[slim] Active battery powered speakers?

2010-07-06 Thread bhaagensen

Hi all,

looking for cheap speakers as in subj. They also need to be fairly
small/light, as I plan to use them as portable speakers for an iPhone -
i.e. they must be equipped with a suitable analouge input-option.

Any hints appreciated as I don't know of any alternatives.

TIA,

Bjørn

There a lots of options for portable iPhone/iPod speaker systems. What's
your price range? And how does your plan involve Squeezeboxes?

Cheap as can be done while: maintaining a sound-q much better than the
iPhone and preferably also better than that of an average laptop and
being portable enough for traveling locally and perhaps even
non-locally (though not necessarily hiking).

Until iPeng gains playback capability this system is maintained
independently of the Squeezebox'es. I'm relying on the iPhone 3G
capability for network connection while away. When/if iPeng can be used
as a player I'll simply switch over. Shouldn't have any implications as
far as this purchase goes.

Buy a Squeezebox Radio and a battery if you can get your hands on it.
The Radio can be used as an active speaker. There's even a cable
bundled, so you can connect your iPhone to it.

I had considered that - but thought/hoped that it would be possible to
trade the rather advanced features of the Radio for something with
better sound-q and lower price.

Its a good idea though.

A lower price is certainly possible. Better sound quality may also be
possible, but personally I haven't seen (heard) anything better in the
Radio's price/size class.

Remember the Radio has a bi-amped speaker, and a DSP which is probably
quite optimally programmed to fit the acoustics of the physical box
it's in. The sound is not bad at all, for such a small device. The
Radio is not dissimilar to the Boom in this regard. Have a look at the
'Boom's white paper'

Slightly discouraging - but please do come with specific (brand/models)
suggestions if something crosses someones mind.

I was slightly disappointed by the sound of the Boom - I probably
shouldn't have read the whitepaper before hearing it for the 1. time -
expectations where probably too high. Though I would be happy with some
powered speakers with the sound-q of the Boom if they where
significantly cheaper.

Thanks for the 'google'-words. While I've seen many
iPhone/iPod-speakers, I simply wasn't aware that so many of them where
also battery powered. In fact so many, that the problem is finding some
which sound reasonable. I suspect the sound-q to vary greatly among
models/brands.

I hope someone has some specific suggestions which I could check out.
I'll take a tour locally, but its also likely that buying online could
get me a better deal - provided I know what to look for :)

The 'Altec Lansing iMT237 Orbit'
seems to be getting good reviews at the moment, like this one in 'The

And it's cheap (£15).

Looks quite promising. Most reviews seeem very favourable - conidering
price and size. I'll have a gloser look at them - thanks.

Not me. I just hoped it would match or surpass my Tivoli Model Three,
which it did surpass. But I think I understand what you mean
nonetheless. The sound is good but not "perfect" (whatever that is) and
nowhere near Audiophile-Land.

Comparing the Boom and the Radio, I found the Radio less boomy (no pun
intended), and it was of course not so loud, but actually a bit clearer
and brighter.

I don't know which parameters you appreciate in music, but most music
lovers appreciate clarity. Maybe you should go to a shop that sells the
Radio and have a listen. ;)

Not sure how they sound, but Griffin makes some interesting stuff.
Li-Ion speakers - might trade some sound quality for and huge increase
in convenience.

Rocketfish stuff is supposed to be pretty good, too - I've got a set of
transceivers, but am embarrassed to say I've never hooked them up. :-/
:-) You'll need a mains for it, but it's "portable" in a tethered sort
of way.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+2.4GHz+Wireless+Indoor/Outdoor+Speaker+with+Wireless+Sender/Receiver/9426089.p?id=1218103733077&skuId=9426089&st=rocketfish&cp=1&lp=2

And of course, no idea of these are in your neck of the woods...!

Thanks. I'm sure these are much better soundq-wise, than what I ended
up with (see next post).

Re: [slim] Active battery powered speakers?

2010-07-12 Thread bhaagensen

Hi all,

thanks for all the answers. I've decided on one of the suggestions -
the Altec Lansing Orbit.

I'm reasonably satisfied. Its very portable - slightly bigger than what
will fit in a normal-sized pocket. It runs on three AAA-batteries.
Soundwise, its much better than the iPhone's builtin speaker and a bit
better than an average laptop - in terms of quality as well as
loudness. No special apple-dock, but connects via mini-jack.

I did also listen to another similar speaker:

http://www.retrevo.com/s/Cygnett-CY-3-BBR-Speakers-review-manual/id/23495dj082/t/1-2/

Its slightly smaller than the Orbit - it fits in a pocket (kind of).
Uses a builtin non-replacable battery which is charged via a
USB-connector. Sound is similar to the Orbit, but a bit brighter. At
max-volume it sounds a bit better than the Orbit. Perhaps because it
doesn't try to put out quite the same amount of bass as the Orbit -
which on the other hand, at high volumes becomes extremely distorted in
the bass.

Anyway. I'm ready for the road :)
