Re: [slim] Playing Specific Track Artist Using a 'Service'

2009-03-04 Thread MikeekiM

I avoided a pay-for service for a long time...

In the end, I ended up subscribing to Rhapsody, which costs
$12.95/month... My rationale is that it's the price of a single CD per
month, and I have access to a huge library in an on-demand use model
(which is what you are looking for)...

Sometimes you have to pay to play... :(

I am still enjoying it... I love finding out what others with my
interests are listening to in last.fm, and then being able to access
those artists on demand in Rhapsody... It's fantastic...

Update/Edit: Based on your original post, it sounds like you are
willing to pay for this service...what changed your mind?

Just looking for something that is free or advert based and has the
same search possibilities as Napster. Napster is like £10 a month that
is more than I spend on CD's a month.
All I mean is that the search tool for Napster in SC has the obvious
Artist, Track or Album search fields which is absolutely perfect, but
the search fields in the free services in SC (Deezer LastFM) make it
pretty tricky to hit a specific track.

It is great having Napster free for 30 days but I am like a third of
the way through my free trial so I need to find an alternative.

Do you guys subscribe to Napster, is it expensive in the states too?

You're likely to be looking for a long time then. I haven't done a full
economic analysis of music services, but it seems fairly evident that
they need the subscription revenue to make a go of it after paying the
licensing fees required for providing specific-tracks-on-demand
service. In most (all?) cases the agreements that free services like
LastFM, Pandora, Deezer's free service, and others have with the music
labels *prohibit* them from playing specific tracks on demand. For
Rhapsody or Napster or the fee-based Deezer service to play specific
tracks on demand, or full albums, they have to pony up more money to
the labels, and the services have to recoup that from somewhere.

Napster in the US is $13/month, less than £10 at the standard GBP/USD
exchange rate, but about in line with comparative costs of a lot of
things on either side of the pond. That's more than you spend on CDs in
a month, but you don't get as wide a selection on that CD budget either.
On the other hand, at least you get to keep the CDs you buy, whereas the
Napster library disappears when you stop subscribing (I'm not talking
about buying Napster downloads here, which costs about the same as
buying the CD).

Personally, I used Rhapsody's 30 day trial and was considering
subscribing, but their delivery via Squeezebox was too unreliable to
warrant buying into it. Now I'm giving Napster a chance to shine.

Sorry it took so ong to get back, I understand what you are saying and
have enjoyed the napster and erm classical, and they are great. However
there is the same problem as usual (not expensive Napster) the search
functionality is severely lacking. It is uncanny how the pay service
has the best and most useful search funtions on SC. Oh well I suppose u
get what u pay for!

I am interested in Spotify ad based music I wonder if SC will
incorporate it? Anyway that is for another thread. Thanks for your
help. Over and Out.

Sure: Rhapsody, and now Napster as well. Availability depends on which

Napster has just been launched on SN, I'm going to have a go at
trialling it this evening - This is good news for UK/European users who
don't have as many options as those in the states, there negative is
that Napster is a paid service.

I believe Spotify gives that option also and is a free service (advert
based), this hasn't made it onto the Squeezebox yet but hopefully it is
in the pipeline

Yeah, it's a bit of a tricky situation. I am in the UK by the way, so
my options are very limited anyway. I am still surprised that it isn't
an option. I read another post today that says SC has a few new
services available. Anyway, thanks for responding, I hope there is
someone out there that may have a few more angles that can be tried.
No offence, but I get the feeling that the majority of people that read
these kinds of posts are generally looking for the solution too, rather
than having a way of approaching the problem. i mean this in the nicest
way though.

[slim] Playing Specific Track Artist Using a 'Service'

2009-02-18 Thread geebea

Hi all

So... it has been discussed in a number of threads that the Lastfm
functionality in Squeezecentre doesn't allow the user to play a
specific track by a specific artist. We can only assume that this is
due to licensing restrictions. Perhaps this will follow in time.
Also, similarly, it doesn't appear to be possible to control your
Squeezebox directly from the Lastfm website for instance. Once again
this must be due to similar restrictions.

My question is, how about if I am willing to pay and subscribe to a
service that allows me to play specific artist and track on demand
through my Squeezebox, does a service like this exist?

I have researched this in depth over the last 6 months or so and so far
I have been unable to identify a reasonable solution.

Funnily enough, when I demonstrate the system to friends, the first
thing they want to do is find their favorite artist and track and I
have to say well... erm... I can play you similar artists but not the
specific song you want to hear. They always say nah! it's alright.

Don't get me wrong the my radio style solution suits me great but you
have to be able to spend time evolving your radio station and mine now
sounds great. When my dad comes around he wants to listen to reggae and
ska artists and they are not really what i listen to.

Obviously there is a work around using the feedback loop approach and
playing my PC soundcard directly through the Squeezebox. This way I
just play tracks from the Lastfm website, but there is a bit of a delay
and it is not really an integrated solution.

Now, I hope I am just missing something and that I am talking rot, feel
free to tell me, but I am pretty sure that there isnt a service out
there that wants my money and provides the full package.

Cheers
