That is actually a good idea. As memory stick prices go down, you can
buy more of them.

I have been playing around with this for a while, and have given it up.
First of all, my FLAC collection is now around 500GB and I don't need
all of at at all times.

When I bring my music to parties etc. I have mp3 copies on a portable
hard disk and use a laptop as interface -the sound systems are so
cheesy that mp3 at vbr 0 (highest quality) is good enough.

When I am on the road I use a Sandisk Sansa e260 (4GB). About 2.5GB is
miscellaneous easy listening and 80's hit's and rest is reserved for
new music. Also mp3 at vbr0.

I also have a iAudio X5, but it is too bulky when I need a portable
player, and there isn't space enough for all I the nusic I want to
carry with me.

The numbers for 3.5" disks are way out. I did a quick check on the net
and I found that the drives used between 10W and 15W when seeking.

A modern 3.5" disk will use 0.5/1.0A (roughly) for 5/12V. Not
0.802/2.5A as this site is using.

2006-08-02 Thread tomsi42

I am also thinking about using a NAS instead of a dedicated server.

Choice 1.
Synology DS106.
Samsung 250GB disk.

Choice 2.
Via CN1000G mini-ITX mainboard.
512MB stick of memory.
Morex Venus 668 case (also known as 6688 Flex-ATX case).
Samsung 250GB disk.

Choice 2 is NOK 417 more expensive, but the CPU is way more powerful,
and I get choose the OS.

Adding a second disk, evens it out as choice 2 needs an extra case.

Adding a third disk is possible with choice 2, but not choice 1.

Neither of these choices are fanless though.

If you are thinking about the environment, a second hand computer is a
good choice as it extends it lifespan. There are environmental impacts
both on creating a computer as well as throwing it away.

[slim] Re: What makes the Transporter worth $1700 (or more) more than the SB3

2006-07-29 Thread tomsi42

Yes, I believe that the transporter is worth $1700 more.

The reasoning behind this claim is this: My experience with hi-fi is
that to get a real improvement in sound quality is to replace the unit
in question with something that cost ten times as the old one.

Based on this theory (should that be hypothesis?), the transporter
should actually cost $3000, so at $2000, it is in fact cheap.

I know that this is a bold statement; it based on my own experience:
replacing a $200 CD pleaer with a $250 one,

No problems with that.

I am not sure how to create the slicker UI though. Should it be a fancy
remote (like Sonos), a software frontend (like moose, but OS agnostic)
or implemented in the player itself ? In an ideal world it would be all
of them.

OS Portability is a major issue for many people. So for the server
itself, I find the current model find.

Another nice feature of the slimserver design is that it is possible to
add different front ends to it.

I will venture a guess that it is a more fancy/sexy/nice frontend that
most want. Which isn't slimserver's job...

Having listened to my SB3 with some high end Electrocompaniet kit, I
will agree that it is good (I used a linear PSU), especially at the
price.

But there are always room for improvements, and that gets expensive
fast. This unit has balanced outputs, world clock input, clean power
supply and more. Stuff that the audiophiles have been pining for in
this forum. The price seems right to me.

I want one - so I have to start saving ;)

Set this to enabled. You will then see the artist and avoid damage to

At 90k, it is a good question if we only talk about bought CD's. I have
bought about 1300 CD's in 20 years, that's about 18500 songs. If I had
enough money, I would haved topped out at about 2500 cd's.

But I know of people who are able to record concerts legally, and there
are also free (and legal) stuff out there, so should be possible to
build a collection that large.

Apparently the SB turns of Wifi.

It is something with your tags.

I see the same. But only with artists that have accented characters in
them. eg. The norwegian artist Magnus Grønneberg. I suspect a mix of
UTF-8 and iso8859.

Will do. As your plugin does what I wanted, will wrap up this thread.
Will post my results on the plugin thread.

Thanks for the tip! I will look into this. I guess it would be quite
easy to modify this plugin. If I can't sort it out, I'll ask Max.

Thanks for the tips. I will try this first as it is what I'm after. But
I will problable also look at the SlimScrobber plugin to see if a can
make a small logger plugin.

I found out how to clear the hitlist. Go to server -> Rescan library
and select "Clear library and rescan everything".

This will solve this weekend's challenge, but I doub't it is useful for
anyone else ;)

Thanks for the feedback.

If I can clear the hitlist, I can at least find out what my friends
plays at the party tomorrow. That will solve the problem that started
the discussion.

In a few weeks time I hope that I will have time look at the lastfm
plugin and modify it to me needs (If I am allowed to do that...)

Now, that was my thought as well. But I couldn't find any information
in the docs or faq's. It shouldn't be difficult to put something
together, though...

Thank's for the link to lastfm. From what I see from their website, I
don't think it is what I am looking for.

1. The data I want to collect is for personal use.
2. I am not interested in what lastfm is offerning.
3. I am also suspicious of website who want to collect data for me. Do
they have other motives ?

[slim] Can I setup slimserver to log all files served?

2005-11-25 Thread tomsi42

Hi,

I have had a SB2 for a few weeks now and are really enjoying it. A
question from a friend popped up today.

Is it possible to see which songs that have been played on my SB2
during a given period?

"Why?" may you ask. What do I listen most ? I let my friends loose on
my music collections. What did they choose?
