Since you already have a Pi+PCM2704 setup, you also have SPDIF
available, so you could consider active nearfield speakers with SPDIF
inputs (eg. Behringer MS20, Edirol MA15D, etc)

I have the MS20 and I think they are quite nice for the price.

Going for separates makes it easier to upgrade only the part that
becomes obsolete first...

I don't have a speaker recommendation for you, but if you are thinking
about running Squeezelite on a Pi, be warned that the Pi's USB
implementation is known to have issues that mean it is not compatible
with some USB DACs.

I have Squeezelite running on a Pi feeding a cheap Muse USB/SPDIF
converter (based on the PCM2704 chip) and this does work, but some
people have found that other USB DACs have problems with dropouts. So
tread carefully. In hindsight had I known what I know now I would have
used a different device (eg. Cubox, Wandboard, etc), even though they
are about 3 times the price of a Pi.

[slim] Recommend good quality USB speakers

2013-04-17 Thread Mark Miksis

As a non-audiophile, I've been thinking about how I might use
Squeezelite with a Pi/Wandboard/etc as a tabletop replacement. Can
anyone recommend good quality USB speakers (AC powered) suitable for
this purpose? By good, I mean something similar in size, price and
quality to the Audioengine A2 ($200), or slightly better? Assume that
all content is 44.1/16 or less.

Or is this the wrong way to think about it and should I just plan on
buying good powered speakers and a separate USB DAC in line with my
price/performance point?

Nothing wrong with the Audioengine A2, unless you can afford the A5.

There is no right or wrong way to think about audio. Only what pleases
you (or doesn't).

Best luck!

Oh, I agree. I like them both. My question is whether there is
something similar with an integrated USB DAC.

If you don't find anything suitable, an inexpensive USB DAC that has
gotten a lot of good reviews is the 'Schiit Modi'
for $99.
