The nice thing about SoftSqueeze (well, other than being free :) ) is
that it looks exactly like another Squeezebox to your server. You can
do music syncing with other machines. The sync isn't as tight as it is
with the hardware boxes... things will be a second or two off. But it's
still quite useful.

2006-04-18 Thread chris . mason

Foobar2000 definately. Plays FLAC very well, and supports gapless
playback.

Not very elegant UI, but functional.

Otherwise, you could use Winamp, but you'll need to install a plugin to
play FLAC files - available from the winamp web site.

Just want to make sure I understand : how are you using SlimServer's
mp3 streaming ability, I mean which mediaplayer are you using? For
example, are you using Winamp, then open URL, and dropping that
streaming URL in there? That works well for me. SlimServer will
transcode your FLAC files to MP3. Of course that really isn't ideal,
as you lose all that quality sound!

in addition to the suggestions above ... Music IP mixer ,from version
1.6, will also play FLACs itself. Does nice mixing, too, even in the
free version.

Have you tried softsqueeze? It has the benefit of buffering (or not
buffering as the case may be) correctly since it uses the same protocol
as a hardware squeezebox.

Now that I have a great library to feed my SqueezeBox, I'd like to use

My tunes are all stored as FLAC. Can I use SlimServer to stream them to
computers? I tried using the localhost:9000/stream.mp3 interface, but
nothing happens (or I misunderstood the directions), but not
surprising, since I'm using FLAC and not mp3. Tried it substituting
FLAC for mp3, but just got a browser message asking me which program I
wanted to use to open the files.
You _could_ do that, but why? All you have to do is share the folder
containing your music library so that other computers on your home
network can access them.

Which brings me to my next question. If I want to use another program,
not SlimServer, to access the Slim library, what's a good player to use
 that works with FLAC?
Particularly if you want to use a program other than Slim Server, you'd
want to directly access the files. It would only be if you were
particularly fond of the Slim Server web interface that you'd need to
figure out how to stream the music to a PC.

You're right JJZolx, I'm not wed to using the SlimServer interface. I'm
looking for recommendations for a player that will play FLAC. I did
find one called Ashampoo, of all the names, and it's not bad. But WMA
and other obvious ones don't seem to support FLAC.

2006-04-17 Thread aubuti

It would help to know what platform you're on, but assuming it's
Windows, here are a few options:

- SoftSqueeze (Java-based, included in the slimserver package)
- foobar2000
- WinAmp
- squeezeslave, probably partnered with a front-end like Moose

BTW, streaming to http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 does work, but it's
not as flexible as any of the above solutions.
