The big VU's are a screensaver. Go to screensavers, saver when playing, analog VU. I love the mini, I just wish it had a 3.5 disk drive. The mini would be a bit less mini, but a whole lot more mini than a mini and an external HD. Wired has a place, that's for sure. I never do online banking/paypal etc via wireless. Also (if I recall correctly) all wireless devices share the 54 mbits. where wired going through a switch is 100 mbits device to device. So even if both systems were 54 mbits, the wired one will be higher performance if there are more than two devices talking amongst themselves. IE wireless is more of a HUB concept. good point on the SSL, given the wireless link is encrypted, it's really not an issue. On the Sonos system, it doesn't strike me as particularly high-end, and given it's pricetag, I suspect you may be able to do better with a squeezebox and an inexpensive amplifier (or even a nice antique tube amp). The lack of a server does strike me as a very useful thing for a lot of consumers, but this thing still needs a computer, so what's the difference? Maybe this is covered somewhere else, but it seems to me that the squeezebox is really half a product. I love what it is and what it can do, but it strikes me that for many consumers, the lack of a simple plug and play server box is a serious hurdle. Does slim have plans to market a simple NAS box or similar to compliment the squeezebox? It strikes me as a natural. I'd love to see something like the Kurobox (with more processing juice). It could be an embedded linux box with slimserver built in, and a sizable hard drive (or a pair). With samba running, it would be super easy for the average joe to add music etc. It could be totally turn-key for the average user and configurable for the advanced guy. [slim] Re: Potential Squeezebox killer? iTunes fans might think so...
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21033 Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a network music player? - Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday! - No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands! - Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely... 802.11 is HUGE for the iPOD and pretty meaningless for Squeezebox competition. I'd love wireless for my iPOD: I have a Dension mount in my Tacoma where the iPOD always lives (either in the truck, miata, or at work). To sync it up when I change music or download podcasts (IT conversations is great), I have to walk out to the garage and grab the iPOD and bring it to the computer and drop it in the cradle. IF it had 802.11, then whenever I drive into the garage, my iPOD syncs, no more bringing it to the computer for a meeting of the minds. The Squeezebox and the iPOD use similar enabling technologies, to provide the same product, but in different ways for different uses. To me, they are complimentary. Even the airport express is complimentary, not really a replacement. [slim] Re: Let reality settle
I'd consider changing encoded formats that you stream to your box. From all I've read transcoding on the server side is a losing proposition. Aside from not being able to rewind and fast forward, you are pounding the snot out of your server. I am streaming files to my SB3 with a kurobox, which is a 166 MHz processor with 64 meg of ram, nothing compared to your older iMAC. My SB3 plays flac files flawlessly and the server load is quite low. Same deal with MP3's. I have a squeezebox and an iPOD and for me the best solution is to rip all my CD's to FLAC (and put the CD's away in boxes), and then transcode from FLAC to MP3 as needed. I've got a directory of all my FLAC files which the slimserver uses, and then all those songs are duplicated as MP3's on my mac which iTunes manages. It's less than ideal, but I can use a small quiet server to store computer backups, and serve my music. [slim] Re: Slimbox for travellers
I've got a pair of tivoli radios, a radio one and the stereo one (radio 2 I think). I'm not too impressed with the sound quality. I have a Boston Acoustics clock radio on my nightstand, and it sounds a whole lot better to my ears. No line in on the boston radio though. For travel, I use my iPOD with a set of etymotic research headphones, and it's hard to beat. Small size and the earphones block out the airplane noise. On my electrostatic speaks, I can hear the difference between high bit rate VBR lame and either flac or the original CD, but the differences are surprisingly small. Fraunhoffer vs flac is much more obvious. This arguement is much like TIFF vs low compression JPEG, there are differences, but it takes some scrutinizing to see it. I use lame encoded MP3's on my pod, and based on my looking, there is really no other portable player out there of any merit. I use MP3's rather than lossless on the pod because I'd rather than a larger music library rather than a smaller one. I never know what I'll be in the mood for. IF my pod didn't have enough space for enough music, I'd compress more, rather than suffer with a smaller library especially when traveling. [slim] Re: Possible Enhancement - (slight) support for multiple file format music libraries
I'm actually really interested in this as well. My wife and I both have iPODs and I've ripped my entire 800 CD's to MP3's and I'm planning on doing it again to FLAC and putting my CD's away in the closet rather than keeping them on shelves. The squeezebox is now going to be a key component in my digital audio portion of my stereo. So I would like to be able to organize my music and deal with artists etc and be able to download the MP3 versions to our ipods, and only play FLAC versions to the squeezebox. So far, my mental solution is to keep two separate libraries and manage them independently. Ideally, I'd like to have the music I typically enjoy ripped to FLAC for the squeezebox, and more casual music only ripped to MP3 and be able to see the MP3 library as well. If there is a linking between libraries to be able to play MP3's that don't have a FLAC version, then the SB system needs to be smart enough to play the FLAC file if there are both a FLAC and an MP3. I suspect that all this if then stuff is beating a dead horse and I should always rip to FLAC and then re-rip from flac to MP3. The FLAC data is HUGE compared to the MP3 data, and I will always have duplicate libraries. I do think this is an issue for many ipod carrying audiophiles. Or at least semi-audiophiles. I am willing to take a little hit in sound quality to have a huge library on the pod, but not for the home stereo. So how are you others handling both FLAC and MP3 versions of the same music?
