Re: [slim] 10 years after the Squeezebox Radio...
My new old Boom arrived today. Seller had described as not working and something that was picked up in a boot sale or similar. It has a poor power supply connection but real issue is that the front panel lights come on but not the screen. A bit of digging around in old posts etc showed that this was probably an issue with the WiFi PCI card ... so 15 minutes later after a battle with the car to get it out (was stuck to the circuit board with a pair of foam rubber pads) ... I now have a working Boom (over Ethernet). The screen is clearly (or more accurately not clearly) towards the end of its life but it works. Speakers sound fine. So next step is to see if the wireless cards are still available - as in this old post from bpa https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?95513-Compatible-WLAN-cards-for-SB3-Boom-Reciever-amp-Transporter Paul Webster http://dabdig.blogspot.com Author Radio France (FIP etc) plugin Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

My first Boom is on the way ... but it was flagged as "not working" ... my hope is that it really does. That sticky surface is what I need to do next, but I'm a bit concerned that I might ruin the Boom even more. I have 8 of these :) LMS 7.7, 7.8 and 7.9 - 5xRadio, 3xBoom, 4xDuet, 1xTouch, 1 SB2. The Boom is an awesome little player, with great sound out of the box and scope to tune it to your own taste. And it goes surprisingly loud without distorting. A very clear-sighted design which, as you say, is not matched by any of the current portable speakers. At the time of the Boom's release, everything looked very promising. In contrast I remember being completely underwhelmed by the sound quality from the Radio - a bit muddy out of the box, and no scope to tune the sound. Lovely form factor, but the SQ was quite a surprise after the Boom. An updated Boom with the Jive interface would have been perfect IMO. Since that's not going to happen, I'm also making a bit of a collection of Booms, and have a small stock of foam surrounds to repair the bass drivers as and when necessary, and have experimented quite successfully with eliminating the sticky surfaces by spray painting with matt lacquer rubber paint. I have a friend with a Sonos system, and all I'll say is that the higher cost doesn't guarantee a smoother experience or better sound quality! chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The Boom sounds *much* better than any of these new things, despite all the years. I now have a Boom in my Bedroom, one in a separate location, and a spare one. Great sound. As to Sonos... I guess if I hadn't owned SBs, I'd plonked down the money. But the only Sonos box I'd get is basically like a Squeezebox Receiver, but at twice the price.
