To be fair, its not quite the same thing to hold a massive text list
(I'm guessing?), vs LMS which is loading up album art for each track, so
a few thousand album art pics will swallow the memory.

Why dont you use Random Mix or similar?

There might be good reasons for LMS's apparent inefficiencies, or there
might not be good reasons. It's hard to compare since LMS's feature set
is quite different from that of the empeg. That said, on a reasonably
speedy server you can certainly load far more than 500 items. As aubuti
mentioned, you can bump up the limit to suit your hardware.

Wow, the lowly ARM-CPU-powered empeg car stereo maintained playlists
longer than 30k tracks easily, shuffling, reshuffling, changing track
order, adding tracks, removing tracks, all without skipping a beat.
There seems to be some serious inefficiency and possible
underdevelopment with SB's playlist feature.

So, what happens with the limit if you are doing a shuffle play with a
playlist longer than 500 tracks? Does it always use the first 500
tracks? For example, if I have shuffle mode enabled and play a certain
genre that let's say has 1000 tracks will it always select the first 500
tracks and shuffle them and you will never hear a track in the second
half of 500 tracks?

Yep my own ballpark figure is that the system can tolerate ~2000 files
per Ghz of x86 CPU core .
But beware of the shuffle function with very large playlist it can bog
down the server .
Problems seems exponential to the playlist size .

Also it gets worse if the database is in bad shape , so to periodically
perform full clear and rescans also helps this case .

It is good that it has a limit I once encountered a bug that made the
server try cue up every file in the dB , it stopped at my 4000 track
limit :)

The setting control is under the "Advanced' settings tab in the
"Performance" section. Item "Maximum Playlist Length".

It has been there for quite some time now, probably since 7.6.0. You can
change the limit using the LMS web interface. I think it's under
Settings > Advanced > Performance. It was introduced to avoid the
problems of LMS completely locking up when loading large playlists,
especially on underpowered servers.

[slim] Playlist limit of 500?

2012-08-31 Thread eschurr

Is there a limit or a setting to the number of songs that can be loaded
into a playlist? i have an iTunes playlist with 3,500 songs and when i
try to play it SB only loads the first 500.

i've been doing this for years and don't recall ever hitting this kind
of limit, and i can't find a setting to control it.

??
