Well, it does have the virtue of not attempting to explain all its
functions in the name (and it's not Vuvuzela!), but Phoenix is a very
popular name. There are at least a couple of Phoenix Audio companies
out there already.

Aluminium i hope ;)

Why not astronomical objects , it is tried and tested Sirius ,Spica
,Arcturus and probably many more , Cygnus, Quasar . Find some other cool
object to name the player after ?

Maybe not reuse Cygnus "Cygnus audio the black hole for your money"

Greek letters also tried before Alpha ,Aleph ,Beta , Theta Ohm (Omicron
sign) Sigma and some more why not another one ?

A hint to open source background . there are some suggestions around
that alreay is in the tread ? freestreamer(player) indy(ie)player .

I actually came up with Phoenix, back on the community funded squeezebox
thread, along with Open Music Box, which did make the list.

As has been mentioned before, I recommend you stay away from squeeze or
slim variants. I am sure Logitech owns those trademarks and will take
steps to protect their property. It is not worth the hassle.

Yea making up more irrational reasons for people's irrational consumer
decisions :)

But you are rigth it is really really really hard to come up with names
on stuff .

Where I work it is often [company name] + [vaguelly relevant acronym] +
[number ,usually higher than the predecessor ]

company name sends a message directly , so it helps .

You could also include a hint to the principles of operation or physical
atribute if they are kind of novel or cool "Jet powered" "compact" .

Or hint at the result or design goals , like a really silent vacuum
cleaner that has "silent" in the name .

In that realm I Think names such as Transporter or Touch works really
well , Squeezebox is just as silly as our jokes but we got used to it .

Can't wait for the first postings saying:

'I've just bricked my Brikk'

It's really not appropriate:

To brick it - means to be frightened to do something. And in the
process of bricking it, you may just pass a brick (or a large fecal
deposit)!

It all reminds me of an instant coffee once sold in South Africa - this
was called 'Puke' - believe it or not!

OK, so Accordion was mine (but Harmonium wasn't), but if I don't cheat a

heaven forbid, Vuvuzela!

Question is: will this “community funded” player be sold by an official
company or will it be a DIY kinda thing for everyone? In the later, I
guess Logitech cannot stop us, the community, from calling it
Slimdevices or Squeezebox.

Very little. All you have to do is invest the time and money convincing
the Logitech attorneys of this fact. ;)
Keeping in mind Logitech currently sells a competing product, i.e. UE
Radio.

How about DEAN? makes as much sense as mArTiNi ... or if we're into

Ah yes, it can create a few problems if you choose the wrong name.

I remember a software music player/database with the name Teen Spirit.
The developer decided to change the name to Conium, which can mean "an
extract from hemlock that can be used to treat spasmodic disorders". I
suppose music calms the savage beast. It now has the name Jaangle (good
name, good player).

Mind you, I could do with a sip of conium now.

what not let the developers decide , then it's probably gets as bad as
squeezebox .

Think about it we got used to squeezebox by almost a decade of use of
the product, it is in itself not a particularly good name . So our
developers can probably come up with something eqaully bad that we can
get used to during the years to come .

Linn and Rega also have awful product names .

In that vein why not *Brikk* ,with Linnesque spelling and a hint of bugs
to come... :)

Have fun , if anything emerges , maybewe should poll about it

I had a guy do a house concert at my place, who actually used a
Harmonium. Way cool.

Zela +1

I'll call it VuVu when I see it can display 2 great looking analog VU
meters...

Also I'm back again on the topic of determining some sort of rationale
for the name. If all works as intended, there will be a few objects that
will need a name (players, server, services, ...) and they should all
feel related somehow.

And if Castalla permits, I'll sound pompous one more time: Zela seems to
be the battle won by Julius Cesar after which he declared "Veni, vidi,
vici"...

Zela! +100

(and the cognoscenti can refer to it as the VuVu)

Most of these names just sound arty-farty and pretentious ... it's got
to be zippy, cool, whatever ... not like something that went out with
the Wurlizter! Oh, hang on - how about HurdyGurdy?!?!

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox: Product Name

2013-01-30 Thread cooppw02

There's a lot of good suggestions here, but I think there's a few
principles that ought to be adhered to that will cull about half the
list.

1. It shouldn't encroach on someone else's name/trademark/IP.

 - "BelCanto" is out: as has been mentioned, there is a hifi
company by that name.

 - You'll probably get a nastygram from Logitech if you were to
use the phrases "Squeeze" or "Slim" or the like anywhere in the title.

2. Googling should yield relevent results.

 - Doing a search for "juice box" or "music box" is going to
give you a lot of results for anything but the device.

My own contribution:

HARMONIUM

originally an Accordion in a box. In other words a squeezbox in a box!

Otherwise +1 for "SlimBox", although that is possibly a bit close to
"SlingBox"

I like Erland's "Melodia" - it sounds "nice", musical (close to melody),
is simple and easy to remember.
