Re: [slim] LAME: where to put on OS X 10.10 and LMS 7.9

2015-02-01 Thread Ron Olsen

You can get a command-line version of lame for OS X by installing
Macports: https://www.macports.org/

Once Macports is installed, open Terminal and enter

Code:

sudo port install lame

to install lame.

On my Mac Pro, this installs lame-3.99.5 in /opt/local/bin/lame.

Michael,

My first Helper folder is listed at:
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/Bin/darwin

I untarred a LAME package folder and put it there (also saw some stuff
like FLAC in my folder above), but that didn't work. I realize I'm
doing this wrong :)

I don't know about any specific Lame for iTunes. But as long as you can
run "lame" from the command line, you should be fine.

Check Settings/Information/Helper Applications Folder for a place where

Which LAME should I use? I know there is one for iTunes. And where does
it go?

I did a complete reinstall of LMS on a brand new machine, and I need
LAME for transcoding my library on-the-go to my iPhone, via Peng.

did find this:

looks like moonbase did some things. see this too:

here's the thing...

all the jargon confuses me, i'm not sure what to do, if VBR vs CBR
matters to these apps, etc. i just want an app to scan my files and
tell me which ones need fixed, and then fixes them, so that the scanner
for SBS and other things is quicker.

[slim] LAME header scanner?

2009-06-09 Thread MrSinatra

every once in a while i see a post from andy or someone at slim sayng
that incomplete, corrupt, etc... files can make the SC scanner slower.

i assume the main cause for mp3s is a bad LAME header? (not id3 tags,
but a lame tag)

does anyone know of a utility that scans your files and looks for
problems that would result in the SC scanner being slower?

there is a small app that displays lame headers but its manual. every
so often using it i find a file with no lame header (that it can see
anyway). i would have thought those files would be listed in the SC
scanner log but that doesn't seem to be the case...

i want SC scans to go as fast as they can, so any clarity as to what
slows it down exactly and what fixes there are would be great.

of course, why install it if you don't need it?

i use it to let friends check out a song in my SC on their computer,
via the net. they get 128 kbps.

it would be nice if SC handled that more elegantly, but neat
nonetheless.

You can also have poor bandwidth at home so you need transcoding, many
players on the same wireless AP, or one very far from the AP with
marginal reception.

Or you still have the original slimp3 player, it does not support as
many file formats as the new players.

I use Lame to transcode my flac file to mp3 for streaming from home to
work because my bandwidth can't support streaming flac. Transcoding is
set on a per-player basis, and is by default set to not transocde. If
you're at work and using Softsqueeze but don't have the bandwidth to
stream lossless set the bitrate limiting for that player only and your

If you use the stream.mp3 you will obviously need Lame for that.

Thanks, Radish.

Best I can determine from reading this info (and related links) is that
LAME will convert uncompressed wireless streaming files to MP3 which
implies that I will no longer be hearing lossless files on my 5
SqueezeBoxes, right?

If everything is working fine right now (and it is) why would I want to
move to a lossy (MP3) format? Maybe I'm missing something.

I use iTunes on a Windows system and all of my files are Apple

1. Why do I need LAME?

2. What does it do?

3. I have downloaded the LAME tar.gz file, but what do I need to do to

which homeplugs are you using? - you shouldn't need to bitrate limit

V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1

[slim] lame stops alien bbc

2008-07-07 Thread gandt

I recently had to find out how to use bandwidth limiting on a second
squeezebox connected through homeplug to get a non stuttering music
stream.(See the selective Transcode thread)I have fixed that problem by
installing lame in the server/bin folder and setting the appropriate
limit (320) for my downstairs player. But now alien bbc is not
streaming to that player - it works elsewhere but somehow the bandwidth
limiting (i assume) is confusing the stream send to the downstairs
player. Any ideas?

Hmm, I thought I had gotten Windows binaries there before, but you're
right I don't see any Win32 binaries. It does have links to binary
sites, including at least one of the ones you mentioned:
http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.php (you need to scroll down a
little).

Re the tar-gzip thingy, several zip implementations (like WinZip)
handle tar.gz just fine.

Using the new default skin:

Settings (link in bottom right corner)
Players (second tab along the top)
Audio (second item from the top of the left side list, just one above
the default basic settings)

Look for Bitrate Limiting.

[slim] LAME for Intel Macs

2006-12-09 Thread Eric Seaberg

I just did a search and didn't find much on this. Has anyone found a
version of LAME that runs on an Intel Mac? I'm watching Activity
Monitor on my Intel server and EVERYTHING ELSE is native except for the
LAME encoding, which takes 99% of one of the processors while it's
encoding!

I did find find a version at http://spaghetticode.org/lame/ but it's
meant to be used with Audacity for encoding and doesn't really work
when put in the LAME frameworks folder as I had hoped.

Anyone else have a way around this?

Thanks...

[slim] LAME Question

2006-11-02 Thread Cleve

I'm trying to get AAC files to play on SB3. I read through the FAQ at
Slim's website, and downloaded LAME 3.97. It's sitting in my desktop
in the form of a .TAR file. How can I unpack this? Is there freeware
for handing these .TAR files?

When I do unpack it, it goes into the Slimdevices/bin folder, right?

[slim] Lame problem

2006-01-29 Thread Philip Meyer
This morning my SBG and SB2 were unresponsive - the time on the SB2 was static.
I went to the server machine and I could see that I had a Windows Data
Execution Prevention message for Lame. This must have been blocking the
SlimServer code in such a way that the squeezeboxes didn't report server
connection errors.

I killed this and tried streaming flac->mp3 to my SBG again, which instantly
caused the DEP message again.

Yesterday I changed my windows settings for DEP to "Turn on DEP for all
programs and services except those I select", and only had "windows.exe"
selected as a test to try to resolve another unrelated issue with my system. I
switched this back to the usual "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and
services only" and rebooted.

I still got DEP messages for Lame though. This was strange, as I have been
using Lame with SlimServer for well over a year without problems.

So I thought I'd reinstall Lame. I was previously using version Lame3.96Final.
I went to sourceforge and found there is a newer version (lame3.97b2), so I
installed that one (copied lame.exe and lame_enc.dll to C:\Windows). I noticed
that the file sizes for the new version were substantially smaller.

The problem has now gone away (although I did have a few stutters in playback
that I didn't used to get - but that might not be down to Lame).

What could have happened to Lame to suddenly cause the problem I've been seeing?

What is the best version of Lame to use with SlimServer? I read the following
(from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm):

There is a bug in LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96 Final version that can cause
skipping. We recommend you to download LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96.1 Stable or LAME
MP3 Encoder 3.97 beta

There is also a 3.98 alpha version.

RE: [slim] LAME, where to put?

I find the most logical place to be the

SlimServer\server\Bin\your_OS_here

folder that is already present, and already holds third-party tools.

there are several places. anywhere in the PATH will work. c:\windows,
for one example. Also, same place as slim.exe or slimserver.pl, or in
the Bin subfolder to match your OS.
