Re: [slim] MoCA

2008-04-18 Thread aubuti

I haven't been following MoCA, and it seems like there still aren't many
products out there. There might be a future in it, but it seems to me
that Homeplug (networking over home electrical lines) has a few big
advantages as a no new wires technology, especially (1) the wires are
in every room, (2) it's here now, and (3) it's pretty cheap. To me, #1
is a tough one to beat because I have exactly two rooms wired with coax
(for tv and internet), compared to every room (and even the backyard)
wired with electrical outlets. Someone whose whole house is already
wired with coax would likely see things differently.

Of course, the big advantage of MoCA would be the throughput capacity.
Verizon is offering FIOS in some areas, but I don't know if they're
into MoCA at all.

Don't put too much stock in my views though. I once thought HomePNA,
which uses phone lines, was going to take off much more than it did
(which was not at all).

Has anyone been following the development of multimedia over coax? If
it works the way that it is intended, this may be the solution to home
networking. The more I fight my wireless network the more I get
interested in MoCA. I know that D-Link is getting ready to roll out
their MoCA media bridge sometime soon but I have not seen or heard any
 news.

Hasn't Verizon been offering this in some of their market? Anyone ou
there familiar with whats been going on in the MoCA arena?

Verizon FiOS is using this to stream their TV programming information.
If you don't use their MoCA capable router, for example, you then can't
use their supplied TV listings through their set-top-box.
