Re: [slim] Transporter Not Playing

I don't know what your setup is, but the Transporter doesn't pass
through digital signals (i.e. signals from a digital input will only be
output to the analog outputs).

Ouch!!

People would have bought it just for a working display and the knob.

Wait a minute... I was under the impression that the Aries Mini could
function as a Squeezebox client. But as I read about it, I don't see any
mention of that. Since it's running Linux, I suppose it could be done
with some tinkering, but if the product doesn't function natively as a
Squeezebox, how in the world can it be viewed as Squeezebox replacement?

Hence my comment. There are all kinds of devices or combination of
devices that can get a song from a hard drive to your speakers; but are
they able to match the user interface of LMS?

I've resigned myself to having to use some form of wireless device in
the future, as having a device with a display just doesn't seem in the
cards.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox touch or external DAC ?

800 Euros is ridiculous. I paid $300 CDN earlier this year for one on
Canuck Audio Mart.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on ebay, UK / Europe audio mart, what ever
online sites you have over there until you can find one at a reasonable
price.

As for the original question, I even run my Transporter through a DAC
(Audio-gd Master 7). If you find a really good DAC you can keep it for
a long time and just switch out various components.

Search around a bit. I know they offer streams for WMP and a few
others. I haven't looked into it much since I can receive it live via

Uncompressed signal. I used it to demo my excess tuners and receivers

but I put it on once in a while just to remind myself what FM was like

The main advantage I find to old LP's is their superior mastering. They
played fewer tricks in the old days and the CD's and even the remastered
LP's have suffered since. Play the original Vanda/Young AC/DC albums
versus CD vs Digital Remastered Lp's for an example of what I am
talking about.

You mean you have to go from USB to RCA Coax?

There are a number of devices that will do that, including the Hagerman
HagUSB:

They also do a USB to AES/EBU version.

I don't know about Mac, but the HagUSB will set up automatically in XP.
You really don't have to do much of anything.

Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada

2007-11-25 Thread riffer

I will concede that I may be the luckiest shipper in the world. I have
never had a problem with UPS.

Canada Post on the other hand:

No attempt to deliver/ falsified notices of delivery attempts, so I
have to pick it up myself.

No attempt to deliver/no falsified notification of attempt to deliver
resulted in something being sent back to the US.

Our local postal outlet dropped the franchise because they spent all
their time handling parcels that the post office never attempted to
deliver. The lineups got so bad that they where interfering with
normal store traffic.

The tracking for Canada Post/USPS is a joke, if the parcel tracks at
all.

Three weeks in customs versus three hours. etc. etc etc.

As for the UPS Brokerage fee. If you don't ship ground then there is
no brokerage fee. If Ground is your only choice, push the numbers and
pick the supplier with the lowest all-in cost. If it's to my
advantage, I use UPS ground.

Still, one of the funniest threads I read a few years ago was some guy
who was indignant about UPS, so he put the supplier through hoops to
send it Fedex Ground. Had a good laugh about that one.

One bit of advice. If you are dealing with a local dealer, make sure
you negotiate. I did so on my Transporter and got a very good deal.

Re: [slim] Pricing and Exchange Rates

So? The Canadian dollar is now worth $1.07 US. But prices haven't
changed here, we still pay a $5 - $15 premium for books, cards and
magazines, a ~40% premium for audio equipment, and a car costs about
 $10 000 more here.

It turns out that the exchange rate has very little to do with pricing.
Things are priced at what the manufacturer feels the market will bear.
That doesn't make it right, but that's how it is. Europe is more
expensive to do business in than the U.S. due to taxes and bureaucracy
 - so is Canada.

Yes, so true. I love the big hubub here in Canada over this. When the
exchange rate was 1.5 and everything was priced at 1.7x the US price, no
one complained because they where too dumb to do simple math :)

Same with the cars. The cars being overpriced has been known for
years. There is a (as of this morning) 539 page thread on redflagdeals
that started in June 2006 on this subject.

Re: [slim] Dedicated PC - current thoughts on specs?

2007-11-06 Thread riffer

I'm running Slimserver on a Celeron 600 with 512KB of RAM.

The main problem is that the drives churn if I run the web application
which, along with slim tray, java, etc. use up too much ram. Since I
rarely use the web ap, this isn't a big problem. In other words, if my
motherboard could take more ram, I would install it. Otherwise, a
pretty minimal set-up is all that is required.
