Re: [slim] Curious about wireless route
That would depend upon how the repeater is configured in terms of how the internal OS handles devices that are both associated with it. It could just turn the packets around making it two hops. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43323 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It could be 4 hops, Server to Repeater, Repeater to AP, AP to Repeater, Repeater to Player. Which would happen if both server and player are within best coverage of the repeater. In general, a repeater in a wireless network is always a suboptimal solution. It would be better to have two APs in that case, each connected wired to the backbone. Or use a better antenna on the AP. -- Mike Schenk Mike Schenk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14635 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43323 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Depending upon whether the repeater is doing store and forward on the same channel or using two channels will affect latency. Radish is right in this case I was considering that the end devices may have perfect signals but if the link between the AP and repeater is bad then it could be saturated with retries which the end devices don't see. The link test would give some indication of that effect. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43323 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Network usage is measured over time rather than instantaneously. (If you think about it a network is either 100% in use or 0%). If you are using a repeater then, depending upon it's type, you could be having significant retries between the AP and repeater that isn't seen at either end. This would reduce your throughput and hence the network utilisation figures. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43323 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Curious about wireless route
I have the same setup, ss and sb3 both wireless. I have had stuttering at various times. One cause was a neighbor's wireless network operating on the same channel. I still get it occasionally, but I am pretty sure it is not due to the network - I have a repeater and my commection is rarley less that 36Mbps - I believe it occurs when I am ripping cd's, streaming FLACs and working interactively. At this time cpu usage hits >50% and the disk access lights are pretty much permanantly on, but network usage never hits 5% - so while I agree it is not the optimum configuration, I feel it should work. If you can, it is much better to have one leg wired. Not only is the data flowing over two hops, but there is other traffic, acknowledgement, error blocks, etc that also get to make two hops -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's always better to have one side (usually the server) wired to the WAP (wireless access point). That's the way I have things running. [slim] Curious about wireless route
I was wondering, when the squeezebox is streaming from the computer does the datastream from the computer go back to the router and then to SB? I have both my computer and the SB doing wireless. I thought it would be more efficient to go straight from the computer to the SB but does it do that? regards, David -- wireless200 wireless200's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11887 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43323 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
