Nightlies aren't for regular use. If they address a problem you
actually have, try one. Otherwise, ignore them.

Me, I'm still running 6.5.2 on my Infant NAS. No problems on 3 wired
and 1 wireless Squeezeboxes (mixed 2s and a 3). Uptime has been
since our last power outage, and they get near daily use from me, my
wife, and kids.

The nightlies are *pre-release* software. Neverending updates of the
pre-release version is a *good* thing -- that's how you get the bugs
out. No one is forcing you to use the nightlies. If you don't want to
be a beta tester -- which is exactly what you are choosing to do when
using the nightly versions -- then use 6.5.4 (or earlier) and stick
with it. Sheesh.

Multi-CD players are admittedly easier. Personally I really enjoy the
benefits of streaming to multiple SBs around the house (whole house
audio on the cheap), and not waiting for the CDP hardware to grind away
every time you change tracks on a playlist that spans many CDs. YMMV.

If you stopped the ranting for once and described the actual problem it
might even get fixed at some point.
But looking at your previous posts I doubt we will ever get some useful
information from you. But prove me wrong if you like!

Hi there, this is my first post but i have been a squeezebox owner for a
number of months now (have a couple). I think the system is great and
the forums invaluable but i have found myself asking this question for
quite a bit:

When will we see something new?
I am really excited to expand my system into other rooms but keep
comvincing myself to hold on a bit longer with rumours surrounding the
Jive remote (when is that supposed to be released?) and
squeezeboombox.
Is there any news out there about how long i will have to wait to see
something come out of the Logitech/slimdevices team?

Also, when is slimserver 7 going to be "officially" released?
Lots of questions!

What 'doesn't plain work' in the current version of Slimserver (6.5.1)?
There's no compulsion to download nightlies, unless you want the
additional features provided (for free).

I am downloading nightlies to facilitate Jive beta testing, but prior
to that, I've been using Slimserver since I bought my first SB1 and I
haven't encountered any need for 'neverending updates and techie
tweaking'. I've tended just to use the latest official release of SS.
My experience is that once set up, it does just plain work. YMMV.

As a beta testeer for the Jive handset, my impression is that it's "all
hands on deck" at Slim Devices. They are working at a furious rate to
get this puppy sorted. But we're talking about a seriously complex
development.

My guess is that perhaps when the Jive development started, they might
have hoped to have it ready by Christmas. But it's now clear that isn't
going to happen. In hindsight they've done the right thing -
pre-announcing and then missing the Xmas deadline would have been
suicide.

BTW, I'll just say that the Jive handset is a wonderful little device.
When it is finally sorted it's going to be worth the wait.

Thanks for the replies. I take your point on product release dates,
probably not that sensible but it does feel like it's been a while
since the merge and i would have expected something by now.

If they were gunning for some kind of Christmas offering it would have
been prudent to hype it up a bit during peoples Christmas shopping
window. That has not materialised as yet so my assumption now is that
if it is quiet at the beginning of Dec it will be quiet till a few
months into next year.

All complete speculation of course

Would love to be proved wrong though.

As Pat mentioned, pre-announcing is usually to stall other company's
sales. It's usually for strategic markets - not something as
fragmented as streaming audio products. Pre-announcing for Slimdevices
would simply slow sales, which doesn't benefit them at all...unless it's
a completely new category of product, perhaps.

I also found the comment on Cisco dropping from favor funny...it was
actually a great earnings announcement and growth projections were
reasonable. I'd think leading internet infrastructure sales is a
decent place to be as HD video is moving toward IP delivery. Perhaps a
time to buy...

Back on topic - I look forward to both SC7 and a better remote solution
as well.

Given Cisco's recent financial announcements, they may fall out of my
"smart company" list.

I'll admit that many large companies pre-announce for strategic and
tactical purposes. Sometimes to spread FUD, sometimes to tell their
loyal customers not to jump to Brand X now, because in six months they
will have something just as good.

I haven't followed Logitech enough to know whether they do or do not.

Intel annoucing faster, better, cooler chips coming RSN is not the same
as normal product vendors pre-announcing. The Osbourne effect is real,
sales are lost when customers wait for the really great next thing
rather than buying what is on the shelf today.

I will not be holding my breath for any pre-announcements from Sean and Dean

It happens every day, and by many very successful companies.
Particularly in the tech and consumer electronics industries. You've
never seen Cisco announce an new line of routers six months before
they're physically available? Never seen speakers or audio components
at consumer electronics shows well before they're available in audio
dealer showrooms? Deadlines often aren't nearly as important as
keeping interest in a company's products.

Slim Devices past reluctance to pre-announce products isn't hard to
understand when they're putting out about one device a year. A small
company can indeed shoot itself in the foot. But I wouldn't be at all
surprised to see that change now that they're strapped with producing
consumer products for a behemoth like Logitech. It's essential that
they have all the mechanisms in place where a company can know that
they will be able to get X, Y or Z out the door by a certain date. I
suspect that they're nowhere near that point yet, but as a new division
in a company that does it routinely, you can be certain it's a goal.

Logitech does not comment on product release dates.

SC7 will be soon. There was talk of releasing it in November but
fortunately the development team seems more interested in getting
things working properly rather than slavishly obeying some prearranged
release date. However some bugs have just started to be pushed to 7.1,
and there are preparations for branching the software. The Jive remote
will be further away, there are LOTS of changes going on with it at the
moment.
