I updated the project article on our web site and added some updated photos, as well. The biggest change is that the frame now actually works reliably. Although it was a heck of a lot of work to get it to this point. I should update the description of the project on my web site as I had to put a fair amount of further work into the project to get it reliable. Namely, I had to create a second program that I run as a Windows Service that constantly monitors connectivity to the frame. It turns out the Pandigital frame is a little flaky over a wireless connection. My service reboots it when it looses connectivity. I also took the frame apart and embedded an IR emitter in it so IR Blaster can send it commands to get through all the menu clicks that are required to navigate to the cover images. To answer your other questions, I ended up spending 30 bucks for Twonky Media Server. I think I tried every UPnP server for Windows that's out there. Twonky worked the best in my opinion. I'm still on version 6.3.1 of Slimserver and have no plans to upgrade. So I'm not sure what the impact would be using a more recent version. I tried no other frames other than the Pandigital, but I suppose any that can access UPnP servers are candidates. You need to find one though that is constantly monitoring the shared folder for changed files. Some don't. I will update the source files and project description on my web site over the next few days. I would be very surprised if anyone else could get them working out of the box. Like I said at the outset, this project was a kluge, and highly tailored to my specific setup. But the source files might give you some ideas anyway. :-) -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ ~~~ SB3 (wired - 6.3.1) | DELL OptiPlex PC running XP Pro | DENON DRA-395 | PSB Stratus Bronze (2) | Outlaw Audio LFM-2 (1) | DIY Speaker Cables | Dayton Audio Interconnects jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hi Jon. I read your post here and your description on theheals.org with a keen interest in doing the same thing. I have an XP/SP3 server running squeezeserver 7.4. What exactly do I do with the SBstatus folder I downloaded (after unzipping)? I gather that I need to run Windows Media 11 in order to run a UPnP server, but I am looking for slimmer alternatives. Finally, my SB3 sits across the room from us, so I am looking at larger frames. Re: [slim] Custom Squeezebox Visuals
I've been working the kinks out of the "now playing" project, and I after observing some strange behavior on the part of the frame, I believe it may be underpowered with its stock power supply. It comes with a 5V 2A wall wart. >From time to time, the now playing image becomes corrupted on the frame even though it's fine on the server. What made me suspect the power supply was that at one point I switched it out for another 5V 2A wall wart I had on hand, and the wireless adapter would not even operate. I'm guessing that the frame needs a good portion of those 2A itself and that the wireless adapter pushes it close to or over the limit. I'm going to look around for a higher amperage 5V supply and see if it behaves more reliably. So, anyone out there planning on attempting a similar project with the Pandigital PAN7000DW, take heed. -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ ~~~ SB3 (wired - 6.3.1) | DELL OptiPlex PC running XP Pro | DENON DRA-395 | PSB Stratus Bronze (2) | Outlaw Audio LFM-2 (1) | DIY Speaker Cables | Dayton Audio Interconnects jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Custom Squeezebox Visuals
Thanks to Jon, here's a link to buy the frame on Amazon: 'Pandigital PAN7000DW 7-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Black)' (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B001T9N9JU/ref=;tag=petesstuf-20) And this seems to be the wifi dongle: 'Pandigital PANWF01 WiFi Dongle with USB Adaptor' (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B001T9N9PE/ref=;tag=petesstuf-20) All told, about $86 USD. I'm thinking of writing a similar plugin for Linux systems, probably depending on something like 'GNU gmediaserver' (http://www.gnu.org/software/gmediaserver/) to handle the UPNP stuff. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim AllQuiet BlankSaver ContextMenu FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There'll be a lot of people saying "want one of those". Well, there's one here, anyway. I hope Logitech comes knocking. On 17 Oct 2009, at 10:00, toby10 wrote: > > That is very cool! Re: [slim] Custom Squeezebox Visuals
Awesome, thanks for sharing. It's been many months since I looked at picture frames, and none had online manuals describing things like if the polling frequency was configurable. This is quite encouraging, and much more appealing than ponying up $300 to get on the waiting list for an Always Innovating Touch Book. :-) Did you look into using an IR Blaster on the SB headphone port to send the IR commands to the frame? -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim AllQuiet BlankSaver ContextMenu FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
