Re: [slim] MS to end Windows 10 support
It's still a long time out. Also MSFT tends to offer backwards compatibility for apps designed for a previous OS version, which gives one even more time to migrate. I am a big Linux enthusiast (mostly Ubuntu), but have always had a Windows PC because in the end it is a good corporation friendly workhorse and I have a tons of productivity apps running on it (although these days I tend to run a few virtual environments on VMware Workstation). That said, I am not sure whether in 2025 that'll still be the case. As far as the LMS environment goes, I guess we'll have to wait and see, but while the boxes run one can always use an old laptop to run Ubuntu 20.04 for like... forever and the current LMS version will run on it for like forever, at least for your own library. Streaming app support may eventually be another matter, that's the only possible weak link as the world keeps moving... but we seem to be doing fine thus far thanks to an awesome community. ...pablo Server: Win10 and LMS 8.1.0 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- KEF Reference 1 Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado RS1/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114719 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Cloud services revenue is helping MS and Office 365 provides a year on year stream as well but Windows Division need the "extended" warranty revenue to support organisation who need Win10 support beyond the support date. IIRC MS have only recently stopped this special support for XP (I remember seeing "crashed" ticket machines on local light-rail service and it looked like XP) > I don't think users would find an iPad a good replacement for a PC. Not single users or small company but many organisation/SME are moving away from PC based applications on desktops/laptops to tablets/iPads (e.g. Excel spreadsheets moving to Salesforce). Also tablets & cloud application maybe more secure against ransomware. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114719 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well I have a Windows 10 laptop provided by work while I'm working from home, and of course a Windows 10 desktop PC in my still unused office. I wouldn't choose to use Windows other than for work. But I think I read somewhere this issue of moving on from Windows 10 may mostly be to do with profitability of their Windows division, perhaps if there's a Windows 11 produced, it induces a round of PC purchases with a tithe of the price going to Microsoft? Also Apple went from OSX to MacOS10 and then MacOS11 now, so maybe they see a precedent. I run LMS on a Raspberry Pi - I've never installed it on a Mac or PC, partly because I see issues periodically with system updates. Prior to the Pi I was running it on a QNAP NAS, but that became problematic. I don't think users would find an iPad a good replacement for a PC.
