[slim] Missing albums

2005-09-09 Thread jarome

I had an album with a typo in the mp3 tag. The artist was
Tchaikovsky, Peter I.
with extra spaces before the I. After a scan I was only able to see an
entry for Tchaikovsky, Peter I., and the album (18 Pieces) was not
listed.

But I was able to find and play the album with a search for "18
Pieces". I edited the mp3 tags to remove the extra spaces and asked
slimserver to reindex the playing selection, but it is still not listed
under artists or albums.

1) How do I find out where Slimserver put it?
2) It sure would be nice if the search returned what Slimserver thought
the album and artist were!
3) It would also be nice if one could browse to an album and ask
slimserver to index just that album. I have 130 GB of mp3 files, and
reindexing it all takes forever.

I am using the 6.2 beta

[slim] Missing Albums

2006-12-08 Thread gusi

I found that a couple of Albums have not made it into the SS database.

I can find them with the browse files option. But searching does not
work. This was the case in SS6.2 and SS6.5 for exactly the same
albums.

I retagged them and rescanned - no cigar. Rescanned the whole database
(numerous times) - still nothing.

I got the toad out to look at the mysql tables and indeed nothing
there, the albums and tracks are missing.

It is all a bit weird. Other albums by the same artist have been
scanned alright. There are no unusual characters in the file names.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

cheers
Gus

[slim] "Missing" albums

2007-06-12 Thread colin_young

I just set up a new SlimServer last night (version 6.5.2) and scanned my
entire collection. I'm seeing some interesting behavior. If I navigate
by Artist to "New Pornographers" I see a single album (Twin Cinema). I
don't see "Electric Version" or "Mass Romantic". If I navigate by Album
I can get to "Mass Romantic" and the artist is correctly listed as "New
Pornographers". There is only 1 entry for that artist in the artist
list (I've checked under T also to make sure that they weren't being
incorrectly sorted with a "The" at the front).

This behavior doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I haven't looked at
the database structure, but I've been assuming it is normalized and as
long as the album is indexed with the artist name I should be able to
go at it from either direction and get the same results. Based on what
I'm seeing I'd have to guess that the database is not normalized and
there is information being duplicated and somehow getting corrupted.

When I had the same music collection indexed on a different computer
under the previous server version (6.5.1 IIRC) all albums appeared
under the artist (actually, one of them had a "The" in front, but they
appeared side-by-side in the artist list).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Colin

What OS? Do the files containt any non-latin characters? Did you check
permissions on the files and the folder containing the file?

Please turn on debugging (Server Settings/Debugging: d_scan, d_files) and
search the log for information about your files.

If these are compilation albums then they may not show up on an Artist
search, as Squeezecenter sees them as "Various artists" or whatever
parameter you have set. Try doing a song search for one of the missing
tracks, does it come up that way?

If so, try switching off "Group Compilation Albums together" setting
and do a full clear and rescan. Does it work now?

Tags are SO important. The best thing you can do is go through your
collection checking out and fixing the tags on everything using mp3tag

you check the tags of every new addition to the collection before you
add it to the library. It could be a mammoth task but worth it.

Re: [slim] "Missing" albums

2007-06-12 Thread aubuti

What format are the files in (flac, mp3, etc.)? Almost all the problems
I've had like this have come down to multiple tag sets (ID3v2, ID3v3,
APE, etc.) in mp3 files. It's easy for different tag sets to be
inconsistent, and then slimserver gets confused. Unfortunately, that
doesn't explain why it started with the upgrade.

Try looking at the tags in a good tagging program like mp3tag to see if
there are multiple types of tags in the problem tracks, and delete the
superfluous ones (if you find any).

I'll check out the tags tonight. The files are FLAC and WMA.

I still don't understand why I get a different view depending on the
path I take to get to the data, but that's probably just me projecting
my database experience and the UI is actually hiding an underlying data
format that is more complex than I'm assuming.

I think it's more that you are expecting more normalization to be done
automatically than is really possible.

Is '\"The Bears\"' (http://www.thebearsmusic.com/) the same band as
'\"Bears\"' (http://www.bearspop.com)? Or is it the same as "The
Bears," the irish punk band that released "Insane/Decisions" as a
single in 1978?

Tags matter a lot for this reason. Variations on artists makes them
different. Ie, the normalization should be done at the tag level, not
by slimserver, which would only guess (and would most likely merge the
three above, even though they are very different bands).

Re: [slim] "Missing" albums

2007-06-12 Thread MelonMonkey

Many problems associated with displaying albums and tracks can be
explained by bad tags. But there are plenty that can't. SlimServer has
a lot of scanner bugs which in my experience causes whole albums not to
show up, more tracks to be listed in some views than others and also
affects the collection/caching of artwork.

At this stage I haven't added anything to my music collection in a
while. But playing with moving SlimServer from one computer to another
and ping-ponging between different nightlies has shown all this to be
very true. I am about to move to a current nightly since the one I'm
running now (by necessity) is a few months old. The few I tried back in
April or May were just giving me too many issues.

I'm using all MP3 files and SlimServer is supposed to be reading their
location from an iTunes XML file. After moving SlimServer to a
different computer with an otherwise identical disk layout to the
previous, simply selecting the iTunes option is not enough. I have to
also tell it where the iTunes XML is *AND* manually specify where the
music files are. It will simply not find the music files if I don't.
The music is coming from same external HD with an identical iTunes
setup with the XML stored on that external drive.

I just did a complete clear of the caches a couple of hours ago and now
the album listing is different than it previously was. The only changes
I've made were to turn on the Sound Check option in iTunes which
updated all the tags and then turned on the volume adjustment in
SlimServer.

Now I'm getting two album entries for "Forever Pop" from Alphaville.
The first one listing tracks 2-13 and the second listing only track 1.
The first has a cover the second doesn't. The relevant track details in
the songs are identical.

I'm also now also missing about 50 songs versus the count displayed in
iTunes. Of course I have no clue which ones aren't appearing.

My expectation is If I have an album 'X' by band 'Y', I should be able
to look up band 'Y' and see album 'X'. Instead, if I look at band 'Y' I
am only seeing album 'Z' and there is only a single entry that looks
anything like 'Y'. It seems that SlimServer has in fact decided I have
album 'Z' by band 'Y' and album 'X' by band 'Y1' but then refuses to
show band 'Y1' on the artist list. Maybe it's because the text of both
is identical, but internally they are actually 2 distinct entities and
the code that retrieves the artist list merges them. In any case, it
seems like something is broken. I'll have to try exploring the database
directly to see if I can figure out what's going on.

In your example I would fully expect to see 2 band entries, where one
of them really should have been split into 2, but I don't expect
SlimServer to be able to do that. When I said normalization, I was
referring to database normalization, not canonicalizing the names of
artists. It didn't occur to me that my statement could be interpreted
that way :)

[slim] Missing Albums after scan

2008-11-02 Thread NoFlyZone

I'm frustrated. I'm not a newbie to this service and it's worked
flawlessly for many years (I think). Maybe it's the latest update or me
playing with my tagging but...

In my "The Beatles" folder I have 9 Beatles's FLAC encoded albums all
in their own little folder. Squeezecenter likes only 3 Beatles albums.
It ignores the rest. I've cleared the library multiple times and still
only likes the 3. I've directed the scan specifically for those albums
and still, they won't show up on my library. I've even cleared the
library and rescanned my backup music drive, a clone, and still no go.
I've looked at the files, there properties, content, permissions (which
I changed to full access), I've played the music on those albums through
Media Monkey, and I've given it a night's rest and a fresh brain. I
would not be surprised if many other albums are missing, unless
Sqeezecenter didn't like the boys much.

So what I'm I missing, besides of course BEATLES ALBUMS?

Skipping over why for a minute, you should DL Mp3tag if you don't
already have it, and point it to your music directory. When it'd done
scanning click on the column Album, and the ones with no album tag will
show up at the top.

If it keeps happening I would look at other music apps you use, e.g.
media monkey, and make sure they're not changing tags.

mp3tag works on FLAC files?

Be sure to set mp3tag to look at each type of tag separately, too.
Sometimes it is a case of the information being stored in one tag
format, but SC gives priority to another tag format. I only use Mp3,
but this has caught me before where SC was giving priority to APE tags,
but the information I wanted it to pick up was in the ID3 tags.

Yeah, very well, despite the unfortunate name.

Good point about the ID3 tags, and as it happens you don't need to
change any settings in Mp3Tag if you're using FLAC files. It will
automatically read all tags, so just look at the Tags column and scroll
through to any that list ID3 rather than just FLAC (FLAC). Select the
files infected with ID3 tags, hit ctrl+x to remove all tags, and ctrl+v
to paste them back in. Mp3 tag will not write ID3 tags to a FLAC file
(unlike some other named music apps), so after they're pasted back in
the Tag column will list FLAC (FLAC) as the tag type, which is their
way of saying Vorbis tags.
