Scan)

2010-05-24 Thread neilcoburn

I had a series of similar problems running SqueezeCenter 5.0/5.1 on
WinXP. It would crash randomly during scanning, at different stages of
the process.

As other threads have mentioned, large emebedded artwork files seemed
to be the problem. So I used a freeware program to resize all non
embedded artwork files to 300x300 pixels; and in MP3 tag, deleted all
embedded artwork. I guess this is fine as long as you have all the
unembedded artwork files.

That was me (and one or two others I think). I checked out some other
forums (e.g. remote central) and it seems that users can't set this up
themselves, but Logitech Harmony support should be able to. I'll try
sending an email to support, and report back if I get any joy. Unless

I would like to echo all that's been said. Music IP is the 'real'
genius, in that it really does create special moments in my collection
which nothing else does. Apple's Genius seems little more than a random

I agree that from a purely commercial point of view Logitech should
embrace Genius. But for the sake of the many users here who love Music
IP and see it as central to the Squeeze experience, I'd urge Logitech
to acqure it and therefore secure its future. Given their previous
business model apparently failed, Music IP must surely be very
affordable?

The level one support people are very obliging but actually can't do

You simply plug each adaptor into a spare mains socket, plug in an
ethernet cable to each adaptor too, and the data transfer (from e.g. a
squeezebox to your PC) goes through your mains wiring. They are great
for houses with lots of floors/hard walls where wireless struggles to
get through. They work really well, and I'm surprised more people don't

I'd second that. Bugs have been filed e.g.

many. The suggested fix in the bugzilla report (open and re-save the

some doesn't randomly. I've tried upgrading to SS 6.5.2, tried deleting

I'm sure this must have come up before - if so, apologies - but I just

On the N770 Skin home page, when I select a different player using the
the drop-down on the top right, it doesn't register, in that when I
then click on, say, the Artwork icon, it reverts to the previous player
(in my case, I can't control the 'Kitchen' player - it keeps reverting
to 'Lounge'). I've tried the latest nightly, and tried clearing the
Nokia cache. The skin works fine on the PC - problem is only on the
Nokia. Help anyone please?

Re: [slim] Albums are split into twos and threes

2007-02-12 Thread neilcoburn

I had the same problem recently, and it is frustrating that SlimServer
seems to have become much more sensitive to inconsistent tags recently
(since 6.5?).

As others have suggested, you can check inconsistencies using MP3Tag.
The quickest way I've found is to highlight all the tracks within the
album, and then press ALT-T. This brings up a dialogue box with a
summary of the tags. If a value is shown as [keep] it means there are
differences between tracks, and you should click and re-enter the value
(unless it's track name or number, which you obviously want to differ!)
It will also often show spurious fields and values, which you can
delete.

Re: [slim] Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

2007-02-01 Thread neilcoburn

I'm resurrecting this old post because I've got the same problem with
Slimserver splitting certain albums into two or more. I am using SS
6.5.1 from 17/01/07.

Most of the albums in question are those which I've ripped on two
different occasions (e.g. having first used iTunes to rip, I later
replaced certain tracks which skipped with EAC rips. (It's OK, I now
know that iTunes ripping is inferior!)) In some cases, the album
therefore comprises some MP3s, and some AAC/MP4s. But should this
really matter?

So, there are reasons why SS might split them, but the tag variables
which I would expect to matter (i.e. Artist and Album) are consistent -
I checked this with mp3tag. All the directory trees are correct, with no
splits across Windows directories.

My question is, in order to prevent this problem, do I really have to
have completely consistent tags across all tracks within an album, and
consistent file formats too? Other programs I use like MusicIP and
iTunes don't spilt albums like this.

Incidentally, I use MusicIP with SS, and run Windows XP Pro. To prevent
any conflicts or duplication, I leave the music directory blank, and
although I use iTunes for other purposes, within SS I've selected 'do
not use iTunes'.

[slim] Re: MusicMagic causing errors during slimserver scan

2006-10-20 Thread neilcoburn

This sounds fairly normal to me. My library of c. 6,000 songs took about
4 days. If a specific song is on the MM database it takes 10-20
seconds. If it can't find it, it analyses it from scratch, which should
take about the length of the song, plus a bit. So if your tastes are
esoteric, it can take a long time. 25 minutes does sound a lot,
however - do you have a lot of classical stuff? If so, you might want
to exclude classical and other genres you won't want in a mix (I used
to get the odd children's song cropping up in a mix, which really
spoiled the moment, so I filter those out). You can define these in
File Exclusions.

In my opinion all of this is really worth the wait - it will completely
change the way you listen to music, and you'll rediscover lost gems in
your collection.

Harmony remotes can learn any IR codes if they are not already on their

orginal remote. You can also add extra commands to Harmony

I agree - having moved house, it was no longer practical to have my
wireless router and the PC running SlimServer in the same room, so I
tried to run it wirelessly, with constant problems. My solution was to
replace the wireless from PC to router with a new 85mps Homeplug set-up
(which sends ethernet via the mains wiring), and it works really well.
Not a cheap solution, but solidly reliable.

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 questions....

2006-04-12 Thread neilcoburn

I had a similar problem, which unfortunately was the start of a
completely faulty screen - the display went completely white,
permanently. I hope this doesn't happen to you, especially as getting
it collected for repair took about 25 different phone calls to
different parts of Nokia - the service was abysmal. I bought it from
Nokia Online shop - hopefully you won't have as much trouble if you do
need to return it.

I was also wondering about Music Magic support - I love the 770 and the
skin, but use Music Magic a lot. Ben, is Music Magic support feasible
in the near future?

[slim] Re: Slightly different wireless network problem!

2006-04-04 Thread neilcoburn

Thanks, Abdomen, but I have already done this, suspecting the dynamic
addressing wasn't helping. I assigned it 192.168.2.99 to make sure
there's no conflicts. I've also tried the dreaded Belkin support line,
who told me to change the broadcast channel. I used Netstumbler and I'm
using a clear channel as far as I can tell. Any other thoughts?

[slim] Slightly different wireless network problem!

2006-04-04 Thread neilcoburn

I realise there are loads of threads re network problems, though these
all seem to refer to problems of Squeezeboxes connecting wirelessly to
routers/access points.

I have a slightly different issue. Since moving house, the PC running
Slimserver is a long way from my incoming internet connection so I've
added a wireless card to the PC so it can connect to the router
wirelessly. The signal strength is 'excellent, 54 Mbps', but it still
loses the connection a few times a day. It usually reconnects by
itself, but about once a day needs me to right-click and select
'repair'. My question is, is this the best I can hope for from a
wireless connection, or is it reasonable to expect this set-up to stay
connected for many hours and days? If these drop-outs are inevitable,
I'll invest in a Homeplug set up. Any thoughts welcome!

[slim] Re: Recommended UK wireless ADSL routers?

2006-03-21 Thread neilcoburn

Reading all these posts, it strikes me that the performance of wireless
routers in general is down to luck more than anything else! I've had
good performance in the past with my Belkin F5D6231uk4 (admittedly with
an access point as a range extender), but I've just moved house and it's
not working at all well. I'm considering buying a Homeplug/devolo kit
to send ethernet via the mains electricity. Does anyone have any
experience of this?

Thanks for the tip re JHymn, though the website says it doesn't work
with music purchased using iTunes 6.0 onwards (and you now have to use
6.0 to buy stuff)

... so the workaround is to burn them to a CD in iTunes, and then re-rip
them as normal AAC files which Slimserver can use.

[slim] Re: Launching MusicMagic at startup

2005-11-04 Thread neilcoburn

I've been running MMM as a service using AppToService in Windows XP and
it works really well, except that I've run into a problem after adding
new music to my library. Slimserver (6.2) doesn't seem to pick up the
newly analysed songs (though they are definitely there in the MMM GUI),
and reverts to the old MMM database (it shows the new songs, but not the
mm symbol next to it). Hopefully I don't need to repeat the whole
installation cycle again - can anyone suggest how to get Slimserver
picking up the new songs?

Slimserver supports .M4A format, not other AACs. The standard workaround
is to burn it to a disk in iTunes and re-rip it.

[slim] Re: Alien BBC Garbled Sound

2005-10-11 Thread neilcoburn

I'm still having trouble using Neil's fixed Mplayer in Windows. The SB
just freezes, usually showing 'connecting' on screen, sometimes getting
past that to 'now playing [programme]' but then freezing with no audio.
I then have to power cycle the Squeezebox. I've tried rebooting after
updating mplayer, and tried downloading the zip file again and doing
the whole process again. Any thoughts?

[slim] Re: Okay, maybe it's time to call it a day...

2005-09-23 Thread neilcoburn

Well, I've got a cheap Belkin wireless router (F5D7230uk4) and it works
fine with 2 xSB2s. I have a Belkin Access Point to boost the signal
upstairs. I had an initial problem with dropouts when using 128 Bit
WEP encryption which was solved when I switched to 64 bit.

I'm completely non-techie, and everything, including Slimserver, works
perfectly and has done since 6.1 was released (before that, my only
real gripe was slow library rescans, but now it's very quick). The PC
(Windows XP) is nothing special, and is often multi-tasking while I'm
listening to my Squeezeboxes.

So I guess what I'm saying is that Slim Devices have put together a
brilliant, low cost package for multi-room audio. And if it weren't for
the 'enthusiastic amateurs' or whatever they've been called, we wouldn't
have great extra features like Alien BBC.
