Wow, for one my SB3s are now stuck in Squeezenetwork limbo. The Booms
and Duet can connect to it, nonce of the SB3s can. Little hickup there.
Guess they need the new firmware, which of course isn't available until
I update Squeezecenter...

All 3 of my SB3s sre stuck with a PIN info that I have no way enter
into the new Squeezecenter, which does not see the SB3s...

If you just use SN, you need the client f/w associated with 7.4 but not
the SBS itself.

If you use both SN and SBS, you will need 7.4 to prevent the firmware
repeatedly reflashing itself; such behavior is strictly forbidden in our
house ;-)

7.4 also refers to the version of SBC firmware, and if you are on SN you
have to update. Previously, we supported multiple older versions of SBC
firmware on SN. Now, only one is supported.

While it's a good idea, there are also 2 other things to consider:

1. Sometimes you don't get much of a choice (example: SqueezeNetwork
users will probably get instructed to upgrade their firmware right away,
and mixed environment users will have to upgrade to 7.4 o avoid firmware
limb between both mods)

2. I often tell myself "this time I am really sticking with the stable
environment", only to get a bit bored and get curious... and upgrade to
the latest and greatest "stable" version (I do not do beta versions
though).

Very sound advice. I've learned to do this the hard way. It's always
good to let the dust settle and wait for the x.x.1 release.

Aside from potential stability issues, I'm concerned about the major
changes to the UI's, especially the controller. Everybody in the house
is used to the way it is now, so unless there is a compelling reason to
update, I'm going to stick with 7.3.3.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more explicit. What I meant to say
was it's not a "must have" unless it really is absolutely a requirement
in your specific case. Reading between the lines of the original wiki
posting (the entire entry, not only your excerpt) it was apparent that
the "requirement" is mostly an issue if you use both SC and SN. Andy's
rewrite of the wiki has now made that clearer.

IMO, this release makes the Controller a mature product. Frankly I had
stopped caring for this device a while ago.
Now it looks and feels -and actually is I think-, much more solid. I
recently yanked the SBR out of the network, so this might help, but over

Reconnect was reliable. Wake from deep sleep is reasonably fast. I

Still doesn't fly in terms of battery life, but since sleep/wake seems

I've been using 7.4 for about a week and it seems to work very well. I
had to sign back up for the services via the controller as the
mysqueezebox page wasn't working properly, but other than that I haven't
had major problems.

Also, in general, I like the changes to the controller operation and
appearance quite a lot compared to the older versions. It's more
intuitive to use and looks much more polished. I don't think it looks
drab or ugly at all.

It had been a while since I played around with an older SB3, but it
looks like the switching between a local server and SN on those players

for switching to SN and when connected to SN there's a menu selection to
switch back to the local server.

What JJZolx was talking about is what happens when a SB is switched

Listening to Internet radios when connected to SC doesn't require to

So now I'm NOT prompted, but with the new software I will HAVE to be
prompted? How is that an improvement? Why do I need a prompt if I'm
connected via squeezecenter to both sq center and sq network? Are you
sure? Please tell me you are not sure about this.

Right now I switch from local computer music to Internet radio without
prompting (it is virtually instant). I don't want some annoying prompt.

I agree, earlier in the beta, the Debian/Ubuntu install was a bit rough,
but its been clean lately.

Two rules:

1) make backups
2) if it aint broke, don't fix it.

No, it doesn't switch automatically. I wouldn't exactly call the
integration seamless, but it's not too obtrusive. If you're connected
to SqueezeNetwork and you select My Music then you're prompted to switch
to one of the available local servers. If you're connected to a local
server and select a service that the local server can't provide then
you're prompted to switch to SN.

It mostly works. I'm not sure all of the connection bugs have quite

If you keep your computer on all the time (as I do) and have your
squeezenetwork info applied in squeezecenter, will it work as it does
now (no switching) -- just seamless operation between Internet and local
music?

Or does it now force a switch, even if you have SC on and you are
logged in via SC to SNetwork? If it does, that seems like it could be
slower and not seamless.

Wow. That's depressing. Well the next week on these forums could be
interesting.

Think the third party Squeeze plugins and applets are important?

If you want to stay at 7.3 make sure you don't use SqueezeNetwork or
you'll get stuck in another one of those obnoxious firmware upgrade
battles.

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread Mnyb

I do like the new interface, especially in use with squeezecenter.
I think the sbc is a little more stable and don't "bounce" that much
under some menu's as it could do in the past, I like the context menu's
for info.

I like the icons a drab list of text items is not soo nice in the long
run.

I like the easy library switching.

I'm yet to be convinced that the seamless squeezeboxserver
mysqueezebox.com switching is the right thing to do even if it is a
popular change.

I'm with MC regarding apps they have it's place but 5/6 of whats
considered apps is not applications and services as such they belong
under internetradio where they have been all years prior to this release
shoutcast is NOT an application period.

What is downright incomprehensible is for example the News ticker
application ?how do you use it, what is suposed to hapen you press
"play"!? on an article, then what ? it is not shown anywhere near you.

Did you already realize, that from tomorrow on, there won't be an easy
way to stay at 7.3.3 ?

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Release_Notes#7.4_Release_Highlights

Right at the beginning 'Upgrade to 7.4 required'.
Also the texts under
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Running_7.3_with_MySqueezebox.com
doesn't sound to promising if one wants to stay at 7.3.3

The next version of iPeng is very neat and (I believe) should be with
you soon.

Thanks all for the helpful reviews.I'll stick with 7.3.3 for a while, as
everything works well now, and we do use the Controller extensively. I'm
hooked on iPeng also, and probably should wait for the next iteration of
that before moving to 7.4?

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread ModelCitizen

I am not at all sure I like what it has done to my controllers. The
controller interface is now quite ugly and ungainly and they don't work
in the same way. The web interface is quicker though.

I think 7.4 is aimed mostly at at the new touch screen devices and
increasing code conformity across the product range. My guess is it has
also been rushed out to support the release of SqueezeRadio.

The controllers seem to have been forgotten about. The clocks are ugly,
the backgrounds dull, the action of the play and center buttons is
confusing and the controllers small screen cluttered with useless icons.
The "My Apps and "App Gallery" take up too much home menu (and seems
like a daft idea anyway, possibly proposed by someone from marketing who
would have preferred to work for Apple), and the alarm does not accept
playlists that use the BBC iPlayer streams.

Personally I'd not upgrade to 7.4 unless you really needed to, were
buying a Squeeze Radio or really like pain. I certainly wouldn't have
done if I'd known what it was going to do to my controllers.

If it has been rushed out for the Radio then it is to be hoped that
Logitec will now concentrate on getting 7.4 to work nicely on the other
devices. Maybe the software will be OK by 7.4.2.

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread epoch1970

Worked very well for me on ubuntu 8.10 (use the instable repository and
"apt-get squeezeboxserver" instead of "squeezecenter").
I had to migrate all plugins and prefs manually, I don't know if the
release version will do that automatically. Fact is, there are now 2
different directories on my machine, and I can fire 7.4 or 7.3.

I did not create a mysqueezebox.com account, I suppose the accounts
will be migrated by Logi, and creating a duplicate may cause unnecessary
trouble. I don't really care for "My Apps" anyway, so I'll wait on
Monday.

The web interface seems a lot faster. You will not recognize your
Controller if you have one.

It works fairly well, I've been running 7.4 for months. Just be ready to
back it out if you really, really need something that doesn't work today.

[slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-26 Thread p-cubed

Can anyone address whether Squeezecenter 7.4.0-28647 is sufficiently
close to the about-to-be-released version 7.4 that I might go ahead and
install, with reasonable prospect of successful use? I could certainly
wait till Monday for the actual release version, but have free time this
weekend to burn.

Thanks!
