[slim] SB Classic ( sentral third of the screen brighter the left/right) ?

2012-09-17 Thread sl789

Hi all !

I have 2 sb classic for many years ( 6 or 7) which have been worked
flawlessly all this time.
Couple of days ago, I paid attention, that on one of them a cehtral
third on the screen is a little brighter
then left and right thirds ( I am not sure it's exactly thirds , look
like one). It doesn't bother me , but I wonder if it's a sign that
screen might die soon.

Has anybody else expereinced similar problem ?
Is it software/hardware related ?
Has anybody managed to get spare screen and change it ( I hope it will
not come to it though)

[slim] Warning ! squeezeslave-7.5.1-9211_all.deb caused problems all over Ubuntu 10.10

2011-04-26 Thread sl789

I did a colossal mistake installing squeezeplay_7.5.1-9211_all.deb on
Ubuntu 10.10.
Suddenly, I started having problems all over the OS in absolutely
unexpected places (for example I couldn't play .avi files in Movie
Player, applications menu got screwed etc.).
Adter I purge this package everything returned to normal.

As an added benefit the package itself didn't work.

Beware

2011-04-26 Thread sl789

Downoladed from nightly builds

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/index.php?ver=7.5

SqueezePlay: Debian Installer Package squeezeplay_7.5.1~9211_all.deb
14.76 MBApril 25 2011 04:08

lua libraries was installed before.

tried to invoke as

/opt/squeezeplay/bin/jive

(I run
sudo ldconfig /opt/squeezeplay/lib
before invocation as recommended in another thread)

Got completely garbled unreadable screen
Looks like the same text was written over multiple times.

In addition, the package caused the problems all over OS
(Movie player stopped working etc).

After purging the package everything returned to normal.
I searched thru threads and found at least one other person describing
similar problem ( garbled screen ).

I run Ubuntu 10.10 on Dell XPS 410 for many months without problems at
all.
squeezebox server 7.5.4 works flawlessly with two SB3 boxes ( 7.5.2
worked great as well.) I briefly installed 7.5.3 but downgraded back to
7.5.2 due to multiple problems and waited until 7.5.4

Hi bpa !

Thanks for your help.
I've just installed Softsqueeze as a plug-in and restarted the server.

The problem is that it plays certian files with increasing speed, so
they sounds very high-pitched
Any insights why it happens ?

Hi bpa !

Thanks for your help. I've installed softsqueeze as a separate
application using your instructions and it installed and works OK (the
increaded speed issue remains though) . Regarding the files who plays
with increased speed, those a flacs (for now I don't see any common
denominator among them)

There is another problem as well. A flac file start playing OK and
after a minute or saw it starts stuttering

I've installed BBCiPlayer plugin so there is a directory now

( I use Ubuntu ).

Then I created directory BBCiPlayerExtra under Plugins

/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/BBCiPlayerExtra

and unzipped files there, restarted the server, but I can't see
Archives menu when I click on BBCiPlayer in the squeezebox (it appears
under

There is no menu item BBCiPlayerExtra.

Where it should be - directly under Home or under Home-Extra ?

I can't find it.

[slim] Order of playing ntracks in an album - by track numbers or title names ?

2008-04-21 Thread sl789

Hi !

I have three CDs ripped into MP3 each as a separate album, which I
originally tagged so each title as well as file name starts with track
number like

01 a1
02 b1
03 c1

etc

Yesterday I used mp3tag to merge 3 albums into one album and then I
renumerated the track numbers only (not titles and filenames) so now
the desired order of playing (by the track number )is

01 a1 (from first album)
02 b1 (from first album)
...
10 x1 (from first album)
01 a2 (from second album)

But when I go to album and hit play,
SC7 is playing them in the order of TITLE NAMES like

01 a1 (from first album
01 a2 (from second album)
01 a3 (from third album
.

03 c1 (from first album)
03 c2 (from second album)

I think the order of playing tracks in a single albums should be by
track numbers not title names - am I wrong ?

Is it a bug in SC7 or I need also changes title names ?

Hi Snarlidwarf !

I have not set disc numbers (there is no standard field with this name
in mp3 tag). There is a single composition (Opera) which spans all 3
original CD since it was just to big to fit a single one. I am going to
change the titles/filenames to include track number at the beginning to
solve the problem.

I thought it was a bug in SC7, but looks like it was an intention

[slim] Slimserver disconnection problems

2008-02-24 Thread sl789

I am very surprised (to say the least) that multiple participants
(me included) which reported disconnection problems got no response
from SlimDevices people on this forum. I checked quite a few messages
which describe those problems and usually the only response are from
other participants advising to turn on anti-virus software , assign
static IP etc.

May be I missed it but I couldn't find a single answer from Slim
Devices person which is very disappointing. Month or so ago I asked if
it's possible to develop/enable a connectin log - letter below (feature
that some other music servers have, so it's not impossible to develop),
but got no answer.

May be somebody from SlimDevices would step in and adress these
disconnection issues on the forum ?

-

Hi !

I have problems with my two SB3 sometimes got disconnected from
SlimServer (but not from SqueezeNetwork). Most likely it's a problem
with my old laptop I use as a file server - I start to suspect
additional security software I run on it - SpySweeper from Webroot
might somehow cause it or Norton AntiVirus or ZoneAlarm firewall, but I
don't know for sure (since it live it open 24/7 I would like to have
some protection on it)

I was wondering if any tool/plugin exists in or outside of SlimServer
which can log the history of SBs connections (in particular if
connections was interrupted - when it happen and possible reason).

If not, may be somebody from developers can give an estimate based on
SS knowledge - if it's possible to develop at all and how difficult it
might be.

May be they already have such a tool but for internal purposes of
debugging/testing ?

If so may be it's possible to get it and use it ?

Re: [slim] Help needed : SB3 disconnect from SlimServer

2008-02-08 Thread sl789

Hi !

First, thanks a lot for advices.

I've just checked DHCP settings on D-Link DI-624
(BTW I have set static DHCP where fixed IP is assigned to each MAC).
The lease time is 1 week (maximum allowed by setting) , but I'll check
next time. I don't think it's a problem since SqueezeNetwork connection
is fine.

Regarding laptop connectivity - I'll check next time when disconnect
happens, but let's assume it loses connectivity for some reason and
then it restored, I think players will reconnect automatically.

The fact is that when I see players are disconnected - all I need to do
is to stop and then start SlimServer on the laptop - after it players
reconnect by themselves - I don't need to do anything.

I was wondering if any tool/plugin exists in or outside of SlimServer
which can allow to see the log/history of SBs connections (in
particular if connections was interrupted - when it happen and possible
reason).

If not may be somebody from developers can give an estimate based on SS

[slim] Help needed : SB3 disconnect from SlimServer

2008-02-07 Thread sl789

Hi all !

Maybe somebody can help/explian the following problem :

I has an old Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop which I upgraded long time ago
with WinXP SP2. Since this laptop is heavy, I am now using it as music
server : I have the latest version of SlimServer (6.5.4) installed on
it and I have to SB3 - 1 is connected via wire and second wirelessly to
my D-Link wireless router/switch.

It works fine - streaming is no problems, browsing is quick - I run it
24/7

The only problem is that once a day or once every 2 days BOTH sb3 got
disconnected from SlimServer (SqueezeNetwork works fine on both and
doesn't get disconnected).

When both Sb3 are disconnected I check SlimServer on the laptop and
it's running fine. I try to reconnect SB3 manually - they both failed

The only way to get connection back is to stop and then start
SlimServer again ( I don't need to exit it). After it restarts both Sb3
reconnect on it's own (until next time disconnection)

Any ideas what I need to check and if everybody else experinced similar
problem ?

Thanks in advance

[slim] Need help (Harmony 890 / JVC DVD buttons)

2007-12-19 Thread sl789

Hi all !

I have to SB3 which I control using Logitech Harmony 890 universal
remote, so sometimes I turn on 2 of them at the same time.

To avoid this, I'll set one to accept only original SB3 remote codes
and the second to accept only JVC DVD codes.

When I programed Harmony 890 I put some JVC model number there (it was
given as an example) since I don't own any JVC DVD player.

I can control basic functions now , like power on/off etc, but how I
control SB3 specific functions like add/size/brightness etc ?

Anybody has recommendations about specific DVD model number I need to
put, and which buttons correspondes to which SB3 functions ?

Thanks a lot in advance

[slim] Re: I've just called customer service - no way to get black faceplate separartely

2006-12-08 Thread sl789

When I've started this thread the last of my intention was to bash SD.
I've found both their product (sb3 in my case) and customer service
outstanding at least, really on of the very best I ever encountered

I do understand the reasons while they reluctant to offer it and I only
wanted to try and persuade them there is enough people interested, it
might be a business point for them to do so (I also suggested in this
case, every purchaser will sign some sort of waiver).

If they decide not to do it, it's perfectly fine with me since after
all it's a minor cosmetic point. It never was promised and to criticize
them for not doing it is baseless and unfair.

To Rhapsody !

Regarding opening SB3 - I've already did it when I needed to change
faceplate on one of my two SB3 when it got detached and SD sent me
replacement. It was very simple operation.

I, personally, ready to electronically sign waiver during purchase (if
it's online from SD site) which release them from any responsibility or
alternatively fax the signed waiver form

Would you consider this option and sell plates then ?

components are in black). May be if it's going to be enough demand, SD
will be selling those plates separately ?

2006-07-11 Thread sl789

I've recently got a free Rhapsody trial and I am enjoing it very much -
work flawlessly with SB3.

One slight problem is the need to perform browsing using computer.
Is it possible at all to have a plugin/feature to perform
browsing/streaming via SB3 or there is some fundamental limitation ?

[slim] Re: I am sure this issue was raised thousends times ...

2006-06-11 Thread sl789

Ceejay, thanks a lot for your reply.

I do have wireless network at home (based on D-Link wireless router)
and I also have Palm T|X with built in Wi-Fi which works with it
flawlessly.

Is it possible to to control slimserver/squeezenetwork by using it ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. I do agree it's most likely not easy (don't know if its not easy
for some objective technical reasons or it was specifically designed
not to be easy, since obviously this feature would allow to have only
one SB per house rather then one per location as it now) So that, I
don't beleive it will be on any future versions, regardless how many
people will ask for it, since it's counterproductive for sales

A lot of digital media players have no screen and rely on video output
to use with TV so I guess it's not a rocket science to engineer in
principal

[slim] Re: I am sure this issue was raised thousends times ...

2006-06-11 Thread sl789

JJZolx I wish it would be possible to have a shadow screen for
fraction of the price which will be syncronised with SB3 /and/or
slimserver. I agree it would solve the problem and would be the best
solution.

I am not thrilled to operate TV each time I need to browse or see the
name of song/artis played by one of internet radio station using
squeezebox.

But for business reasons it's higly unlikely that option of additional
remote screen would be on market from slimdevices.

Using Wi-Fi PDA as remote (sort of Sonos type remote) - I don't know if
there is an application which allow it and it's not as convinient
because each time you want to see what's playing you need to turn it
on, of course no plug-ins etc

It's not even the cost of second SB3 (while also a factor) but
stupidity of running RCA wires all the way bac to amp.

Ceejay, thanks for clarification and pointer to SlimRemote

I sort of learned to control my collection on computer on blind, but
I'll try this. Sadly, Where it's really needed is for squeezenetwork
and as you mention there is no solution for it (except second SB3 of
course), may be they'll drop prices :-)

[slim] Re: I am sure this issue was raised thousends times ...

2006-06-11 Thread sl789

Hi Azinck3 !

Used uour advice pointing my Palm T|X to the address- works like a
breeze. Thanks a lot for advice.

Those forums are as best as SB3 itself regarding quality of help and
speed of response.

Regarding ideal solution which I would like to see (I know ideal is
unreachable) is multizone (2 or 3 zones) , centrally located SB with no
screen, just box, connected to multizone amp and separate wireless
screen modules which you can place in different locations to control
different zones on SB. Sort of like multiline, multihandset phone.

As one of participants mentioned there is no need to operate high
quality amp to listen to BBC news enogh just a pair of powered speaker.
It's true - for low quality Internet stream, but SB3 also have
capability for high quality playback and to enjoy it on need a decen
amp and speakers

[slim] Re: I am sure this issue was raised thousends times ...

2006-06-11 Thread sl789

Azinck3, you might be right about multizone issue, digital content is
much easier to distribute and there is no degradation in quality over
distance. Running speaker/s-video wires it's indeed a pain and if they
are of decent quality it might cost so much it's OK buy just another
source/sources instead.

I still don't know cost-wise what is cheaper - 1 high quality multizone
amp like Denon 5805 with 4 zones or 4 decent single zone amps.

When I bought my Onkyo/Integra DTR-7.4 with second zone couple of years
ago
I thought about one box solution. I am not sure if I do the same now -
it's a good quality amp and I like it but may be now after those second
zone issues (BTW there is no digital signal to Zone 2) I would consider
two separate amp.

[slim] I am sure this issue was raised thousends times ...

2006-06-10 Thread sl789

Is it possible to modify SB3 to shadow it's screen output on TV screen
?

I do realize that not having video output on SB3 boosts the sales (one
need to by unit for each room rather then plug it into multizone amp)
so slimdevices as a company might be not happy with it and that's why
it's not on the unit.

I have 2 Zones amplifier, speakers, TV set and infrared extender in
the bedroom.
I very much enjoy my SB3, but kind of reluctant to shed another 300$
for second unit and run wires all the way back to amp.

It's possible of course to have some control of SB3 without seeing the
screen using numbers on keypad (that's what I am doing now) but it's
limited to using faworites and music files stored on computer and one
can't browse internet radio stations

Strangely, after I did full rescan, problem disappeared and it plays
normally now. After I encoded it with FLAC, it appears immediately in
Browse Music, so I didn't need to rescan initially.

[slim] FLAC playback problem, any opinion ?

2006-06-06 Thread sl789

Hi all !

I used EAC and then FLAC (version 112a) to encode a classic CD
(Murray Perahia - Bach Keybord concerto #3,5,6,7)

One of the flac files has playback problem both on my SB3 and soft
squeeze (it plays for 5 minutes of total 7 then jump to next part)

It plays perfectly OK on Winamp.

I am new to Flac and wonder if somebody experienced simular problems
with other CDs. Is it a way to check flac file correctness ?

I have the latest version of firmware (bought SB3 2 weeks ago and
upgraded firmware immediately)

[slim] any recommendation for Hard Drive Enclosure

2006-05-27 Thread sl789

Hi All !

I was wandering if anybody can recommend good 3.5 hard drive enclosure
which also would work with Linux.

I would like to put my 800CD to FLAC (just bought SB3). I use
slimserver on my laptop which works perfectly, but I have only 60G
drive. So I am thinking about bying FireWire/USB2 enclosure and
Internal harddrive 300/400G capacity to keep it.

In the future I hope to use it with this little Linksys NAS whicg can
ran slimserver (since Linksys NAS) run Linux I think enclosure shoud
have linux driver

I checked one (MadDog FireWire/USB2.0) but it doesn't compatibel with
Linux

I'll appreciate advices
