Re: [slim] Licenses Agrrement for SqueezeBox-Server

2010-04-02 Thread truehl

I'm quite happy now, there are no ressources from SBS in my images. The
users have to download and install SBS by theirselfs. A script does it
all automatically, the user has only read and agree to the
license-agreement. The advatage is, that users can choose the SBS
version to be installed by theirselfs.

Greetings, Thomas

Quite simple, ship only the firmware .version files and the .bin files
will be automatically downloaded on first start.

This is a legal question and since Logitech is a large company I doubt
anybody would offer any sort of answer without getting it checked by
company lawyers.

thanks for the replies. A pitty no official is reacting.

The question was more about the evaluation of all available options.
I'm too lazy to build a live image or distribution. Users should read
documentation an learn how to use their system ;)

Re: [slim] Licenses Agrrement for SqueezeBox-Server

2010-03-28 Thread erland

If you want to use the standard SBS software, I'd do as Michael
suggests, just download it automatically from Logitech at installation
or first startup.

However, if you want to customize it you have two options:
1. Contact Logitech to get permissions
OR
2. If you are only supporting OSX/Linux, download the standard software
automatically as described above and apply a patch with your
customizations afterwards.

Unfortunately option 2 won't work on Windows if you like to patch the
perl code since it's compiled to a executable which can't easily be
patched.

FWIW: neither FreeNAS nor SlimNAS include the server code. SlimNAS only
provides the infrastructure to easily download/install/run SBS on FreeNAS.

I did include the server code in good ol' SlimCD. But that was probably illegal
(but nobody cared anyway), and a major pain for me to keep up to date. I
clearly wouldn't recommend it.

I can't give you an authorative answer. But I wouldn't do it for the sake of
simplicity anyway. You better provide a simple means to download and install
the latest (semi-) automatically.

If you want an official statement and/or the paper work you need to sign to
please the lawyers, you might want to get in touch with Anandh_Chellamuthu or

There is also the requirement to obtain written permission to
redistribute "logos, graphics, animations, and documentation". I don't
recall anyone who has done this and described the process in the forums.
I imagine it was pretty easy in the pre-Logitech days. No idea how it
is now or to whom, specifically, you should submit such a request.

Re: [slim] Licenses Agrrement for SqueezeBox-Server

2010-03-28 Thread bpa

IIRC most of the distribution have asked the same questions and the main
issue is no firmware in the distribution - all necessary firmware is
downloaded automatically.

I think you also have to distribute the source code so a compiled
version as in the Windows distro is not allowed.

If changes are made to the source code - you will have to follow source
code licensing.

There are other licensing issues about other binaries from 3rd parties
such as faad which need to be examined.

Doesn't SBS automatically download missing firmware?

There are plenty of distributions that include the server, e.g.
FreeNAS, vortexbox, don't know but they might have cared about the
license.

Re: [slim] Licenses Agrrement for SqueezeBox-Server

2010-03-28 Thread fragfutter

*bump*

the license agreement
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.4/tags/7.4.2/server/License.txt
states

Code:

Squeezebox firmare may not be redistributed under any
circumstances. It is (c) Slim Devices, and additonally contains
code which is (c) Ubicom. Ubicom's code is licenced to us only
for direct distribution in binary form. You may use the firmware
only on hardware manufactured by Slim Devices.

I think this is about the files in
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.4/tags/7.4.2/server/Firmware/
(so all "older" SB-Devices).

So the question is, if it is allowed to:

* make a custom SB-Server Package (or system image) including the
Firmware. Downloadable free of charge, maybe integrated in a repository
(apt, yum)

* make a package without the firmware, but automaticly download and
install the firmware from svn.slimdevices on first start

* make a package without the firmware, inform the user about the
license, then automaticly download the firmware from svn.slimdevices.

* automaticly download an official package from slimdevices on first
start

i would welcome an offical statement and a reason why redistribution is
not allowed. I guess the firmware contains/used licensed code (mp3
decoder, fpga compiler, ip stack, ...) that is not allowed for
redistribution, but i can only guess.
