Read one of the latest posts: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/node/1420?page=2 Next, for fun, my friend wanted to compare the EMU to his Apogee setup for playback just to see what the differences would be. We loaded the same HRX cut onto both out PC's and using two inputs on his preamp and matching levels we could easily toggle between the $200 EMU 0404 and the $3500 Rosetta/Big Ben combo. Well, I promised him I would not go onto any forums and describe what we heard (he's still in disbelief I'm sure) so I'll just leave it at this: EMU 0404 USB owners can also rest easy that they are getting truly state of the are high resolution sound out of this little $200 wonder-box. Sadly, I haven't heard it. -- Labarum Brian Squeezebox 3 Classic and Virgin Cable Box Beresford DAC TC-7510 MK6/4 - Quad 405-2 refurbished by 405man Quart 980s http://www.hifi-wiki.de/index.php/MB_Quart_980_S Labarum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19963 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The E-MU 0404 is getting nice reviews as a stand alone DAC, it's been on my wishlist for a while. Re: [slim] Anther budget DAC
Hi, The components are probably not comparable to a transporter (which I sadly don't own...) I do know that I think it performs admirably. I have it connected via a long USB to my computer - mainly for watching dvd's etc via computer. I was able to lower the volume a considerable amount after upgrading from my previous built in soundcard and still hear (and understand) speech in movies... When I first got the unit I started working and listening to music in the early evening (e.g. the brandenburg concertos in flac). My girlfriend awoke me from my trance at 5 in the morning wondering why I hadn't come to bed. It is a bit big and bulky - and i don't think that the amplifier will drive every headphone. rgds, Christian -- chrol chrol's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15155 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If you want a nice dac, listen to the Music Fidelity V-DAC, for 160 pounds a real bargain, an excellent improvement of my SB3. -- raven22 raven22's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16511 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

EMU 0404 USB http://www.dv247.com/invt/35906/ --- *See http://www.computeraudiophile.com/node/1420 Hi Brian, How were you planning on using this ADC/DAC? You do know that it doesn't have standard HiFi Output jacks don't you? Very easy to hook an SB to it with Toslink or Coax, but the outputs are designed for mixing or 1/8 jacks. It wouldn't be so bad if they offered XLR or RCA outs. It has a nice Class A headphone amp. It appears to have the same DAC as the Transporter which says tons about how poorly its internal circuits are designed because the Company Specs and Reviewed Tested Specs show a big difference in the specs that DAC chip can deliver. The USB is limited to 16/44.1 Nice inexpensive unit to fool around with recording/mixing, but IMO I would not use it in a stereo system. The additional circuits and mixing parts/switches are also probably some of the reasons the specs take such a big hit. These are not needed for HiFi listening. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Read some more, iPhone http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/0404-USB-EN.pdf An unbalanced output is available on the 1/4 jacks. Getting from that to RCA is not rocket science. 16/44 is not the limit if using USB 2 As to poor implementation, well you wouldn't expect components of the standard used in the Transporter, but that costs ten times more. Is it ten times better? Has anyone heard it? E-Mu is not a fly-by-night operation. They have been active in the music/audio engineering world for more than 25 years that I know of. They have a bunch of people there who know what they're doing. Maybe this product is outside of their area of core competencies, who knows, but much of their stuff is very highly thought of and has been for a long time. Admittedly, this is an inexpensive part, but I know a lot of people get suckered in to thinking that quality and selling price always go hand in hand. It is true that most of their experience is on the musician and recording side of the CD, not on the reproduction side. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can only tell you what I know second hand as I don't own one, but our keyboard player does. His unit will only do 16/44.1 reliabily on USB 2.0 with a certified USB 2.0 cable. Sometimes if everything is just right 24/96. But of course most of this doesn't matter for stereo system use with a Squeezebox. But getting back to stereo use, I didn't say it couldn't be hooked up to a stereo. By not providing XLR or RCAs, one has to do it the Mickey Mouse way with adapters or some oddball cables from Radio Shack. Basically what I'm saying is save the $175 and get an audio only Stereo DAC. IMO for my money, I would rather just use a plain SB3/SBR or get a nice audio only DAC to use with either of them. That's all I'm saying. If somebody is just using it with a computer only or with a mixing/recording/midi/computer setup, it has a lot going for it. As for me, I will again say I would rather just use an SB3 then put this device inbetween my SB3/SBR and Pre-Amp/Receiver. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
