If heat becomes an issue, packing it in is only one potential outcome.
The system is more likely to act just a litle odd without explanation,
or become completly unstable, well before any of the components fail
completely. Good luck with it, though.

Re: [slim] New Home Server - Will it Run SC7?

2008-01-22 Thread markab

I would go for the new VIA SN1EG board

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=550

2 network ports (1 of those gigabit), 4 sata II ports, built in CF slot
(for embedded linux fun:), mini pci and a pci-e slot fan-less as
well.

I currently run freeNas and SC7 on a CN1EG board but I am going to
upgrade as I need to add more storage, 4 sata II ports on a mini ITX
are killer!!

It was partly down to the WAF - I'm afraid. Putting the equipment under
the stairs meant no large boxes and no noise (at all). Secondly I have a
rack system (home build), that also has to accomodate a 16 port switch,
16 port patch panel, and digital home security system all of which is
rack mounted. So it kind of made sense you see.

The area is well vented - and I have allowed for a half U space between
each component. Though I appreciate the worry of heat issues, I don't
think I will have too much cause for concern, there is little intensive
disk activity going on with the current server (a Small Form Factor PC -
Shuttle). Of course I will let you all know when the system packs in
because of heat, so you can gloat!!! :)

2008-01-21 Thread JJZolx

Why the need for a rackmount chassis? I would assume you're not
planning on placing it in rack or cabinet unless you have other
rackmount equipment.

I'd be leery of building a computer in a rackmount chassis with no
fans. Even if the PSU and the CPU can get by, the hard drive may not.
Cram it all into a tiny space and you're asking for heat related
problems. I've seen some rackmount chassis that were fanless, but
they're generally intended for building things like routers and
firewalls with either solid state drives or very little disk activity.

The drive for silence is based on the necessity to place the server
under our stairs - having recently wired the house (CAT6), the old
position in the study doesn't quite fit in with the grand scheme of
things!!

As for surgical nav systems- I know many fellow cutters who feel they
are not friendly places for humans either!! LOL

The hot trick these days is solid state drives. They have no moving
parts and are dead silent. Plus they are much more green.

Sadly, they cost much more green too.

For sure. co-lo sites have critical power, network and physical
security. But they are not friendly places for humans.

Sorry guys, but you are slightly off the mark there...!
The link provided in my OP is one of many places that can supply
*silent* rack mount cases (ie they have an AC-DC converter that is
fanless), the motherboard stated is also fanless. The only noise
generating part will be the hard-drives - and I will mount these in
acoustic frames. They also can idle at around 14 Watts. Neither the jet
nor power hungry beasts we all know exist.

Pat's experience is no doubt drawn from his very apparent expertise
(nice web site BTW Pat!) in the electronics industry - but I fear this
might not include noise critical environment deployment experience!!
In the medical field, we have been taken over as expected by computers,
and my passive/active IR navigation systems run silent - save for the
drives!!

Thanks for all the info peeps!!!

Or a jet at takeoff. Plus they usually draw 10 amps.

Rack mount computers are designed to go into co-location centers, which
are cold, dark and noisey.

Interesting, Dave. Thanks!

Does this lack of speed relate to using the web browser or the SB3
interface itself? I'm not too bothered about the web interface as this
is something I rarely use.

I'm using that exact board with 1 GB RAM to run SC7, and it performs
adequately. I also use it as a NAS with a hardware RAID controller.

While testing early releases of SC7 I left SS6 alone on the VIA and ran
SC7 on a Mac mini with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo. As you would expect it was
much much faster, even accessing the music files on the VIA NAS over the
network.

I've since upgraded the VIA box to SC7 but I do miss the speed of the
mini.

If you want it really quiet, you'll probably need to go for 2.5" HDs too
- I've found the 3.5" ones are generally too noisy in a fanless system.

I think you'll be laughing: it should run fine. You might find that the
initial scanning of your music library will be slower than on on a
higher spec machine, but once that's done I think you'll be good to go.

[slim] New Home Server - Will it Run SC7?

2008-01-21 Thread DrNic

Hi all,
before laying my cash on the line, just wanted to glean the learned
opinon of the Slimdevices Fora!
I am building a new home server - there are some very specific things
it *must* be:
1) Rack mountable
2) Fanless - and I mean completely not even a PSU fan!
3) Running Linux
4) Not a NAS device - I use it for other stuff too (eg home
automation/web server)

So I have been looking around and like the idea of the self build yet
again - those "Hush" PC's can fit the bill, but the cost is
astronomical!
I have found this little Mini-ITX board:
http://www.icp-epia.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=88

it uses this processor: 1.2GHz Fanless VIA C7 nanoBGA2 Processor

I will load it up with the max (1gig) of RAM.
Will SC7 laugh at the spec??
All thoughts welcome!

Thanks,
Nic
