[slim] Re: Compilation albums - problem

2007-01-24 Thread jimwillsher

Same problem for me, still not fixed in 6.5.1. I've just filed another
Slim bug (4708). It's probably a duplicate, but this bug has been
present for so long now that duplication is inevitable.

[slim] Re: Compilation albums - problem

2007-01-19 Thread naren

Hello,

I recently upgraded to SlimServer 6.5, and ran into the problem posted
by the original poster - all of my compilation albums show up
fragmented when I browse by albums - i.e. one album per artist. I
browsed around the forums quite a bit and realized that this seems to
be a somewhat controversial issue, but I am still left with no real
idea of how to fix this in my case.

My specifics are as follows:

- All of my music is from the iTunes library, which uses an
Artist/Album/Song directory structure.

- I tried toggling the "Group compilation albums together" flag and
rescanning, but that did not work. Is it supposed to work in this case?
(I seem to recall reading a thread about this working only if the scan
order happened to process the tracks of the album contiguously.)

- I tried upgrading to 6.5.1 (from 6.5.0), but that didn't help
either.

- SlimDevices support claims that unless I put all of the music from an
album into one directory, there is no way I can get them to cluster into
a single album on Browse by Album.

Does this mean that I am out of luck with this issue if I use an iTunes
based music library? (Seems kind of strange that the default directory
structure used by something as ubiquitous as iTunes would map to an
undesirable behavior in SlimServer - especially since older versions of
SS seemed to handle it better.)

I haven't tried any of the fancier solutions involving editing mp3 tags
yet, but I would like to know if there was some way to get this to work
without having to mess around with those each time after I have ripped
a CD into iTunes.

If all else fails, is there a way to easily go to an older version of
SlimServer? My concern here is that my past upgrades have always
resulted in a corresponding firmware upgrade on the Squeezebox, and I
am not sure how going backwards on the server version will affect the
Squeezebox.

Thanks in advance for any help...

- Narendran

[slim] Re: Compilation albums - problem

2007-01-16 Thread Siduhe

What is your music directory structure ? In particular, is the structure
set up something like Artist/Album/Songs, so that for a compilation
album, the songs are in 14 different directories ?

If so, move the songs into a single folder (per album) and do a full
rescan. Does this resolve the problem ?

There's lots of discussion on the boards about whether the way that
Slimserver treats compilations in 6.5 is a good or bad thing (see
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30839&highlight=single+folder+compilation)
as just an example. If you want more background, check some of them
out.

If moving to a single folder alone doesn't fix the problem, or your
files are structure some other way - there are some other possible
fixes.

Look at your tags - is the COMPILATION tag=0 (i.e. not a compilation) ?
If so, either delete or change to COMPILATION=1. You may need to look
at the files in MP3tag or similar.

Force the album name - i.e open up the files in a tagging program of
your choice and save the album name again - even if all entries look
the same.

In both cases, you may need to do a full clear and rescan to pick up
the changes.

Finally, do you use playlists ? If so, does clearing the playlist
entry and rescanning give you the right behaviour ? In which case you
may be experiencing this problem, which is an open bug.

HTH, but let us know if none of this works.

There is lots of info about this on the forum. My compilations broke
first on 6.3 (as did many other peoples). The cure is to add the custom
tag COMPILATION with a value of 1 to all songs in compilations (this
took me only a minute or two to achieve using Foobar2000). Also ensure
that under Server Settings/Behaviour/COMPILATIONS that you have "Group
compilation albums together" selected.
